Paul Pogba

As I said though, there's nothing wrong with picking up those positions, it's a positive thing that he was trying to, not a negative that it didn't work.

Overall I thought it was a good cameo from him.

Here's a video of all his touches, so it doesn't really show the positioning we are talking about but I still think there is some real maturity in his play there. His passes were all done with thought and he played exactly how he should have at 2-0 up.

I like Pogba, a lot, but there was only one pass in that video that was beyond basic. I am not saying that I am doubting his potential, simply that I didn't think that he played that well against West Brom.

He played 20 minutes....The game was pretty much a non entity after the second goal. He did fine.

How anyone thinks we have a relaistic shot in the Champions League with a midfield of

Carrick (good - not great)
Cleverly (Young and injury prone but exciting)
Anderson (really limited player and injured all the time)
Giggs (Class act tbf)
Scholes (Still good but not great as he once was)

Is insane imo.

We should sign Modric and possibly one other.

Get your point.

At the same time, I vividly remember a Talksport (or similar) funnyman arguing United would never win the Champions League with a strikeforce of Yorke, Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (the last in full name and with emphasis to show how ridiculous a proposition it was).

It was ~September 98.

Whatever happens, he's still nowhere near first tram ready. I really hope we send him on loan to the championship instead of rushing him into the first team next season if we haven't strengthened the team.

And it's something Pogba needs to improve on. I'm saying this based on his reserve appearances and not just his cameos for the first team. A better way of explaining it is that Pogba needs to take more responsibility on the pitch to take that next step. By this I mean he needs to be looking for the ball more as sometimes he just jogs off up the pitch.

Last night, for example, he was playing CM and at one point in the game he was playing ahead of our left winger whilst our RB had the ball. He was way out of position and he should be the one collecting the ball off the RB and passing it around. He's one of the best passers we have in our whole squad, he needs to use that to his advantage.

I haven't seen last nights game yet so I can't really comment but I really feel Pogba has similarities to Carrick in that he doesn't really impose himself on games but allows everyone around him to play better by picking them out with his passing and offering himself, maybe it's something he could improve on and at his age he can improve on everything but maybe thats not how he is being shaped. Alongside Tunnicliffe last year it was hard to impose himself as it was very much Tunnicliffes role to take the game by the scruff of the neck and pulling the strings in attack seems to be a role Petrucci has taken up recently so with Tunnicliffe back it's hard to see where he's supposed to impose himself now.

I'm not saying it was a world beating performance either, I'm just saying he did nothing wrong. It was a mature performance, he stepped in and kept the ball moving while covering a bit defensively. There really isn't anything to be critical of which is the point i am making.

Are you lot really debating a 20 minute cameo against a poor team we had already beaten by then?

Despite the passes being basic, I'm surprised at how good he looks in that clip. But then, those are the times he passed, therefore got, the ball somehow.

Most of the time he seemed to be in the completely wrong place to actually participate in the game in a fruitful way. Maybe I was too distracted by the City game, dunno.

If reserves is too low a level for him, throw him to the dogs at Bilbao. Let him get a clear view of how much work still needs to be done to match his first team aspirations.

Realistically, you are completely correct. There is no way we would ever win the Champions League with that midfield. More than likely we'd have to beat Barcelona along the way and Carrick etc would be left watching in awe as they were in our last two CL finals. Modric wouldn't exactly inspire me with much extra hope to be honest.

nor is Rio, never mind Evans

I think Rio was at one point, perhaps over that 2 year spell where we reclaimed our first league in a while and then won the double. In 07/08, I remember him losing a single header with Kenwyn Jones, and that's about it!

fecking hell Rio was some defender in that season. Amazing in every aspect. I've not been around long enough to see every great United defender, but I'd be shocked if there was one better than him throughout our history.

Somewhere i there is the crux, isn't it? Which midfield would you be actually confident of against Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and Messi? Its a ridiculous proposition to be comparing your team all the time with a freak of a nature side.

If we were playing Milan, R. Madrid or City, I'd be okay facing them with a midfield trio of Carrick, Cleverley and Giggs or Scholes. Obviously we can be much better there. A player who can retain the ball under pressure and easy in possession would help. But by no means are we uncompetitive in our present set up. Especially since we focus so much on wing play.

No I'm talking about every appearance I've seen from Pogba, including Reserves etc.

Maybe you are, but others aren't.

And most of the comments from people are about how he played in those 20 minutes.

I wouldn't class Giggs as "A class act" and Carrick as "good but not great" personally.

Ryan Giggs is a wonderful player.

He is not a class act in the centre of midfield I'm afraid. Paul Scholes is still a class act at centre mid. Giggs is a winger who has found himself in there later in his career. Useful and at times very good definately. A class act? Not in that position.

Personally i think against West brom he was told to keep it simple, recieve the ball and pass it off early and dont try anything too silly.

Against stoke he was alot more adventorous because the game was dead, but against west brom 2 goals isnt the end of the game as we all know.

I don't buy this 'can't win the Champions League with A or B' argument. Liverpool won it with the 5th best team in England, probably outside the top 10 in Europe. The best team doesn't always win it, as has been shown in 2010, 2007, 2005, 2004, I could literally go on and on. In 05 and 04 they weren't even close to being the best in Europe.

Hes got that arrogant lacksidasical style. He won't last long in the first team strolling around like that.

Before I decide if he's great or rubbish I need confirmation if he's decided to stay or move.

I hope he doesn't take this long to make up his mind when he's bearing down on goal.

I'd say that was a fairly impressive cameo appearance watching that video.

He played it simple, kept the ball moving with mostly 1 touch passing only missed one pass that I could see & fluffed a possible shot on goal.

Should see one of the passes he played in the reserves last night. Was just like David Silva's best pass of the season to set up that goal against us

Pogba has already signed the contract IMO, or he would not be playing or training like last week simples.

We have just decided to keep it quiet and out the press, as all this media attention on him is doing no good at all.

We dont have to disclose contracts with the press at all, so with this 1 i think we have decided to keep it quiet.

Im sure I heard Blackburn are yet to win a home game this season in the reserves. Hardly a fair comparison is it?

Blackburn more or less matched us in central midfield last night IMO. And that's with Petrucci having a good game. Don't know how anyone could have watched it and come away with anything other than a lot of reservations over how good Pogba is right now.

All the potential in the world and has enough moments of class in any reserves game to look great on highlights but he's got a long way to go before he's pushing for a place in our starting line-up.

You are only as good as the players you play with.

To be fair the first 20 minutes he was running the show, but we had little threat upfront imo

Surely announcing that he's signed the contract would kill off all the media attention though, wouldn't it?

I know what you're saying and agree mostly but at the risk of getting accused of Anderson bashing, some of his performances for the reserves over the years have been about 20 times worse!

I don't believe staring in the reserves indicates what you'd do with the first team. Just remember Martin and Chris Eagles...

In fairness you're being generous in looking at it that way. If players are too good for the reserves it doesn't necessarily indicate they'll be good enough for the first team but the presumption isn't as valid when they haven't been stand out performers in the reserves (I'm just making a general point, not really referring to Pogba).

Exactly, the same as fabio played for the reserves last night, now i would not have said he was some prodigal son from brazil that debuted for us at 18 and played in a CL final against barcelona off that game, but we know what hes capable of.

Reports are suggesting he has but it's no different to reports suggesting he had signed for Juventus.

Just wait until the club gives offical confirmation and he's sat with Gill and Ferguson. Or... we announce that terms could not be agreed and he will indeed be departing.

Agreed.

If they ever post a picture with just Ferguson and no Gill then all bets are off...
