Phil Jones

I was shocked to see Jones's height and weight. He looks pretty big on the football field but he isn't that big really.

Going to be a bit contraversial this (I know I can't spell so feck off),

I love his mazey runs into the box, but wouldn't he be better passing the ball before he gets to the byline, I kind of get the impression that if there was another 100 yards of field behind the goal, he'd just keep on running with his teams mate shouting 'come back Jonesy, come back'. If he could pic a pass into the box before he runs out of pitch, ot would be perfect...

Composure comes with experience.

Aye he's under 6 foot isn't he?

I have seen the height quoted as 5'11" to 6'1". Its the weight that surprises me. Players like Jones and Vidic look fairly well built but in reality they are fairly fairly lite.

Why what does he weigh? Looks like a solid 13 stone or so.

Vidic is just over 13 stone, Jones is listed at under 11.5 stone.

I was fairly healthy working out and playing squash 4+ hours a day in my late teens. I was a similar weight and height to Vidic and always though I was pretty skinny.

13 stone is not skinny. Especially with them lads because it will be all muscle.

I'm surprised at 11.5 stone though. I don't think that's right because that is pretty skinny.

Like I said I was the exact same stats as Vidic at around 19, and I was skinny. I had plenty of muscle but my build was pretty slight with clothes on.

You were probably using some arty farty stones you'd find in Florida, not the size they are in fecking Serbia ;)

RB seems to be a good compromise at this point, allows him to make some runs, many have said that in the modern game it's the fullbacks that have the most space on the field to work with.

But he'll spend more time defending, and if he does make a mistake there will usually be a chance for someone else to make up for it, unlike CB.

Most speculation on players in different positions is pretty pointless, but then there were many on the caf that saw Rooney being best 'in the hole' and that turned to be a pretty reasonable opinion.

I think Jones could certainly have a future in Midfield. He could be equally as valuable being the defensive general at CB in the years to come. At the end of the day he is a great prospect, and he is ours....where he finally plays is a good problem to have.

For someone as tall as Vidic it's pretty skinny.

Footballers are skinny though. It suits their sport. The more muscle you carry round, the more oxygen you need to supply it. Pointless for footballers to get bulked up any more than is absolutely necessary. There's no need for them to carry the same kind of muscle that, for example, rugby players would.

I watched some boxing a fortnight ago at flyweight or something. They were around 8 stone. Now that's skinny.

Incidentally, if him and Smalling are both fit, and Vidic comes back soon.

Who would you pick at RB?

I'd still go Smalling.

Me too.

I do think he's given SAF a big headache. he could be tried in the midfield too imo with ando. wont happen though i think.

Nah not in a 2 man midfield.

Though the more I watch him, the more I warm to the idea of playing in a 3 man midfield, with Ando and Fletcher/Cleverley in front of him. oh and eh, Carrick somewhere there too :)

Jones without doubt for me.

If ando and cleverley can play together, why not jones and ando? am not talking about playing him in a 2 man midfield against city chelsea liverpool etc. but for the other teams, i dont see why it wouldnt work.

i wouldnt play 3 in the middle unless its a real big game. rooney upfront on his own is a waste imo.

I'd pick Evans, Jones, Rio, Vidic, Fabio, Rafael, Evra and Smalling in the same team when they are all fit.

Can you imagine Evans, Smalling, Jones, Rafa, Fabio and Evra attacking the space together from the back while Rio and Vidic defended?

It would confuse the feck out of the opposition.

Smalling, he has been different class there.

Smalling has done really well at right back but he looks like a centre back playing at right back. I'd have both Rafael and Jones ahead of him there.

I reckon Jones may well end up nailing that position down as his own this season.

Awful game from him. Yong n Learning though, it was Rio's performance that I was more disappointed from.

Turns out he is human, then. Shocker tonight from the lad. Young n lernin though.

I think he is much better as a rb atm. Think he will switch back to that position when the other centre backs return.

He will actually gain a lot of experience from today, plenty of video material for the coaches to expose.
