Marouane Fellaini | 2013/14 Performances

He hasn't had the greatest start to his career with us and that was mainly to do with rushing his signing in the summer, him being injured and not really getting that much games due to various other reasons however in the past two games he's shown some glimpses that he can be good for us. Although many will disagree on here I think that he can finish the season strongly and that, if all goes well, he can be an instrumental player for us next season. I certainly think he should play more often based on the past two games and its a great time for him to get really stuck in with the rest of the team. I still think he has a lot to prove to many though but all of that will come with time. A football match is only 90 minutes long and many things can affect your performance but people don't like to recognize that.

The amusing thing will be anytime he commits a foul there will be a bunch of people commenting on it but never mentioning anytime anyone else commits a foul.

I guess my only gripe with that is that I would like to see him be a little more expansive with his passing, ideally you want your center mid to be able to pick out a pass. For now though I think that's fine, he's slowly building up more confidence and hopefully we see that as he's given more game time.

You mean the 50 yard diagonal ball to Valencia who shuffles on it for a few seconds before he plays it back to Rafael who turns it inside to Carrick ... I hope not - we've spent most of the season demonstrating the sterility of that approach. Fellaini's job is to link quickly and effectively with the three attacking mids in front of him - he did that really well.

No I think if you read just past the bit you highlighted you will see he was talking about being able to pick out a pass. I think he meant the ability to thread pin point passes through to team mates rather than long ball passes. As it is Fellaini has shown he is able to use both a long and short passing game.

Because of his height and build I find that the referee and many on here often act as if hes committed a serious crime. Its just a foul, get over it.

Sorry, as Fellaini had clearly demonstrated the ability to thread a pass, I assumed gza was refering to longer passes.

It's unfair but he'll get called for this especially on headers where your elbows naturally come out..probably why Toure doesn't even bother trying for them

He is looking like the fellah i thought we signed summer now - amazing what a lack of pain in your hand and back can do!

He's been pretty impressive his last two games for us, and sporadically earlier in the season. Currently I think he should be our first choice center midfielder along with Carrick. One thing I have noticed, and I'm probably just being picky, but he seems to be deferring to the more creative players quite a bit. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but he does seem very happy to just let Rooney or Mata take over the ball from him if they are near by.

That's his game really, he's not the guy you want playing a major role in starting attacks. Which isn't a criticism, I've defended him extensively on this forum because I think he's excellent at breaking up play and making the right pass to a more creative player. It's an important part of the game that gets lost in all the fawning over attackers, and in Fellaini we've signed a player who can fill that role very capably.

But he's not going to morph into Fabregas and start shouldering a great deal of creative responsibility. He's a better passer than most on here acknowledge, but he's just not that player.

Exactly. And he's helped by the type of formation we played on Saturday. When we play Rooney and two wingers there really aren't to many options for "threading the ball through" to anyone. With Mata playing more narrow (and Kagawa) there were a lot more opportunities to play short to medium passes up the middle - clearly Fellaini's strength. If that's the direction we're going to evolve in (I hope) then Fellaini could turn into a brilliant acquisition.

yup that's true. I'm sure it's on top of Mata's mind (and Kagawa's) 'if I just stay close to Fellaini, I'm going to get a lot of the ball' because from tackles and knockdowns etc, he has a lot of ways to win us back possession.

I think you're missing a huge part of his game that we just haven't seen yet at united for whatever reason, perhap the ball hasn't fallen to him, he's he's great in the box. He had the most headers on target in the league last season and he has a cracking shot too. Some games he'll get in the box more than others, but he is terrifying in there

You're right, but you can see why it's not happening much. With Mata playing more centrally (rather than having an out and out winger) there's no natural cover when Rafael goes forward - which means that Fellaini often has to drift over to cover the wing rather than getting into the box. If Carrick was a little more mobile I don't think it would be so much of a problem but, as it is, it seems to be either Rafael goes forward or Fellaini can get into the box. What we really need is 'and', not 'or'.

I get ya, but actually if you watch the Palace game and to a slightly lesser extent the WBA game, Felli was bombing on a lot. But we certainly won't see than in bigger games against better teams. If he plays vs Pool I imagine he'll be restricted

Wouldn't disagree. Whenever I imagine the 'Pool game I see Sterling torturing Evra - do you think there's any chance we'll switch Rafael to LB and bring in Varela to play RB? No, I suppose not - ah well.

Important Update

Further to the megathreads announcement, this megathread has been renamed and should be confined to discussing Marouane Fellaini's performances this season. For any other discussions about Marouane Fellaini, please bump or create separate threads.

Thanks!

If this lad is the future of our midfield, then I think we should just all packs our bags, give up, and go home now.

Shades of O'Shea so far

The feck? He has been one of our more active players today?

Our system is being completely overwhelmed here, and you blame one player. Typical.

Not blaming him. But he is crap.

Fellaini has had an ok game today, but with Carrick being so mobile, it doesn't really matter. Fellaini isn't that fast, and is unable to cope with Liverpool's midfield. Our whole team lacks the pace and intelligence needed to track and control midfield runners.

What a stupid bump, he's been one of our better players

He is actually pretty damn quick. He has tracked back more than Carrick today. I'm surprised at the people criticizing him today.

Agreed. Getting a ridiculous amount of flack but I'd say only he and De Gea have come out of this debacle with any dignity. At least he gave a shit.

Look at how exposed you've been since he came off. Yes, the Vidic red card has influenced that but feck me.

Was our better player.. need to team him with somebody who is mobile.. He was good today... looks like he really cared..

We were playing with 10 men as soon as Cleverley came on anyway. The man is a non-entity on the pitch. Fellaini made his presence felt and I think he was one of the better players in a team of pure mediocrity.

He was by far the best player for us. Haters gonna hate and all that nonsense.

In their half he wasn't brilliant but he broke up so many of their attacks.

Better? Maybe Rafa, DDG. but fellaini was nowhere decent levels.

 You disagreed and made a stupid little comment when I said Fellaini was one of our better players.. Then you say only Rafa and DDG were better. Good job.

So he was one our better players then.

Yep. Our best player for sure, not that that says much.

Aye, he was good today. Once or twice I was thinking he should move towards the ball as he just seemed to watch things happen so close to him, but overall, I liked his presence in the midfield. I was a bit annoyed he got subbed really, as I thought he was one of the few players who seemed capable of keeping the ball when pressed high.

We have looked so soft in midfield for a number of seasons, as most teams always win those second balls, and just bulldoze through us, but he's been stopping that alot, which is grand. Some of his forward passes whilst under pressure were classy as well.
