MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

Interesting split in opinion here.

Seems a clear division on those 'over the moon' that we've just signed our best player on a new 5 year contract and those that are genuinely disgusted that we haven't told him to sling his hook.

Or to look at it another way - those with intergrity and those with no concept of the word.

Hmmmmmm.....

Alternatively, those who have learnt from this week and those who havent.

You cannot trust Wayne Rooney.

Not when he's talking shit about your players and your future. Not when he says he's changed his mind and is staying longterm.

Hang on. Weren't we all saying the other day that this stuff about the club lacking ambition was bollocks and that he was just after the £300l/week City were offering and that was why we were pissed off with him? That if he wants the money well fine, feck off and take it but don't shit on Manchester United's name on the way out?

Doesn't this u-turn suggest that perhaps he WAS concerned about the future at United (let's be honest, how many of us have looked at our transfer dealings this summer with a feeling of ... umm... is that it?).

We don't doubt the ambition within Fergie or the club per se but we DID worry that perhaps the owners and the debt situation were going to hold us back.

Rooney has clearly had re-assurances about the future and he has signed because, like he said, it was never about seeking a move away for monetary reasons, he just wants to win trophies.

I had it firmly fixed in my head that Rooney was on his way out for a mega-salary at City and I thought he was a cnut to throw everything back in the face of Fergie, the fans and the Club in such a way as to make out it was OUR fault that he was going when, in fact, it was his greed.

I was wrong about the situation and I'm happy he's signed.

To those of you comparing this to Gerrard, you are wrong - Rooney has not put in any sort of transfer request like Stevie G did.

To those of you claiming this is like Ronaldo - get a grip. You don't sign a 5 year extension for nothing. Fergie would not be saying the things he has just said if this was a plan to get rid of Rooney in the summer. He is staying, deal with it.

To those of you moaning, look at it like this, Rooney is a brilliant player, both on and off the pitch. United are a massive winner in all of this.

Lets wait and see what Rooney's new contract is. I have a feeling it won't be that extravagant when you compare it to the ones City hand out. This could be the wake up call the Glazers and Gill need.

I understand people are frustrated, I too myself have been in shock over all this, but lets see how it pans out before we murder the young lad.

Every player who wears the red of United has my support, and Wayne Rooney will be no different. I look forward on what he has to say himself in person.

Its plainly obvious throughout this whole situation how much you rate and like Rooney so I wouldnt expect anything else from you right now, but to claim United are big winners in this is ridiculous, all this has done is show that for key members of the squad to get massive payrises regardless of form and behaviour threaten to completely feck us over and we will cave....Yeah real WIN there.

Ronaldo? He convinced him to sign a new contract and play on for an extra year.

He didn't convince him to stay, he told him he was staying, there was an understanding that if he still wanted to leave in 2009 he would be allowed to, this was in Alex Ferguson's interview last summer. There was no new contract signed after 2007, he wouldn't sign a new contract when he intended to leave.

How much money is he getting then mate?

I haven't seen that anywhere, so you must phone Sky Sports and let them know

Disgusting! How many of you guys make 180,000 quid a year never mind a week?

Hopefully he gets chlamydia and prematurely droops.

I can't believe anyone who supports United has anything but distain for this guy now after the way he's conducted himself.

To be honest, all the main managers who spoke on it said they felt he'd stay, let's not inflate Jose's ego too much here. Jose+Rooney is still on though......in 2012.

I also don't see there being anyway possible he can go to City now, with Ronaldo and Ruud, it's fine, not like we are going to throw death threats at people for openly flirting with Madrid, it's like 500 miles away, Rooney didn't exactly flirt with them or even acknowledge them in it, but if he got death threats this time for 30 people......it'll be 10x worse if he does go to them, Chelsea/Madrid/Barca, I'm sure will be accepted, but no way can I see him moving to City now.

Rio obviously ver happy. Players must all be happy despite what he's said about them :
It was never in doubt in my mind tweeps, wazza is Man utd through and through there's no way I could have seen him playing for another club, defo not a prem club anyway.

If you are looking for principles and integrity then you're in the wrong place.

As long as the trophies keep coming then who the feck cares what United do.

Who's emerged as the winners and losers from Rooney saga?? Ferguson still a hero , Rooney reputation repaired ! Glaziers under pressure!

Mourinho is Nostradamus - pretty sure, he's in close contact with the Sir. He's Old Trafford bound once Sir Alex decides to retire, that's certain for me.

I'm all for Mourinho as Sir Alex' successor.

The fact that it was even a possiblility for him going to City (which it was) still makes it pretty much unforgivable and worrying. So Im still very much

And Rooney is still a wank stain in my eyes. Club has been held to ransom.

Mixed emotions here. Maybe the club will take note of what he said and sign some top notch players now. As for Rooney... well we all say and do stupid things. Part of me wanted him to go but I'm glad he has signed. Lets just crack on now.

Btw, to the Mod who banned Stanley Road... considering the almost instantaneous 180degree change from Caftards loving Rooney to hating him back to loving him again, and thus proving Stan’s point, don’t you think you owe Stan apology for the ridiculous banning?

Rooney has haggled himself a £70,000 pay rise

£180,000.

fecking hell....

I think its the Guardian saying 180,000.

And they said Rooney wanted to leave because United are screwed, not because of money. They're just full of shit.

What do you think he was being offered in August ffs?

Football has progressed since he last signed a contract, as has Rooney. No surprise he gets a wage increase. Its the reality if we want to have the top players in the world at our club.

I'm disgusted with Rooney I really am, I would've preferred to see him shipped off to Italy, however I strongly disagree with anyone who thinks that Rooney is the winner here, surely SAF is the winner? He performance over the past few days has been sensational.

Once we hopefully hear the true figures we'll see, but like everyone else I'll be devastated if we have given in.

Conclude with that.

Genius of a press conference that started all the pressure on Rooney.

He is vital to the club, we need to build and without him it would have been very difficult but the disappointment I've went through in the last few days won't be forgotten easy.

Rooney currently doing an interview which will air on MUTV/manutd.com at 6:30.
