Insurance policies usually only pay out a percentage of the wages to football clubs, and it needs to be a fairly significant injury. I doubt they'd be paying the full amount on a perma-crock like Jones.
Just to give an idea of how long we'll have to live with Phil Jones.

An emblem of the mediocrity that has crept I to this club and has become a cancer. Whoever made the decision to renew his contract should not be at this club.
I really, really hope we just did it to get more money for him the summer.

I'm not sure how the argument "even if he is injured, insurance pays, so he costs the club nothing" can seriously be put forward by some.
He costs us nothing....other than the opportunity cost of having him replaced by someone of greater quality, right? Thus moving forward with a better squad, on top of (hopefully) also having him replaced by someone who is less injury prone - thus also having more selection options available for the manager.
So in fact, he does cost us something. Just by being here, it means we're not actively replacing him with anyone better & less injury prone. And even moreso when he is injured.
He is still our best defender when fit and will probably be in 4 years time the way we buy players.
Can we send him to China?
Unfortunately that's like 15 games a season.
Makes a mockery of our club and sick of seeing memes with him and Smalling. The pair have become a joke. Not good enough to wear the shirt.

One of the most stupid decisions we've made. Which other big club would give him essentially a 5 year contract?
Every time I see him in the lineup I know it's going to be a bad day for United. There is no other top tier club I can see this occurring
Imagine if instead of binning him, City offered Micah Richards another 4 years because he showed promise in a few games over the last few seasons. Or if they gave Sagna/Clichy another year extension because "they're good characters in the dressing room" or "they've shown loyalty".

Not sure why he gets so much hate! When he plays he's fine and a decent backup option! Its not his fault he's injury prone (I was when I played) and It's not his fault the board are stupid enough to offer an injury prone player a long term contract!
When he plays the defence act like the house is on fire and they all run around like headless chickens. He just brings chaos.
Whenever he isn't there we seem much calmer and organised.
It might be that we just don't want to do more transfer business than we already need to? But this is something that's been going on for a long time, I honestly can't understand it. Is it because he's a good lad? Don't wanna hurt his feelings by binning him?
We as a club love hoarding deadwood because we are simply shite at selling players. When we give average players ~100k a week it's no wonder the midtable teams steer clear, no team is lining up to make Phil Jones one of their highest earners. Unless his new contract is a lower salary then he's staying for a while. We had a golden chance to let him go for free and we fecked it.
IMHO he and Smalling get way too much hate from United fans. We do also need English players in our squad because home grown rules are tightening. They are good defenders and by far not the worst of our problems.
In terms of homegrown players, we're fine. Grant, Pereira, Jones, Lingard, Lukaku, McTominay, Pogba, Shaw, Smalling and Young are all homegrown. And in a few years we'll have more homegrown players who'll be part of the 25 man squad like Rashford (isn't part of the 25 as he was younger than 21 at the start of the season). And the rule isn't specifically that you have to have 8 homegrown players, it's just that you can't have more than 17 non homegrown players in the 25 man squad.
I'd rather keep Smalling and sell Jones. Smalling has at least had long periods of being consistent and reliable, not great but still decent. Jones is unreliable. We can cope with losing the likes of Jones, Young and Grant. If we're gonna have homegrown players, why not have good ones? Not like we can't buy more reliable ones.
They’re not great and we should aspire to be better. I don’t want to hate on them, but these are the exact sort of players that we need to be ruthless with and move them on.
Smalling and Jones are not the problem, it's not like either player is on big wages or kick up a big stink if they don't start.
The problem is that the centerbacks who United have spent big money on (Bailly, Lindelof) haven't been good enough to displace them. That is the problem. Smalling and Jones are fine as 3rd and 4th choice, but your first choice centerback pairing should be world class.

I personally don’t hate THEM.
But say you went into a coma in 2012, just woke up now, and were told Jones and Smalling were still our CB pair.
Vidic and Ferdinand were close to the end, to hear their understudies were still there, you’d imagine they really grabbed that brass ring and fulfilled their potential.
Then you’d hear we only won 1 league title since then, Jones has been injured 90% of that time and you’d watch Smalling attempt to play football...
I don’t hate them, I hate that our standards are now so low compared to when we had ambitions, that they haven’t been fecked off yet.
Whoever made the decision to give the guy who made this decision the right to make decisions needs to be ejected from the club.

They don't get too much hate I'd say it's more frustration, some fans know we won't be winning anything worth chatting about with the chuckle brothers playing regularly. That seems to be the problem with some United fans, we are laying in 6th and some are saying they are grand. The acceptance of mediocrity and not striving for upgrades is my issue. No other side in the league would be relying on a 2011 central defense who haven't improved.

Exactly this. Ultimately, the players we have brought in of late haven’t done the business. Ultimately, the club probably felt they were signing a new back 4 with Darmian, Bailly, Lindelöf and Shaw. As it stands, we have still had Valencia, Smalling, Jones and Young for much of the time.
I think it also shouldn’t be underestimated that the club probably want to keep some players in the dressing room who actually remember what it’s like to win a PL title with us. I always felt that was a failing of Arsene Wenger. Got rid of every title winning player way too soon, and his squad looked like a bunch of talented but lost kids with no guidance.
That’s fine. I just don’t see much wrong with keeping Jones as fourth choice CD as opposed to Rojo and Bailly. He’s unreliable fitness wise but still a good defender. I can’t think of many better English CDs to be backups that won’t cost exorbitant fees. I want Tuanzebe out on loan again.
In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need him but in terms of our current squad composition, there’s lots more players I’d rather shift than Phil Jones. I’m not saying he’s amazing but do think he and Smalling get unnecessary abuse really. I’ve seen many comments recently blaming them for our woes when they are an incredibly small factor.
If we’d have signed better defenders 2/3/4 years ago, I’d be all for selling both of them. As it happens, Lindelof is only slightly ahead of them (arguably) and Bailly and Rojo are not as good. At the moment, I’d sell the latter two and buy a top quality CD. Then, in a year, sell one of Smalling or Jones to make room for a more experienced Tuanzebe back from loan.
Yes it is easy to blame our old players that played under SAF, but the problem has been our recruitment and getting in worse players than those we had.
Although for some reason people think Jones and Smalling is the big problem yet guys like Sanchez and Lukaku are not talked about as big problems in the same way.
If we actually had some quality attackers doing the job it would help our defense/team a lot.

I wouldn't mind this if he wasn't a starting option tbh. Backup he should be good enough but never as a starter.
