McTominay has surgery on groin injury

The same pairing that won something like 8/10 games after lockdown with us playing our best football since Fergie and winning by 3 clear goals in the PL 4 times on the bounce - only time it’s ever been done. Disaster.
And Matic is a full year older and is finished.

Like the options are there for cover but I think no one has faith in Ole to actually change the system which is worrying. He needs to go 4-3-3

CM Pogba CM VDB CM Bruno RW Greenwood LW Sancho CF Cavani. I just don't think Ole is good enough tactically whatsoever.

He actually worries me how inept he is.

Tuchel, Pep, Klopp would adapt.

You know exactly what I mean. Pogba will get shoved back there but considering he’s just posted five assists in two games from further up the pitch then I’m not blown away by the prospect.

Van de Beek remains a mystery, and must have played there for the club fewer than five times.

Needs must and the idea that it’s an inconceivable burden to temporarily play Pogba in the position he won the WC playing, or VdB in a position he excelled in for Ajax is melodramatic as hell.

That “fact” has nothing to with the topic of this thread, which is McT missing a game or two with a minor injury.

Sounds like he'll be missing more than that though.

And of course it has relevance when an area that already required additions has just lost one of the starters

Absolutely farcical planning.

Fred and Matic are now our only first team central midfielders. And some of you lot want a tilt at the title. Jesus (and yes, Ole is responsible for this shit show, too).
What’s happened to Pogba then?

Wish him a fast recovery. He's the best we got out of our midfield options (not counting Pogba and Bruno in that). I would still like us to strengthen in this position. Likely not going to happen now though.

If McT or Fred or out we have Matic, Pogba and VdB who are all capable of playing as a CM. How many other teams have five CMs in their first team squad? Not a rhetorical question. Genuinely curious if you can name any?

Chelsea for one. They have Kovacic, Jorginho, Kante, Mount and Barkley. On top of that they're desperately pushing for Saul...

I like Matic, he's the only pure DM we have but his legs are gone. He isn't reliable anymore. Beek, let's not go there, that's as ridiculous as me mentioning Barkley. Pogba is obviously a midfielder but we're massively unbalanced whenever he starts in CM because there isn't a DM capable of doing the dirty work behind him.

Sign a proper DM, pair him with Pogba and then McFred can return to being rotation players like they were post the first lockdown. All of a sudden we'd have a top class midfield.

Simple fact is our Midfield 2 is poor and needs additions.
Why does Ole persist with this formation is the real question?

Scott and Fred not good enough so he has to play two defensive midfielders and our midfield is then overun by good teams.

A single player should be able to cover there positions.

It isn’t an inconceivable burden but it’s shite planning. We’re now moving the most productive attacking midfielder in the league (so far) further back into a position in which he doesn’t play as well, all because the club has neglected to buy players in an area of pitch that is already our weakest by some significant margin.

Van de Beek hasn’t played regular football in that midfield role for over two years.

This is a real concern. Matic is very much past it, Fred is not a top 6 midfielder to say the least and VDB doesn’t exist (ad far as Ole is concerned). I don’t think we’re going to buy so the next few months will be a struggle playing without a midfield.

For everyone losing their shit about Pogba playing deeper that’s the only way we can get Mason, Sancho and Cavani on the pitch together anyway. Which is something we all want to see, surely? And that’s not even considering Rashford.

We might finally get to see Donny having the run of games he needs to establish himself, so this could be a blessing in disguise. I'm finding the idea that McTom being unavailable for a while is a massive blow to our season a bit silly, to be honest. I like him a lot but he's not irreplaceable.

Did you watch the game at Southampton?
Yes. He’s put in equally shit performances before regardless of his age. He also doesn’t suit Fred and never has. You’re having a meltdown because our only options for the next game are 40m Matic, 40m VDB, 50m Fred or 89m World Cup winning midfielder Paul Pogba. We’re done for. Pack the club up and let’s all go home.

What’s happened to Pogba then?

I’ve outlined my thoughts on this further back. We’re moving our best player so far this season from the position in which he is our best player so far this season because we have neglected to buy proper midfielders. All because a player now needs surgery on an injury that he himself claims to have had for months.

I’ll come back to this in a few weeks when it’s clear that he’s finished and say I told you so. You’re lying to yourself if you think otherwise.

What do you propose doing with Pogba when Mason, Sancho, Cavani and Rashford are all available for selection?

Pretty obvious he’ll be playing CM in the near future.

I don’t even think he played regular football there for Ajax, to be honest. De Jong + Schone were the ‘pivot’, he was sort of like a no.10.

I’d play the most in form of the three from the start and bring the other two on to either win or (hopefully) kill a game. Let them fight it out.

This is why Pogba's leaving.

You develop a way of playing that's highly dependent on having mobile, physical midfielders but only have one such a player in your squad. Despite being presented with ample opportunities to buy in other players who can support that effort.

Then that player gets injured and its all square pegs, round holes again.

If you are Pogba why would you believe the club is really moving forward? Why would you sign a new deal?

All this BS about we have to sell to buy. Did someone put a gun to the head of our board and say renew Bailly, renew Mata, renew Matic, renew your 15 goalies. If the wage bill has been exhausted thats the fault of the club. Nobody else. Waiting on fantasy fees for players we don't want, and nobody else really wants, who we pay hundreds of thousands of pounds a week to.

We should have cleared the wage bill in anticipation of bringing in at least one, probably two midfielders. Utterly pathetic. Now we're all clasping our hands praying for McTominay to race back from surgery. Pathetic.

Is it? He’s been playing regular football out on the left since the turn of the year. He’s been way more productive there, too. So much so he gets pelters for coming back into the middle and losing possession in his own half (well, never).

Simple solution is obviously play our 90m central midfielder in...centre midfield

It's amazing how so many of us were forgetting Pogba is actually a specialist there.

Pogba and Fred, once Varane is installed behind them should be ok.

It allows us to get Sancho and Greenwood in together.

What do you propose doing with Pogba when Mason, Sancho, Cavani and Rashford are all available for selection?

Those that don't perform end up on the bench. That's what competition for places does.

What do City do when Grealish, Gundogan, Mahrez, Sterling, Ferran, Bernardo, KDB, Foden, Jesus are all available for selection?
What do Chelsea do when Lukaku, Werner, Mount, Pulisic, Havertz, Ziyetch, Odoi all are available?

I swear some of you think a football season consists of one match. Can't have more than 4 defenders, 2 mids and 4 attackers in the squad because what would happen if they're all available for selection at the same time.

A Pogba-Fred midfield duo is horrible defensively. It’s also sloppy as feck on the ball.

Midfielder incoming. I refuse to believe the club is that daft

They knew he should have done this after the Euros yet here we are. It's crazy how amateur decisions are made regularly at a multi-billion dollar organization.

You'd swear this is April Fool's until you check the date.

There has to be plans afoot to sign a midfielder or promote from within... :wenger:
