MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

feck him.. if he stays, i'll never be able to support this team in the same way again.

I'll always support my team, but it will be odd to see a player who thinks his team mates are below par.

That said I don't think he will be here in with us anymore.

If winning trophies really is the reason he wants to leave, then to be honest I can see why.

Once VDS, Scholes, Giggs and Neville have all hung up their boots we do not have the quality to take on the best teams in Europe or probably the Premiership.

We have spent money on young players who might possibly make the grade, rather than quality players.

If you leave out Giggs and Scholes from our mid-field it does look pretty average.

As things stand at the moment, I can't see us winning anything this season. :(

Dont know whether this article has been circulated. But even the City fans are not too happy with him:

CITY FANS: WE DONT WANT HIM

Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United but fans of big-spending rivals Manchester City are unlikely to lay down the welcome mat for the England striker at Eastlands.

City, thanks to their mega-rich owners, are one of few clubs in the world with deep enough resources to buy Rooney, or afford his wages.

City coach Roberto Mancini said he has had no contact with United about bringing their unsettled forward across to the blue half of the city and many fans are hoping it stays that way.

"We don't need to spend anymore, we need this team to settle," Jacqui Grant, who was shopping in central Manchester wearing a City sweatshirt, told Reuters on Wednesday.

The world's richest club have spent more than 300 million pounds ($471.7 million) building a team since being taken over two years ago, bringing in the likes of forwards Emmanuel Adebayor, David Silva and ex-United striker Carlos Tevez.

"Rooney shouldn't come to City, we got away with it with Tevez, but this could cause a lot of trouble, a lot of unrest in the city of Manchester," added Grant.

"I don't like him as a guy, he can't play at the moment, he had a bad World Cup, he's not going to help us."

Her 16-year-old daughter Beth is a United fan and even she did not want Rooney to stay at Old Trafford after a poor start to the season.

"He's rubbish, nobody wants him. He should play in the reserves after saying he wants to leave. I won't be cheering him if he wears the shirt for the first team," she said.

"What's the point in buying an out of form player with personal problems for what will probably end up being a record transfer fee?" said office worker Paul Davis. "We don't want him and we don't need him."

After a miserable World Cup as well as allegations about his private life splashed across the newspapers week after week, Rooney's stock has fallen although his class is not in question after a 34-goal season last year.

"He's not as good a player as last season. He thought he was bigger than the club and that doesn't work here," said Pedro, a United fan who declined to give his second name as he walked past Old Trafford heading for a few pre-match drinks before Wednesday's Champions League match against Bursaspor.

"He has played himself into a transfer that he wanted -- he's been putting in some dreadful performances this year.

"Alex Ferguson is right not to let him get away with it. It all goes a way to explaining our start to the season."

Amid all the talk of Rooney heading for the Old Trafford exit, there were a few fans who think it will not come to that.

"I don't think he will leave," said Samuele Omiecceoli, who had flown from his home in Italy to watch Wednesday's game.

"He will stay at United because many times there have been offers from big clubs like Real Madrid and he hasn't gone."

I only need to quote SAF in reply to that as he sums it up perfectly:

He actually said they weren’t good enough and he wasn’t prepared to wait until they were. That’s what happens, that’s the problem with potential – people don’t identify potential, they’re very poor at it. I’ve identified it all my life within young people – I know potential, I know how it can be developed and I know how to have faith in it - young people surprise you when you give them an opportunity. And that’s what this club is about. So when you see Manchester United at the moment with all these young players, you can’t see Manchester United three years ahead because you’re not thinking about that.

For arguments sake, what if he does a U-turn?

He'll go back to being the best player in the world, world class, etc..

Really, the people in here have been shocking. Saw one reply saying "I never felt comfortable cheering a scouser anyway." sure, you didn't..

According to Marca, Mourinho would like him.

They claim his agent has told RM he's looking for 14m net / year, (1m more than Ronaldo) and a better image rights deal.

So, no delusions of grandeur there.

I really wonder how in the world their going to "put this to bed within 24 hours".

This is starting to make Ronaldo look like an angel.

According to the journos on twitter (telegraph, guardian) Fergie probably will announce that Rooney won't play for United anymore

This is the best option for all parties at this juncture I reckon. If we can sell him to Real we can perhaps soften the lesser cash amount with a player.

I don't think he's going to go to Real. Coleen's little sister Rosie is very ill (she was recently even in coma) and she's a family person anyway, she's almost every day visiting her parents in Liverpool.

As wise Keano ones said, those who do not want to play for me, I will drive them away. Where to Rooney?

True words from Keane.

I wouldn't mind him going to City and I don't fear him. We play only two Premier League games against City during a Premier League season and it's not like Wayne's always in top form. I'm quite sure life in Manchester won't become easy for him if he moves to the Citizens. :D

No he won't. Even if he did a u-turn and came back to us on bended knee, the damage he's done won't be repaired. He's insulted Fergie, his mates, the club, and the supporters. I don't give a feck if he crawled a mile over broken bottles, I don't want to see him in a United shirt again.

As much as opinions usually are divided on Redcafe, I think most people on here would agree with your sentiments. Since the whole Rooney saga has started I've hardly read posts from people who would like to forgive Rooney.

No he won't. A player who has insulted the club and what it stands for will never be supported by the fans again. Even if he stays and signs a new contract, all his achievements will not be cheered for. Sure, we'll celebrate if he scores and we win, but we'll prefer if someone who wants to be here scores.

If any other man utd or england players come on twitter I will let u guys know so STOP asking that perlease, its clogging up my s*$¤!! Am I not enough for some of u...my ego has been destroyed!!

We should take closely care of Rio, so that his destroyed ego doesn't cause him pulling a Rooney. :annoyed:

Just a joke.

Real Madrid are being put off a move for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney due to his "exorbitant" wage demands, according to Spanish reports.

The Marca newspaper says Rooney is demanding €14 million per season, a million more than is earned by his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who is Real Madrid 's highest paid player.

And Rooney is also unwilling to give the club even half of his image rights, which complicates the deal further, according to the paper.

The Marca said Real president Florentino Perez and coach Jose Mourinho are keen on landing the England striker, but the club won’t cede to his demands.

If that's the case, he's going to City. After all, he's more likely to win tropheys with City than with Real. Money aren't that important.

Getting beyond the shock of it all and the hurt everyone is no doubt feeling, are Wayne concerns justified?

Dont get me wrong, if he loved the club he should be making the efforts to keep winning trophies and not be blaming everyone around him BUT...

Lets look at it, we either cant or wont attract big players anymore, the squad is weaker than its been in awhile and really does look like it needs serious investment to stay competitive I cant help but feel like he has something of a point?

is that 14m after taxes ?

he has lost it

anyone think an offer had been on the table before this whole thing began a few days back

twat and his agent trying to get the club to agree by leaking the story of him wanting out ?

He's never had a season like Ronaldo and he's thinking he can make more money than Ronaldo.

Young people surprise you when you give them an opportunity.- Sir Alex Ferguson

Tell me about it.

Options seemed have thinned out. He may not want to join City, because of security reasons. His limbs will be in danger. Will have to bide his spare time behind closed doors. Think he should go to MLS.

Don't go there mate. You are in the very minority who realize this truth, but you'll get your head chopped off for it.

Even if they are, good of him to stick around and find out. We've come off three straight seasons of winning the league and missing out on a forth by a point. Then he bails two months into this season. It's a crap excuse. He's full of shit. It was the only thing he could say after Fergie dismantled him.

Would be amusing if Rooney was being fecked with by City and they never offer him a deal. It would be the greatest unsettling of all time.

People seem to be confident that he's not going to Spain because of his wife but for all we know that marriage could be over and he started making waves now because he wants out sooner rather than later.

Again, listen to what Fergie said in his press conference, if that doesn't 'mute' the point then i dont know what does.

This might come as a shock to the likes of you but not everyone on here solely supports the club only because they win trophies.

Supporting a club means sticking with them through the rough and the smooth (that's where the word 'support' comes in).

A lot of people have said that this is potentially a transitional period. Fergie pretty much alluded to it himself with his comments last night.

When the going gets tough, we see what people are made of. Wayne Rooney has shown his colours to be not red or blue but yellow.

What's with marca and their photoshopping?

Old habits die hard with them. Ronaldo was photoshopped umpteen times by them when he was still a United player. That pissed me off but I don't give a shit about them photoshopping Rooney. He's no longer a United player in my eyes.

Think this a good read from very much a long standing and suffering supporter. Dan's been going a long time and writes good blogs.

