Norwich City vs. Manchester United

I don't quite understand the new Valencia, its like everytime he gets to the edge of the box he thinks "best wait till the Norwich defenders make it back to the box before I cross", as to be polite or something and then 10 minutes later proceeds to produce an abomination of ball. Hit it in early FFS!

We lack movement and thrust.

Exactly what Cleverley and or Anderson bring.

Bring on the wisdom teeth.

Do we ever attack with pace on the break anymore? Or does Ashley Young only understand how to pass backwards?

Extremely poor first half.

Slow in the midfield, in terms of effort and creativity. Giggs, partly to blame for this.

Valencia slowing the game down again and again. Young, simply poor.

Pathetic stuff. I suspect Giggs or Valencia will be switched for others in the 2nd half.

Where is rooney?

Injured.

I'm the first to say we shouldn't play G or S in a midfield 2. Well, not the first, but one of the top six or eight hundred thousand.

Still, it remains true that Giggsy's created our best chance, out of nothing. As Scholes did last week.

Yep, t'is true. But then when we're stuck playing like this, and our wingers aren't on form (which they aren't) then we're basically waiting for that one moment when Giggs or Scholes will do that.

On the other hand, we could play some of our more dynamic midfielders and hopefully create more than one chance a half.

It's always possible we wont. But it would be nice to try it.

Fantastic first half, we haven't conceded, kept tight in midfield and created plenty of chances. Lets hope we can nick one in the 2nd half and we will still be top tonight. Go UNITED!

Maybe Fergie has some revolutionary Barcelona-esque vision of football except with the football being focused on wideplay rather than tiki-taka. Like developing a form of wideplay that is unplayable. Which sounds cool to me but can it work without any intention of giving a feck about passing the ball through the middle?

Well at least I hope there's some vision like that because watching it is an utter fecking bore.

This is anti-Barcelona. Football without any midfield.

Giggs has been pretty good, just been trying too many Hollywood passes. Valencia has been awful, and young has done nothing. They're just lacking so much self confidence it's ridiculous. Valencia needs 5 touches before he crosses it, and young only ever passes back to Carrick or evra. Bring on Anderson for one of the wingers and push giggs out on the wing.

Of course there's nothing wrong with playing wingers. But when you're entirely reliant on them and your entire attacking plan is "play it out to them at the first chance" then it's a both a crap, and a corrosive attitude.

As I said, no plan B.

We've been playing like this all season. Whenever we play a midfield two with two of Carrick, Giggs & Scholes.

We've been saying it all season.

Everyone's been saying it all season.

We STILL keep doing it.

It's baffling.

It's annoying too, especially when Fergie keeps Anderson and Cleverley on the bench. With those two on today, we'd have made mincemeat out of these fecking wurzel-munchers. All they've got is the hope that they'll catch us out on the counter-attack.

If only Anderson was on the pitch to pass the ball to Norwich players.

I would love to know why Valencia has adopted this new attacking style of stopping the play completely? He used to run at defenders and rip them a new arse hole, but all he is seemingly doing atm is putting his foot on the ball and looking at the defender in front of him. It is not affective at all.

What the hell has happened to him ? His game used to be more direct and more "I cross whenever I have a chance". All he does nowadays is wait for the full back and tries to cross through his legs

It wouldn't really matter if he was there. If you don't hoof the ball away at every opportunity, you don't get picked.

Yeah but it's not like RVP has been doing any different, if you play with 2 wingers like we are at the moment then they will inevitably see most the ball in the final third as they're the ones in space. Giggs and Carrick have tried to support centrally but they can only do so much. If you want more variety then the wingers have to come inside at times which is more down to how Fergie wants to play rather than the midfielders making it happen.

Young and Valencia are utterly shocking at the moment. Neither of them has the confidence to do anything with the ball other than just give it back to Evra/Rafael/Carrick.
Really need Nani and Kagawa back . Anything would be better than these two on the wing.

To be fair Giggs is at least trying to make something happen. However, in general, our mobility is poor. We lack a player that can take the ball and run at people. Its all well and good to pass the ball around but lets actually try and take on a defender or two and rattle them.

Valencia has been poor so far this season.

in fact all our wingers have been poor....

It boggles my mind as to why we persist with this predictable wingplay of ours when our wingers have been so poor. We have a perfectly fit Anderson and Cleverley to choose from too.

I've come to the conclusion that this ponderous default we've adapted in recent years is all Quieroz's fault. Right now though I remain utterly baffled as to how no one in our coaching staff can see how average some of our midfield combinations are.

Exactly, the most predictable player ever.

Okay, I know SAF might look at Nani and say "he's been a bad boy", but come the feck on, both Young and Valencia have been shit compared to their capabilities, and in no way do they deserve playing time over Nani playing like this.
Not to mention having 4 midfielders on the bench and we're probably only going to see one of them on the pitch for 20 minutes while we continue this....shit.

Well, we're not playing well but that's hardly unexpected. At least we haven't conceded yet. Though I'm not sure that's actually a good thing, considering our games this season.

Plan A: pass the ball to Valencia on the right
Plan B: see Plan A

It's like watching a castrated bull half-heartedly nuzzling a crippled yellow heiffer without ever getting round to actually humping her.

I wish we'd shift from 4-4-2 but that isn't even the big issue today, this Norwich team are nothing special but our wingers are so out of form right now it's making it easy for them to defend since playing it out to them seems to be the entire plan of attack.

Agree with this. I hadn't seen this post, or i would not have basically repeated what you said in my post.

We have been ok. Nothing more nothing less.

Controlled most of the game, but apart from the end failed to really put pressure on Norwich.

Hoolahan has pulled their strings and they have had a couple of moments. Smalling apart from his last ditch tackle has looked rusty. Rio far too easily beaten leading up to smallings tackle.

Apart from that I fully expect us to win this game.

All season? We've always played that way. I don't get why people are suddenly complaining about this gameplan now when it is the individuals that are the problem. It is unimaginative though.

Does Ashley Young actually cross the ball anymore? He was quite decent crossing from the left with his right boot. Don't see any of those anymore because all he seems to do is pass the ball square or backwards. Doesn't even think about running with it and daresay beat a defender.

The worrying thing is, Norwich did not look that special either in that half but still carved out the better chances.
