Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Do be honest Tottenham's first XI is a lot stronger than they've been given credit for, a draw wouldn't surprise me at all.

Moyes and the players have got the job done in recent games and credit to them. But this is what it's about, if they want to be in for whatever they want to achieve this season, it will come down to games like this. Such a big game.

--------------De Gea-------------
Smalling----Vidic---Evans----Evra-
Januzaj--Carrick--Fletcher--Kagawa
---------Rooney---Welbeck-------

Would be my choice. With Rooney given a free role to influence play wherever he likes.

Carrick-Fletcher lacks a bit of mobility in a midfield two (Fletcher obviously gets about the pitch a little less and Carrick is just returning from injury so seems a bit tentative) but could be negated with Rooney dropping and Kagawa tucking in a bit I suppose. I don't know what to expect really but looking forward to this game though. I reckon there will be a great atmosphere inside OT. As with the last two games over the festive period, I don't care too much about the manner of the performance as long as we get all three points. An ugly win will do just fine! This is the type of game you feel more relaxed when you've got Jones in. Becoming an important player for us that lad so it's unfortunate that he's out. Looks like Spurs are losing a few key players too though and with Sherwood's likely 4-4-2 and more attacking midfielders I reckon it could open the game up nicely for us.

someone said it, but I think under AVB this would have been a tougher game.

Although Sherwood seems to be trying to go down the Harry high attacking route with 2 strikers again.

Winning this one would really show we're back to meaning business. Whereas a loss would undo a lot of the good work, and obviously put Tottenham 3 points ahead after all that work pinning them, and others back.

Going to be a tough game.

Another team who are going to come to Old Trafford and attack us. We need to make an example out of one of these teams. That's been my biggest annoyance this season. We yet to dominate any of the decent teams in the premier league. We need to make Old Trafford a fortress again. If our home form wasn't so shit then we'd be sitting near the top.

Not saying their midfield is anything special but our midfield isn't exactly great now is it?
Paulinho came off injured so hopefully he misses our game. Their best midfielder I'd say.

Spurs supporters were actually celebrating his suspension against us. They don't rate Paulinho at all. I think Sandro is their best and I don't think their other three are anything special.

Add to that the fact that we have played 9 games in December. We really need our injured players returning ready to contribute because we will need to use the full squad in the coming fixtures, particularly the cups. We have Carrick and Fletcher still to build up to full match fitness. RvP, Rooney, Rafael, Jones and Nani, all to return from injury at some point in the next few weeks and Valencia is available from his suspension. I'm hopeful for January. 4 of the 6 games are at OT which negates some travelling but has hardly been a fortress of late. We need to get that back.
No wonder Moyes wants to look at bringing back some of the on loan players.

Pauliinho's out for 4 weeks.

Good news for us. He played well vs Stoke. So how are they likely to line up?

Lloris

Walker
Dawson
Chiriches
Rose

Eriksen
Dembele
Capoue
Lennon

Adebayor
Soldado

Although didn't Dembele get injured vs Southampton and not play vs Stoke? Any idea whether he's out against us too?

I'm sorry, but we should definitely have enough ammunition in the bank to beat these wanabees.

Dembele scored v Stoke did he not? It is good that Paulinho is out though, he's been in good form recently. I agree, we should have enough to beat them but it won't be easy. It should be an entertaining game for the neutrals, Sherwood seems to like an attacking style of play - similar to Harry Redknapp actually who's probably influenced the way he sets his team out.

Absolute brain fart. Of course he did. My bad.

I think the worry for us is if they do go with two up top, coupled with Lennon who has tended to have the best of evra in recent years. If they have two players up front and Lennon does consistently get the better of evra it could cause some real issues.

That said if they go 442 against us then I fancy our midfield to be able to get control, usually they're outnumbered there but Adebayor and soldado aren't really gonna drop off to help, particularly if Rooney drops we could really control the game which could make the difference with our extra day of rest. Hard to say who will start between fletch and clev alongside carrick. I think giggs will be a mistake as we need the midfielders to help the full backs out especially on evras side. Clev would bring more energy but fletch wool likely bring more stability.

I forgot about Sandro yeah I agree with that. But he was brilliant vs Stoke.

We can't keep playing without our 2 best players RVP and Rooney and expect to win. I think it'll be a draw this one.

A lot of pressure on Januzaj if Rooney is out. Goals will have to come from him, Young or Welbeck as none of the others look like scoring.

That's why I'd start him - well, that and the fact he seems to be in decent form. But the main thing is that he is actually good for a goal. Could come in very handy.

Quoting Spurs win record against us is a bit silly when they won their last game here!!

And even sillier in a year where we've lost to 3 teams who hadn't won here for 30-40years!

Both Rooney and RvP being out again is disappointing but I'd rather they weren't brought back prematurely before they've fully regained fitness.

Rooney, RvP, Rafael, Jones and Nani all being injured is annoying. All but Nani would be definite starters. Added to that the fact that Carrick, Fletcher and Kagawa are all a bit rusty/not up to speed from injury/illness. It's quite amazing that we're on a winning streak at this time tbh. I hope we have enough to get past Tottenham.

I feel sorry for premier league players that can't celebrate new years eve. Not that it's anything special to me but it seems to mean a whole lot for many people.

They're a long time in the pub after retirement, so I don't feel sorry for them. I'd take an early night on the 31st December for 100k a week :)

They get to do the celebrating once their career is over and if they have been smart with their money have set themselves up for life.
And to be honest I would rather be an EPL player not celebrating NY and having to play than be me and my shite job.

Players at United are set for life off 1 season, let alone their whole career.

then they have 2months off In the summer, and their work is playing a game we all love!!

Completely different game to playing in say, League 2, where you might "Only" be on 40k a year, which isn't much above what they could earn in normal jobs, and certainly not enough to fund more than a couple of years without work when they retire.

Have a feeling that something big will happen. Whether it's a late winner, a comeback, or a cracking goal. There is always something when United play Spurs and I expect the same today. I'm going for a late winner.

In Nani fit??

-------------- DDG ----------------

--- Rafael - Evans - Vidic - Evra ---

------- Jones --- Carrick --------

Nani ------- Kagawa --------Young

----------- Chicharito -----------

5-0 win

Don't think Rafael and Jones will be playing mate. Or have I missed something?

Sadly it seems you're right.

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur
Old Trafford
Kick-off: 17.30 GMT.
TV: Highlights, BBC ONE Match of the Day.

Manchester United (Possible, 4-2-3-1): De Gea; Smalling, Vidic, Evans, Evra; Carrick, Cleverley; Valencia, Rooney, Young; Welbeck.
Out: Jones (knee), Rafael (groin), Nani (hamstring), Fellaini (wrist).
Tests: Rooney (groin), Van Persie (thigh).

Tottenham Hotspur (Possible, 4-4-2): Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Chiriches, Naughton; Lamela, Capoue, Dembélé, Eriksen; Adebayor, Soldado.
Out: Sandro (calf), Kaboul (thigh), Kane (back), Townsend (hamstring), Vertonghen (ankle).
Tests: Defoe (hamstring), Rose (fatigue).

Referee: Howard Webb. Matches 16, R0 Y47.

Jones, Raf, Nani, Fallaini all certs to be out. RvP very unlikely and I can't see Rooney starting. N As much as we need him, risking the groin being aggravated with the month we have ahead of us just isn't worth it.
