Phil Jones

He's a centre half. He reads the game brilliantly. He'll make a shed load of interceptions and carries it out of the back well.

Having watched him for the first time properly, I'm most excited about him.

I can't believe how good Jones actually was today, simply amazing in everything he did really. So much class.

I did say early in this thread he would be our best signing this season. United had been following him since playing for the Blackburn youth team which trounced United.

During the u21 championships he was england's best player, even better than smalling. He gives the impression that he is much older than 20....perhaps he have a nigerian birth certificate :)

No he wasn't. Smalling was the more impressive IMO.

Cleverley will get all the headlines from today but I thought this kid was just as good. Smalling-Jones partnership for the future is frightening.

Agreed. Very little between the two of them, though. The ridiculous thing was that they were probably two of England's best attacking players as well.

Along with Walker. Says a lot about the England U21's.

Says more about Pearce, himself. I may enjoy watching England in a few years given yesterday's display and some of the players that we'll see breaking into the England first team soon, but only if we have someone who isn't a complete spastic guiding them.

Paddy Crerand and some old red who used to watch United in the 50's said he reminds them of Big Duncan Edwards. Albeit with the pre-note that some united fans might find this blasphemous.

You can see the drive, grit and leadership qualities that would be reminiscent, as well as the ability to bring the ball out from the back and bulldoze past players...but to compare him to an all-time great so early seems a bit much, it didn't turn out so well with Berbatov-Cantona!

Anyone else find it a little insane that he is rated highly than Smalling?
Was just reading the DailyMail online version where they asked many of their experts that who will be this years Wilshere, mostly all of them said Jones.

It might just be the leadership qualities, like people see in Terry. Agree that Smalling is the better player at the moment, but then he is more than 2 years older.

Jones is younger. But I agree that Smalling is getting overlooked a little. He had a great season last season at CB and everytime I have seen him play RB he has made it look easy.

When I saw Phil Jones in the Community Shield, it was like having Batista in a United shirt. Looks like a beast, I think he's gona be a United legend for many many years to come. That's our CB (British )pairing for the next decade settled then.

Smalling-Jones defensive axis to follow in the lines of:

(1) Bruce-Pallister (1990-1996)
(2) Stam- Berg/Johnsen (1998-2002)
(3) Ferdinand-Vidic (2006-2011)

They all seem to be in 5-7 year cycles.

I didn't knew that he was almost 2 years younger than Smalling. That's a surprise, however I would still say that Smalling is being overlooked, he's probably England's best young talent right now with Wilshere.

The core of Fergie's teams in general tend to be in 5-7 year cycles.

We have been blessed with some amazing defenders in the SAF era. He clearly knows his sort of defender doesn't he.

I am not so convinced that Jones will definately be used in defence all his career. I do see him as a Roy Keane figure in midfield as he has the ability to play there, he has the touch and footballing brain to do it.

Where ever he does play, he will be a real asset, and the money we paid for him will be a bargain! British talent from another PL team usually costs about £10m more than we paid (Rooney, Rio) - but then we got him earlier than those too, both had already had good international tournaments and seasons in the PL. If we had got Jones 12-18 months later he would have come at £10m more no doubt

Still possible to have a similar style.

Heres one for you's. Did you know both players are/were only 5ft 11?

I've wondered if that his reported height might be outdated? Maybe that was a couple of years ago or something? Because he doesn't look 5'11, more like 6'1.

I know he didn't play a lot today, but can this man do anything wrong? He's had a fantastic start at the club and now with Rio and Vidic out will play 90 mins for a few weeks at least.

I can see him give Rio/Vidic a real battle this year.

He's like an inoffensive John Terry (circa 2005) already. And he's, what, 5th choice CB? Arsenal fans must fecking hate us.

Barely noticed him when he came on. For a defender, that is a good thing. Evans likewise. The future is bright.
