What was wrong with the line up for the Southampton game? I thought it was the best line up we could have gone for considering injuries.

Not much wrong with the original team sheet just that in knowledge of our glaring deficiencies in the middle of the park and the high intensity pressing game employed by Southampton, one would have thought we would have tried to pack the midfield a little bit more. Further, the decision to sub Nani wasn't exactly a masterstroke given how the game was panning out.

Our forwards have more or less been stepping on each other's toes for their lack of movement all season and it just wasn't the best of ideas to take off one of the most creative, unpredictable and dynamic ball carriers in the team and leave two strikers on.

An argument can be made in relation to the decision not to give Chicha a go even as a second half sub in place of the two first choice strikers, given his pace, anticipation and positioning against a tiring side playing a high defensive line.

Team selection obviously transcends beyond names on the sheet to tactics and I don't think the manager has found a balance yet.

Or reserve team games. One thing I don't get is how some of the fringe guys haven't featured for our reserves this season, Chicha, Kags or even Fellaini not name but a few.

Too much of a drop in quality. Wouldn't benefit them. Anderson, Fabio & Zaha have appeared in a few though.

I'm excited about the CL match and at the same time kinda stressed to watch Utd struggle. Even if there isn't a win at the end of the match, I sincerely hope to see an improvement when it comes to the play.

Assuming a few players are fit I'd go with:

DDG
Rafael - Evans - Smalling - Fabio
Cleverley - Carrick
Nani - Rooney - Kagawa
RvP

Ideally Januzaj and Chicharito would come on at some point, and possibly Jones/Fellaini to give a little stability if we're protecting a lead.

I just want to see us play a more modern formation and go on the attack, with no huge empty spaces between the midfield and our forwards. Starts/involvement for Kagawa (especially),Hernandez, Fabio, Zaha would be nice as well.

The aim is to give them a physical workout, to let them get a feel of being on a football pitch and subsequently improve their fitness. It may be low quality football but it is better than simply training and warming the bench

I am hoping for Zaha to get a look-in and Kagawa to start, that's all I ask for.

I think if Smalling and Evans started the game together and he brought on Jones to buzz around infront of the back four, that might have had less of an effect, but to tamper with the harmony of the actual back 4 that had played 85 minutes with 5 minutes to go seemed needlessly risky. Southampton had alot of the ball, but up until that point, our defence didn't really look troubled. It was an attempt to fix something which was working fine, in my opinion.

I remember Fergie saying a long time ago that defensive substitutions to the back 5 should be for injury, a level of fatigue that a player just cannot carry on, or if a certain player is having an absolute howler. He may have contradicted that on a few occasions, but I think it makes sense. He didn't pull a defender off, but he did pull Jones out of defence, where he was having a fine game. Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course, but I'd have preferred us to make a sub which would have helped us retain the ball, and not a sub which invited Southampton on and made us sit so deep.

Agree to a certain extent but the goal came fom a corner not open play. Puttin on Smalling was meant to strengthen this area so Moyes for me was correct in doing so, I think the player/players must take the blame for the goal not Moyes.

I'd drop...sorry 'rest' Rooney. Give Kagawa a go behind RVP with Januzaj and maybe Valencia flanking them. Carrick and Fellaini playing off them.

On tapatalk so haven't been through the thread but for anyone who doesn't know the game is due to be broadcasted on Sky 1...I was just about to add sky sports to my package too.

Giggs  WHY

Shock on the cards I reckon. Actually, it wont be a shock if we are overrun and don't get a result tonight.

Disappointed. Why not take this chance to play Kagawa behind the striker, and give Fabio a game.

Giggs in CM is a concern.

Glad Hernandez and Kagawa are given chances and the Jones-Evans partnership continues. Hopefully Valencia does something useful.

So why was Nani brought off on saturday for Giggs, was it actually to keep Giggs match fit for tonight?

Patrice Evra is magnificent.. that is all

Let's smash them good.. We need goals and positive performances..

I am pleased to see Kagawa and Hernandez given a chance tonight, although it might almost almost be better were Shinji to play alongside Carrick with Giggs on the left [assuming the 4-4-2 of late].

Before slaughtering Giggs - our only really good game this season came with Giggs in central midfield.

Thank god Hernandez starts over Welbeck that's all I can say. It's all on Carrick again then.

I'm convinced Giggs is the one picking the line-ups, not Moyes.

Nobody has mentioned Jones and Evans starting tonight.

Someone mention something about Jones and Evans.

Good team. I'm glad Kagawa gets a shot, hopefully he'll make it count.

When our only other options are a Fellaini that looks lost at the minute and Anderson, can you blame Moyes playing Giggs?

Kagawa gets his chance. Hope he takes this opportunity. Hope RVP is in the stand watching his colleagues and not in London.
