Paul Pogba

Cleverley and Anderson have been out for long periods. I doubt they can provide the energy to match Athletico. I'd just go with Anderson, Cleverley, and Pogba as our midfield.

Rio, Evans, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, and Rooney should all be rested.

Cleverley/Ando combo would be good, both like to pass and move, although i can't see us playing Pogba in the same line up.

Great minds Sults ;)

If you've not seen much of Pogba at youth or reserve level, this video pretty much sums up what he's capable of. Look out for his goal against City and the pass at 5:00, which is one of my favourites. This is why I think he reminds me of Scholes so much..

May as well bump this again. Make his imminent signing all the more exciting/departure all the more painful.

I wonder whether he's still considered as 'just a reserve' by the top reds if the boy signs and United decide not to spend anymore money in CM

If he stays and if Fergie decides not to spend any more money on CM then he clearly won't be considered "just a reserve", will he?

Two big ifs though.

Its amazing how his talent is evaluated by certain guys according of whether he signs or not. The next big thing can swiftly turn into 'just a reserve' in just few days

In my opinion he's a promising kid who is still rough in the edges. He's got great potential but he's not what our midfield needs. What we need is sheer quality with the right mentality on who would provide a change of mentality in CM and allow players like Pogba and Cleverley to develop accordingly.

If our goal for the match is to get some match time for our 'rusty' players, then yes start Ando, Clev and Pogba in midfield together. But if our goal is to win the game and progress, then we definitely need Carrick in there somewhere. Atletico are a different ball game to the lower premier league teams and I don't think we can afford to play 3 players in midfield who have had very little playing time recently if we want to win.

Who is evaluating his talent on whether he signs or not?

Even if Pogba stays and Cleverley/Anderson stay fit for large parts of next season, not buying a quality midfielder will be suicidal next season.Scholes helped us dodge a massive bullet in this one

At this moment in time I'd have Pogba ahead of Jones in centre-mid...

Maybe can help us dodge a massive bullett next season too?

Hopefully yes cnut.Scholesy is a genius and it never get tiresome to see him play.I think you know what I meant

I know what you mean, I just disagree. We have enough quality and talent even without Scholes.

Carrick, Anderson, Cleverley, Giggs, Jones. And hopefully Scholes, Fletcher and Pogba.

Great news if true. SSN Sources tend to be right most of the time.

Duncan Castles was supposedly right most of the time too, so who do I believe? SAF said yesterday Pogba was still making his mind up and it was unlikely he went into training today and said "Where's the contract at?"

From the devilish extreme to another.

You must have been completely taken aback when Fergie signed Young, Smalling and Jones in the summer. What with your perennial opinion that we never need to sign anyone ever.

I would be very concerned, for very different reasons, if Fergie went into next season with Giggs, Anderson and Jones as three of our five best central midfielders.

Had we had Fletcher fit all season I don't think midfield would be an issue personally but with him out and if the club doubt a return then I agree we need another midfielder, preferably someone established. However I can't see us bringing in someone without someone else going as when people are fit we're well stocked in terms of numbers. Personally I think Ando could be on the way out if Scholes signs for another year.

I think Ando should be scrapped off that list.
Proved that he is not a reliable performer.
Good first season and his next best spell was just before he signed his new deal (coincidence?).
Other than that it's been one big mish-mash of injuries and underwhelming performances.
Can't help the injuries obviously but being prone to them contributes to him not being a player that can be relied upon.
Hasn't made same signs of progression as Nani, who he came in with at the same time.
Huge question mark over him for me and not someone I'd put in first batch with Carrick, Cleverley, Giggs and Jones.
Think buying a big name will be counter-productive, given what SAF said about PP being a f/t player now.
Do that and what will he be thinking? At the same time he too shouldn't be someone we are relying on just yet so it's a catch 22.

There's a difference between need to have (or "suicidal if not") and nice to haves. Ie, by players that are better than what we have and will improve us. Not many players that do.

Don't think Sir Alex has given up on Anderson.

Heh, calling Cnut the anti devilish is a pretty good assessment.

It's unbelievable how he can constantly and relentlessly think our squad doesn't need strengthening really.

I don't want to give up on him either but at the end of the day he can't stay fit and having two midfielders in Ando and Clev who see quite injury prone, two midfielders who can't play every game in Scholes and Giggs, and fletch who is a question mark and surely will always be a question mark now, just can't work. It's cost us points already and arguably a spot in the next round of the CL. I can't see any additions without someone leaving. Ando may have more than a future than Scholes, but scholes is quite reliable in terms of fitness and is clearly a better player so in this situation I would think short term. It's either that or we sign no one and I can't see that either.

A team and a squad always have to strive to improve. You can do that by buying new players and by developing players at the club.

To be sustainable, you need to do both.

United's success is built on long-term developments, and have gained rewards from sticking with players which other clubs might well have given less time to produce results.

What I have said for years re. the midfield is, by all means buy, but buy someone that improves what we we already have. I might be guilty of overrating what we have, or others guilty underrating what we have.

With Fletcher hopefully back we might just be ok in central midfield for next season if Pogba does indeed sign too. Tunnicliffe is just another loan move next season away from maybe being a useful player to bring off the bench for us in August 2013!! But I wouldnt say no to another central mid to come in the summer and and give more competition for places. Pogba can do either the Scholes or the Keane/Carrick role apparently so if ready he will be good cover.

I really hope Fergie goes back to 3 central midfielders against the top European teams next season with possibly a lone striker up front as not doing so this season seemed to cost us bigtime

What? You've constantly said lately that our midfield doesn't need any investing at all. You keep disagreeing with me when I say we should buy players. Oh, and make up things that I supposedly said too

With the players we have, we don't NEED another midfielder, that's right.

That's where we differ.
