McTominay has surgery on groin injury

His post makes it sound like he will be back after the international break so this doesn't really change things in terms of needing to sign a midfielder. Unless we could sign someone in time for the Wolves game.

Yeah, the hysteria in this thread is a bit OTT. Minor keyhole op could have him back playing in a week or two.

It’s Saul or bust. Camavinga doesn’t want to play for us, and we can’t afford Rice.

VDB can probably do a job there too, it might be his time to shine.

There’s also another one from Monaco which the club have also expressed interest

Weeks maybe months of Fred and Matic incoming :(

Surely we have to sign someone.. there are so many options out there. Fred can’t pass consistently, he refuses to use Pogba in a two, refuses to trust Donny to start, Matic can’t run and now McTominay is out for the foreseeable.

Something needs to happen otherwise we’ll get drawn into yet another race for top 4.

I know lots on here dont rate him but he is one of the first names on my team sheets. He started the season really well. Hope he is back soon and can pick up off where he left off.

Even longer, every summer people would demand Fergie signed a midfielder. Was Anderson the last midfielder Fergie bought?

Yep I think so, we were starting a mix of Carrick, Fletcher, Cleverly & Anderson in midfield I think in 11/12 season

New is subjective. We have spent about 120M on Fred, Matic and Donny. That’s an alarmingly sum of money which haven’t really improve that area of the pitch at all

Matic had about 2 good seasons. Fred & Donny are squad players and not good enough for where wanna be as a team.
We've needed a midfielder to enter our first XI for about 10 years.

We've still got options. Pogba back into CM and Sancho left. Cavani/Greenwood central and Greenwood/Amad on the right, with Martial around too. Rashford is back running at least so he hopefully won't be out for that much longer.

We've still got Pogba, DVB & Fred. We don't have to start with Matic.

Ole doesn't trust Pogba in a midfield two for good reason.
Donny doesn't get game time and not sure he works in a two either.
Fred is one of the two, yep.
That leaves Matic.

By the sounds of it he'll only miss the Wolves game. But for the love of God Ole, don't play Matic. I don't think I can bear another 90 minutes of him playing sweeper keeper.

He says he’s going to miss one game. Cool your jets.

Missed the Southampton game with it as well to be fair.

It's more just the absolute needlessness of it for me. If he's been managing it for months and it would only take a couple of weeks to heal from the surgery, why didn't they do it over the summer?

Seems like an Ole problem to me. The clubs made resources available to him already, so I don't think the automatic solution should be us spunking another £50m on a midfielder.

So an injured McTominay played over VDB? :wenger: How is VDB not publicly demanding a transfer out of Utd at this point?

Missing one game isn't the end of the world.

But the level to which we'd currently be exposed if McTominay (or worse, Fred) was injured for a longer period highlights our problems in CM.

Oh I know, but that makes it an us problem too. We desperately need someone else in there imo. The way Ole sees our midfielders is like this:

CM: Fred, McTominay, Matic
CAM: Bruno, Pogba, VDB, Lingard

One injury to Fred or McTominay and we've got Matic for several games in a row, which he cannot do.

He played in that one but explains why he played so badly. Bit of a mystery how he managed to be so immense against Leeds though.

And yeah, it would be better for us if him and Rashford both got their ops straight after the Euros but I guess they’re entitled to take a holiday without having stitches/wound dressings to deal with.

Especially as we all want an upgrade on that and it seems Ole wants one too. Yikes

We won't be buying a new midfielder just to cover the match against Wolves on Sunday.

Why did we try and treat this with “other options” in pre-season, only to give him the surgery after the season started? I’m sure he wouldn’t have missed the Euros for anything, but come on.. at least get this done the moment Scotland were out. I don’t understand this at all.
Because surgery is always a last option. You don’t just jump in there and cut someone open every time they suffer a strain

Maybe Ole will use Lindelof as emergency DCM?.... well its a good a guess as anyone else's on here!

Didn't he come on for the last ten minutes because he wasn't fit enough to start?

Would we be exposed much worse than other clubs? Definitely not City because Pep thinks basically everyone is a CM. What options do Liverpool/Chelsea have if Jorginho/Kante or Henderson/Thiago is injured?

VdB isn’t a terrible fourth choice option tbf. And it’s not as though Pogba shouldn’t be able to have a crack at the role he won the WC playing!

  . Why didn’t we have this Amazon documentary I don’t know.

Our midfield is a glaring weakness even at full strength

Pogba back and James/ Martial on the left side. Unless we bring in another midfielder.

This is really bad timing for the club. We aren’t blessed with choices in the CM, Pogba will have to drop back in or we have to start playing Van De Beek. This also will put more pressure on the club to sign another midfielder.
Get better soon Scott!

Fred, Pogba, Matic, VDB.

Fred must not get injured.

Probably groined a goalpost in tribute to his hero, Phil Babb.

We should sell him and sign a midfielder that Ole actually wants. Whether that Neves/Bissouma or someone else.

Those comments from VdB’s agent look positively sinister now. Looks like another Tonya Harding situation.

Good to know a McT fit for the operating table is better than Donny.

In other news, sign a fecking midfielder.

He went too hard against Leeds. Shame because it was one of his best games.

McTominay needed surgery and Ole still picked him over VDB. That's brutal for VDB. If he's only missing one game, it's not that bad, but it shows how short we are in midfield with only one injury.
