MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

shocking stuff... Fergie's interview was unbelievable... never imagined he would be so candid about something like this. Contract negotiations happen behind closed doors. Can't fathom why he felt the need to come out and explain this in such detail.

As for Rooney, he can feck off, obviously. We will move on and in fact this season our best football has come without him in the team. We are where we are due to complacency and defensive lapses rather than missing Wayne Rooney.

The only question is whey we didn't feck him off in the summer if he was so adamant about leaving.

That's not necessarily true though. You have to look at the specific cases, of which I assume you're thinking of Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo.

Ronaldo moved to the only club that has more pulling power than United. And considering he was a foreigner in England, and Madrid was his 'childhood' club, there's no need to use this as an example of United not being able to hold onto players.

Tevez wanted to stay but needed more opportunities to play first team football (or so he says). United couldn't guarantee him that, but that's what you have to expect when you're playing for one of the few biggest clubs in the world - you have to earn your place. Then there's team dynamics, game-plans, etc. that need to be considered when selecting the side. Tevez' move to City wasn't really an indication that United can't hold onto their best players.

Rooney... Well this is all yet to be seen for now.

good post mate. everyone trying to tie this the Glazers is just not accurate.

This is a sad sad day. We will surely find a way to bounce back from not having Rooney around, but still is a huge blow.

He was a player who of the new lot epitomised United's character the most. Desire, skill, drive. And now, this.

With Fergie coming out in the open with all the details, there doesnt seem to be any turning back. Feck.

Well Rooney could crawl back kissing SAFs feet or something like that, and he'd probably be forgiven

It's interesting that SAF said the door is still open for him.

He has to doesn't he? No club in the world can pretend like they don't need or want one of the top 10 players in the world.

But he's not signing a new contract, and personally I don't want him to play for us again.

exactly

its a shame so many united fans are convinced that we're no longer able to keep our players despite there being practically no evidence to support that

well exactly.

Rooney was the best player we have had for some time and it will hurt to lose him. But I won't be wishing him ill. He almost carried us single handedly last season. Some great memories too.

Still think we will do well this season. This may well galvanise the team. SAF will see to that.

The part that hurts me is after all SAF has done for this club and the player, he does not deserve this.

No I will have hatred alright. He has everything at United. Everything.

We'll do fine. We have Fergie. 10 times the man Rooney is and 100 times as good as him at what he does.

Its a little bit early to start the comparisons really. I mean Rooney could in theory end up deciding he wants to stay and sign a new deal. Or he could insist on signing for a foreign club.

However, he's started this all very very badly. The timing of him saying he wants to leave just as the season is starting, and the lack of any good reason why he might want to leave, mean that he's got some work to do if he's going to leave in a better way then Tevez did. But its not beyond him.

His timing is bad, for both him and the club. I wouldn't put myself out on the forecourt when my form was so poor and i was injury stricken, would you?

This saddens me, not the fact that Rooney is leaving, but the fact that I've never seen Fergie so disappointed and hurt.

His body language sin;t like any other interview I've ever seen.

Why the feck would we want to play someone who is adamant about leaving the club?

Shitty will defintiely be making an offer and soon.

You can bet your boots they started tapping Rooney up in the Summer. He would never have told the club that he wanted away without a big prize awaiting him.

Dark forces come with rich foreigners! :)

I am glad to see the back of him and the rumours. On your way fatty......

Dude

Don't worry about that. I am more concerned with SAF - I think he was betrayed like never before.

SAF is a warhorse but to paraphrase Julius Caesar

"Et Tu Wayne?"

Greatest betrayal of a manager.

He's possibly the greatest manager the game has seen. He'll deal with it easily.

My guess is that losing Ronaldo was a much bigger deal for Fergie. The way he spoke about Ronaldo was very different, almost sometimes in awe.

I'm more shocked that Fergie has come out in public and said these things. Surely he can't be played now, the reaction he will get from his own fans will be horrific!

SAF's no mug either.

He knows there may be a time when we need Rooney to play.

We only learned one new bit of information today but its interesting all the same. That's the fact Rooney first turned down a contract on aug 14th.

This means rooney can't use a lack of investment in the squad as an excuse (transfer window was still open) and we can be reassured that negotiations were well underway before he entered the last two years of his contract.

Even if it was that it would have been a disgrace. He was one of the very few players I thought we never needed to worry about when it comes to leaving.

