Neymar

I have indeed picked it up some time ago, but the Olympics were last year. Make no mistake, that was big for Brazil, as they have never won the darn thing.

He was largely anonymous.

He wasnt great, certainly, but he was decent.

Looking forward to see what he becomes given a year or two in Europe though. He still needs to work on his game a great deal so I feel going to one of the big Spanish two isn't ideal, though Barcelona was probably the better choice out of the two. He'll need a lot of protection from his manager in his first year because he'll face fierce criticism after a few, IMO to be expected, below par performances.

If thats his real name why is it a problem? Perhaps people in his family call him Junior not Neymar.

Anyway its better than having bloody Chicharito or Chucho

No problem, jjust seems odd that hes only just decided to have it all of a sudden. He hasn't been arsed before.

Who knows, why has he suddenly decided to wear number 10 instead of 11 for Brazil?.

Probably been told by his public relations people that Neymar JR looks more iconical? and that number 10 is a more famous number.

He's always had it on his shirt.

I believe he has always had 'Neymar Jr' on his club shirt, as it was on all of his Santos shirts (certainly since 2008, probably before too).
For Brasil, he has only just added the 'Jr' onto the end, & used to have 'Neymar' on all the Brasil shirts previous to this confed cup.

I assume that someone has advised him it would be best to have the exact same name for both club & country for marketing reasons - like Cristiano Ronaldo, if he wants to capitalize on his worldwide appeal he is going to need to stick to one nickname in order to become a brand himself. Ronaldo opened his 'CR7' line of clothing shops while he was at United, & supposedly faced trouble when he ended up #9 at Real (not knowing he would be back to #7 in just a year). I've heard that he even went so far as to scratch off the 'CR7' from a coffee table in his house, but i'm not so sure about it.

Lovely strike.

Immensely punchable face though.

It seems to be popular to consider this boy to be overrated. I promise you, he is a phenomenal talent. I have watched him closely since 2010, since he made his debut for Brazil in impressive fashion against the United States. I believe him to be a future Ballon d'Or winner.

It's a popular opinion among people who've been watching football for a long time and are suspicious of fannyballers.

He's been mediocre in 90% of his international matches (mediocre for a Brazilian international, that is, not Gibson mediocre or anything like that). All appearance of talent is relative to context. If you put John Walters against a load of fifteen-year olds he could probably look like Zidane.

For me the young talents who have proven themselves in European football - Gotze, particularly, and Isco - have shown more than Neymar. I'm sure he's very talented, but we've seen little to actually prove it yet.

Ive been watching him for to 2 years now, he has shown tons to prove he is talented. 2 goals in 2 games so far at the confeds cup and both of them top drawer.

Great volley into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

That's 2 cracking volleys in 2 games.

Is he only capable of scoring worldies?

Pete's clearly a fine judge, this kid ain't just a show pony... alot of potential to work with here.

He's pretty good at football when he wants to stay on his feet.

If he has the attitude to work on his game every day he can become one of the best in the world no doubt.

The talent and skills are already there if he can match this with a the right attitude Barca is going to have a lot of fun with the little fella.

Excellent performance tonight. Clearly an enormous talent whatever anyone has to say about his current level. He is pretty much exactly what Barcelona need.

Don't worry, pete's been embarrassing himself for a long time in this thread. It's great entertainment.

Neymar's assist for the other goal was even more impressive than the goal itself. Lovely piece of skill and a very good ball to pick out the right man.

I thought he was overrated and pompous, but looks like he's talented and well spoken.

I just really, really hate him. I've no discernable logical reason for doing so, I just really hate him. I hope all his hair falls out and his balls tighten in an irregular manner at inconvenient moments in his playing career.

To be fair, he has been much better in this competition. Before now, his performances for Brazil have mostly been either completely anonymous, or anonymous for 80 minutes but with one brilliant goal or dribble thrown in.

I don't count a lot of his Brasileirao football because he comes up against such awful defenders. It's simply not comparable to what Gotze encounters in the Bundesliga, or even someone like Isco in La Liga.

Yep. Wish he flops with Barca
