Phil Jones

he got caught ball watching rather than marking his man

not the first defender to make that mistake, and he wont be the last

He does seem to be a bit wasted at centre back doesn't he. I wonder if Fergie still sees that as his long term position?

 Rio Ferdinand made a decent career as a central defender

Rio has always been technically gifted for a centre half but he's always been an obvious defender. Jones is looking like he might wasted in the middle of defence.

Let's face it, we're going to have a positional problem with him ala Big Dunc aren't we?

Not really like Jones he played in midfield when young, use to regular make bursting runs from the back taking people on. I would actually say Jones reminds me very much of Rio at the same sort of age so would not be suprised to see Jones career follow the same path.

Would say Jones is strong physically than Rio ever was in a tussle but I do see a lot of the same stuff.

I don't ever recall Rio being used in midfield as a pro though (apart from 1 disastrous game against Blackburn). As I say, he was always technically gifted but from his days with the first team at West Ham he was an obvious defender.

Jones is miles better running with the ball at his feet than Rio ever was.

There was mention of Jones being similar to what a certain Duncan Edwards (RIP) was... Would love to hear more about this from the oldsters...

It is indeed so exciting to see Jones this good!

Rio played a few times in midfield for West Ham, and also a lot at righ back during his early years in the Premier League for them.

Tom Clare is one of the "oldsters" that made that very comparison.

I don't personally remember any games in midfield.

Ferdinand was originally a midfielder as a youth.

That was mentioned earlier. It's no surprise given his technical ability. Since being a pro though he's been an obvious defender.

Plus, like I mentioned earlier, Jones is already better running with the ball at his feet than Rio ever was.

I'm sure we could look back and find the odd lung bursting run into the penalty box from Rio over the years but Jones has already made it a regular feature of his game for us and set up a few goals already too.

How many assists does he have already? 3? 1 from a cross and 2 from bursting into the box?

2 I think. The one against Chelsea was due to Terry hitting the ball against Nani

Ah you're right. Well maybe 3 official "direct" assists but he's certainly credited with making that goal in my book.

Did you see Rio at West Ham? He evoked memories of Bobby Moore and was known as the Peckham Beckenbauer for a reason... He might have eased off afterwards, but a lot of that was down as much to tactics and his choice of transferring to Leeds rather than United, than age or him 'losing bottle'...

Nah Rooney cost us the game by getting himself injured. Stupid decision in my opinion.

Of course I did.

If it wasn't for De Gea we'd have conceded 3 or 4 yesterday, and lost.

What does that have to do with a specific incident where we conceeded? Jones' marking wasnt the best, De Gea could have come because it was very close to the 6 yard box and Rio was in a position to make up for others mistakes and didnt. All 3 of them have some portion of blame, it doesnt matter one of them should have come through. And in this case none of them did and we condeeded

Jones was caught ball watching. happens even with the best in the business. he's young and learning. dont think de gea could come out with so many bodies in the way all the time during corners. Rio was marking some other guy but did try his best to put crouch off, sadly, a 6'6'' 6 yards from goal is only going to end one way.

i do agree that jones could have marked him better. but mistakes happen. its best we move on rather than get to the base of who we need to blame for the dropped points imo

I think this lad is awsome, but he is still learning,he will get better as the season progresses.
I would like to see him as a holding midfield player once vida and rio are back in at full steam, playing jones right in front of them ,especially against the better teams. That would
be some sight.

Think we're all getting ahead of ourselves in comparisons with this player and that and what his best position is.Rio and Vidic are not going be around for ever.Clearly he was bought as a long term replacement along with Smalling to be the heart of our defence for the future. The marauding runs are a huge bonus but as he matures he'll be an outstanding central defender but this is his first season so let's not expect to much

Agree, it would be interesting.

The thing is, I can't see us leaving this guy on the bench right now. If Rio and Vidic are fit they are an easy choice. We also have options at right back. I'd love to see him play in midfield if we have the option. To be fair, we've already lacked at times this season a player of his kind in the middle. Both in terms of covering opposition players and driving us forward.

The only question that can be asked of Rio for their goal is why was he marking Woodgate and not Crouch and even that question is probably more suited to the boss.

rio carrying an injury? did you see him try and head it late he barely got off the ground.

Going to be a bit contraversial this (I know I can't spell so feck off),

I love his mazey runs into the box, but wouldn't he be better passing the ball before he gets to the byline, I kind of get the impression that if there was another 100 yards of field behind the goal, he'd just keep on running with his teams mate shouting 'come back Jonesy, come back'. If he could pic a pass into the box before he runs out of pitch, ot would be perfect...