Right now we probably only have about 6 players left who hand on heart unless they were forced out will retire at Utd. Giggs, Scholes, Neville, VDS (all at the end of their careers) and O'Shea and Fletcher.

This whole situation really has left me disillusioned with Football.

Sigh.

How can things turn around so much in just 6 bloody months.

I never realized what the wr stood for in your username!

Nothings turned around. It's just that we know now what didn't back then.

Very similar this to becks. For those who were here then, read up that thread. Same disbelief, same doubts for the club, SAF has lost it, United are in decline, etc.

Well, two CL finals later, we still keep on going. Move over Wayne, Chicharito is ready to score goals.

Becks didnt want to leave - Rooney does.

FFS. At least wait until you know the reason behind all this.

He's running away from his private life, which is fairly obvious. He knew the story was going to come out, which is why he tried to get an injunction, and started planning a way to get himself out of it. By doing this, the focus is on something other than his philandering ways. He'll claim it was for ambition or whatever, but he's running away from a situation he created by being a stupid cnut.

But he's not signing a new contract, and personally I don't want him to play for us again.

To be fair, if he did have a change of heart and sign, then I've got no problem with forgiving him. If he's been mislead by some twat of an agent, and realises his error, then fair enough... he's not the first player to hold the club to ransome, and we could put it behind us and forget all about it with a little bit of time.

But I can't see any of that happening, given today's events... I don't remember anybody going this "public" so far in advance of a transfer window before. In which case I'll be happy never to see him in our shirt again.

No I will have hatred alright. He has everything at United. Everything.

We'll do fine. We have Fergie. 10 times the man Rooney is and 100 times as good as him at what he does.

I felt similarly about Ronaldo.

I have long ago accepted players like Giggs and Scholes are in the past. Money is the loyalty now. So why hate him.

As you say SAF will bring us to more glory.

My one fear for us as a club is when the great man does say goodbye one day. Maurinho? How do you replace the greatest manager of all time eh?

shocking stuff... Fergie's interview was unbelievable... never imagined he would be so candid about something like this. Contract negotiations happen behind closed doors. Can't fathom why he felt the need to come out and explain this in such detail.

I would guess the stories about Rooney's agent calling journos etc were true

And it further goes to show that you don't 'know' player at all. Unless they're the likes of Giggs and Scholes who have proven their class, dignity and loyalty over decades, it's very hard to. I always looked at Rooney as that slightly simple young kid who is born to be a football pitch and doesn't care for much else. Clearly I've been proven wrong.

it doesn't work that way now doesn't it. It's either the money or partying(Adriano, Ronaldinho) that take the top priority. It's not about the sport or the clubs or the supporters. It's the name, wages, fame, drinks and the likes.

Can't really prevent that and to look at Fergie he truly was disappointed today. I guess in Wayne he saw someone who can be like Giggs or Scholes, that he can be a legend or just to be a model professional at least on the pitch. However the world doesn't spin in that direction nowadays. I guess that's what made him sound as a broken man. You'd expect this mutiny(can't call it otherwise) from someone like Tevez or Ronaldo, players with supposed HUGE ego who understand nothing of what United should be and what the club is all about, but from Rooney who is supposed to be the team player, leader and the one who is supposed to honor his word - "lifetime contract" was a huge blow.

Words, premises, devotion and respect come for nothing nowadays. He expected a respect and support from " his people" but he is not capable to give nothing back. After today he's a nomad really. Can't see United supporters backing him up anymore and they are the only ones not crucifying him after his mischievous, poor form and all.

Rooney was never a legend, nor he would ever be. He could have been, like Ronaldo, but he chose another path. Can't say I wish him good, nor bad - that's the choice he has made. That choice leaves a lot of supporters bitter and disappointed, including me. I'm not bothered where he goes at all. Will it be shitty or Chavs or Pool. It's not like he honours the clubs traditions. It's not like he would ever be a part of United history, the part that shows what this club is all about. He'll be just another player that got here, made a name, won titles and fecked off.

There's nothing i can say that hasn't been said before but this is just so hard to belive i honestly thought he would be at United for the rest of his career, get rid in January i say and try and bring in a world class replacement, that or get Fergie to finally admit we are broke.

Why waste space on a player who doesn't want to play for us? Would rather give time to a player who wants to wear the shirt.

We saw how pathetic he was on the weekend.

i dont want see this cnut play for us again...

I hope he never plays for us again, except for the last 10 minutes of a game we are winning 5-0 at Old Trafford so the fans can really show what they think of him (not booing - proper abuse)
