Mesut Özil

When everything is going shit for them I have the tendency to not appreciate it as much as I should, as I respect them a lot as a club. It's only when they are doing well that you realise what a bunch of annoying cnuts a large portion of their fans are.
Something like this.

When they're falling apart I actually feel quite bad for them, coz I'd rather have them up there, then City/Pool etc, but the second they're on a decent run, it's just unbearable.

I must admit, the "easiest" set of supporters to get along with here in SA (there's not a huge variety) are surprisingly the Chelsea fans. Maybe they've had enough success to be "secure" or maybe they just not invested in their team (though the group we usually chat to are from London, working here) to really care, but they not the conspiracy theorists or hate filled loons, most of the others are.

Ozil is the best player in the league. I'm not going on today's performance, he was immediately the league's best player the second they signed him. Best signing since we signed RVP.
As much as I like him, I'd put Rvp higher. He's probably been only behind messi and Ronaldo over the last 2 years. But Ozil is right after that and should soon be the best. Although he'll be at a disadvantage being at arsenal and not a side challenging.

Had Bale signed for United I'm confident that you'd all be saying Bale was twice the player that Ozil is.

Not at all. Bale was probably 4th best player in the league last season for me. Behind RVP, Mata and Suarez. Definitely not as good a player as Ozil is and I've been saying that all along, even before Ozil left Madrid.
As I say that he scores

Its a tough one to call. Ozil is just as prolific with assists and key passes as RVP is in front of goal. I don't think Ozil being at Arsenal will hinder him. They're easily a top 4 club with some really good players. Carzola, Wilshire, Ramsey, Arteta, Walcott and Ozil is a great set of midfielders to choose from, then you can add in Podolski, Ox, Sagna, Vermaelen and Koscielny. Giroud isn't a brilliant forward but I don't think he'll need to be if chances are put on a plate for him and Ozil will do that week in week out.

Every once in a while a club makes a signing that transforms them, Ozil could well be the man that has Arsenal seriously challenging for the title again.

I think Rvp has been more influential in recent times. Ozil is super creative but Rvp has been such a supreme match winner with both arsenal and us, I'd have him ahead.

Ozil should on paper be the best in have league very soon. He's better than everyone else apart from Rvp IMO and he's entering his prime whereas Rvp could be going past it soon, and I think he's at the age where he can improve further. But the reason I say being at arsenal couldn't be a hinderence is because I feel although he's as transformational a signing as arsenal could have made, they still need a lot more, and taking that into account being at a side not winning honors could hurt his case.

Ozil will have a cantona like effect for arsenal. I cannt believe we still have an arse haired scouser who wants to be somewhere else when this talent was available to replace him

AS annoyed as I am at seeing my club sell Ozil (and believe me ive very annoyed!!!), I read some things on here that sound so exaggerated. Ozil is not the best in the world and he isnt even top5 or top 10. The thing is he is a diamond for the eye due to his skills. He also has several moments of magic which are for sure top 3 in the world...but he is way too inconsistant. He tends to vanish in matches and he also runs out of steam after around 60-70 minutes. Its a shame... if he sorted that out out he has the potentiela of being top 5...without a doubt.

I would be annoyed too, at least you have isco, although on the downside you also have bale :)

I think it will be between Ozil and Rooney for most assists this season.

That video was great. Thanks for posting, Alastair.

As good as Ozil is, something tells me we would not have utilised him very well. If we are going to replace Rooney, we need a more dynamic number 10.

Ashley Young or a 40year old Ryan Giggs on the left for us or Ozil? Why we didn't sign him when he was clearly available and willing to come to England is baffling. Beggars belief imho!

I highly doubt he would have signed for United when the idea is playing him as a winger to complement Rooney in the middle. If Arsenal offered the same money and Wenger promised to build the team around him and use him in his prefered position, he might have chosen that anyway.

Ozil would have been a far better no. 10 for us than Rooney.

He might have chosen Arsenal but we should have asked the question regardless. Why we didn't I don't understand as the lad is one of the worlds best and better than what we have.

Yeah, but there are quite a lot wide players out there who are better than Young and Giggs and who would have loved to come to United and would be happy to play that position for years. That's why I don't understand the moaning. You don't buy a player for 50m and pay him very high wages to play him out of position.

Unfortunately he will be king of Arsenal for many years to come, and he will be best player of the league for many years to come too, if not the best already.

The club's stance is that he plays in Rooney's position and with Rooney staying, there was no chance of him coming here when he was offered to United.

Perhaps and I don't doubt that but I don't think in the long term he's the solution to the number 10 position. We basically need to find a similar player to Rooney in terms of all round goal threat and physicality in that position. I wouldn't mind signing Ozil if we were committed to changing the way we play drastically, but under Moyes I don't think he'd have been a super success, he'd have been good but not £42.5m worth of good. I'd rather sign players Moyes is comfortable with using, ideally an Ozil/Rooney type hybrid who is quick & industrious, very direct, technically gifted with great vision and fits into our high tempo of play.

To be fair, I'm not advocating that we should have bought Ozil, I'd much rather give Kagawa a chance there instead of dumping him on either wing or on the bench. I don't agree that we need a similar player to Rooney in there either.

My worry is that both Kagawa and Ozil would struggle playing in that role for our side due to the style we play. We need our number 10 type players to be goal scorers in their own right and direct in their passing. When I say Rooney, I allude to the young Wayne Rooney, the matchwinner... with pace, ferocity and a good first touch playing behind Van Nistelrooy and Saha.

Yeah, that Rooney was ace, but I can't think of any players out there like that at the moment.

Kagawa could match Rooney's scoring from last season when played in that role. He's a very direct player who loves to get into scoring positions, he's very different to Özil.

There is seemingly no end to all the things Kagawa could do. Quite possibly the best player ever to not show anything in a United shirt.

Is it out of position?