Not as totemic as Cantona, as reliable as Van Nistelrooy, or as disgustingly brilliant as Ronaldo - why I won't miss Wayne Rooney
One Manchester United fan looks on the bright side

By Daniel Harris

It’s a strange old sickness being a United supporter nowadays, every piece of bad news also a piece of good. A disconcerting paradox, but accurate nonetheless; whether it’s unsold tickets, on-pitch defeat or pessimistic players, with each Glazer-induced reverse, the end of the occupation draws slightly nearer.

Thus part of me wants to thank Wayne Rooney for deciding to leave. Though Fergie, in a pitch-perfect performance, pleaded ignorance as to his reasons, a quick glance at a squad list is all that’s required to make them clarity-clear – he’s simply not prepared to fritter away his best years in selfless failure, a victim of the criminal under-investment that’s a direct consequence of United’s crushing debt.

And you can see his point. Van der Sar, Giggs and Scholes are close to retired, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra and Berbatov nearing the end of their peaks, and their replacements either unproven or 'un up to it'. Even if Smalling, Evans, Cleverley and Hernandez turn out to be good enough in the end, it’ll be several years before they form the nucleus of a title-winning side.

In May – when Rooney would have signed a contract that United never presented, presumably to save a few quid on his pay rise - he commented that were the club to sign a couple of big-name players, they’d have a decent chance of regaining the league. When, by the middle of August, this hadn’t happened, he was suddenly in a position to leave and with good reason to do so, the suppression of the news until this week ensuring it had no impact on season ticket sales that were already well down on previous years.

At least now, there’s one thing less to sell – of the family silver, only Old Trafford and perhaps Nani and Evra remain. And with each atrocity, there remains the forlorn hope that those still ploughing their money into the club will accept that the truth, though painful, remains no less a truth: United are on the way down, the Glazers are the reason why, and the sooner they’re starved out the sooner we can start again.

Of course, Rooney’s eagerness to flee should be in no way surprising. A figurehead of the 'ftbllr' generation, he merrily forsook his boyhood club at the earliest available opportunity, ostensibly for two things: trophies and money. Cachet helped too, but only in the context; like almost all of them, he’s just passing through, an employee, a mercenary, and off as soon as things seem like they might be better elsewhere.

Equally inauthentic is Fergie playing the wounded parent, safe in the knowledge that he’ll never be challenged the next time he eulogises about United’s great "owners" or bemoans the lack of value in the transfer market, because he’s banned everyone who might ask him the relevant question. As for Rooney, if he’s any sort of mensch, he’ll tell the truth when asked to explain himself, but no doubt an arrangement purchasing his silence will be part of any deal.

"There's poignancy in Tevez and Rooney lining up at Eastlands, City able to define themselves only in relation to United"

Instead, succour can be taken in the restoration of United’s squad into a scouse-free zone, never an entirely bad thing. It’s also fair to say that whilst Rooney’s a very good player, he’s by no means a great one - though even if he was, he’d still be just a player. But as it happens, he’s not as totemic as Cantona, as reliable as Van Nistelrooy, nor as disgustingly brilliant as Ronaldo, those three the finest attackers of my United-watching career by an extremely long way.

And finally, to the seeming inevitability of Rooney signing for City. Though I’d not be disingenuous enough to suggest that seeing him in baby blue won’t sting, imagining the state of him by the time he gets there is a consoling thought. Assuming he’s played his last game for United, left to his own vices until January, by then he’ll be so full of bronchitis, cirrhosis, obesity and chlamydia as to render him utterly useless, and that’s before the onset of full-blown bluemonia.

There’s also poignancy in Tevez and Rooney lining up together at Eastlands, City able to define themselves only in relation to United despite it all, their presence perfectly crystallising the hollowness of any subsequent success. Never will there be any illusion that either was seduced by an illustrious history of failure, insignificance and empty seats, the reality inescapable that both have been bribed by the coincidental confluence of pipelines, availability and whim. Even in these depressing times of money lust and financial doping, football is about glory, not success, and representing United means something; as Rooney will discover, playing in Manchester isn’t the same as playing for Manchester, and whether he knows it or not, the crude stench of oil and plastic is a hard one to shake.

Daniel Harris’ new book, On The Road, a journey through a season, is available now from Waterstone’s, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.

hah. Let's hear City fans defend that one.
