It's fairly simples.
RVP is a quality player when fit, one of the top 5 strikers in the world. I don't think any of that is in question. However;
1) He is 29, not in line with our general transfer policy.
2) £24m is more than what most people expected us to pay for him.
3) He has had a lot of fitness issues. Last season was the first time he stayed relatively injury free in a long time.
4) RVP and Rooney are pretty much guarantees starters, where does that leave Hernandez, Welbeck and Kagawa, not to mention our wingers?
5) We have still not addressed the CM issue and its looking like we arent going to this summer.
6) Berbatov is still on the books with the end of the transfer window approaching.
Sorry to be "that guy" and if we signed Modric I would be the first to unzip, but the above are all valid points. I'm sure RVP and Rooney will be a great partnership, the problem is that they will have an empty hole behind them because we have no fecking midfielders, and it means less games for Welbeck and Hernandez.
1. SAF decides our 'transfer policy', nobody else. If he feels a 40 year old is worth a punt then that's his decision. In other words, SAF is our transfer policy.
2. Value. We paid what SAF thought was the 'value' of the player. That is what he means by 'value' in the market. He's explained it yet so many don't understand the 'value' concept. And 24m for the EPL player of the previous season's not bad going I'd say, especially considering the selling club is an English 'rival'
3. Sure, but you could sign Modric tomorrow for 40m and then he breaks his leg in training before even playing a match...point being, there's risk involved in any transfer. Yes he's injury prone, but when fit he's brilliant and his fitness has improved drastically. Plus we've other strikers who can rotate if he was out
4. Sure they would be first choice but rotation's not been abnormal in the Utd squad over the past few seasons. There will be healthy competition for spots and I think Danny will be just fine. If anything, Hernandez will suffer most but SAF will manage that, he's the best in the business for a reason.
5. Ever considered that SAF actually doesn't think we've a CM issue at all? No seriously, consider it for a second.
6. From SAF's comments on RvP it seems Berbatov will off. He was speaking of rotating between RvP, Rooney, Kagawa, Chicha and Welbeck. No mention of Berbatov so I suspect he's off.
Sorry to be 'that guy' but if we signed Modric he'd block the progress of Clevs and Ando etc etc etc.
Just be happy man and trust SAF to figure out the CM 'issue'
