Dont see what the big deal is myself.
Same here, what's the big fuss? There are other products that have been around for a while. I don't think it warrants to be in current events either.

No offence, but can i ask what happens if a muslim prays to allah in the wrong direction?

technically he becomes a protestant which of course means eternal banishment to hell.

.

I know some people who are Muslim and they are my best friends. But I always tell them that Mecca is in east, west, north, or south, depending on where in the world you are. You are always facing Mecca and also have your back turned to Mecca because the world is round. What I mean is , if you are facing Mecca then you have also got your back to Mecca because the World is round, obviously Mohammed or whoever wrote this verse was not a believer in a round Earth.

No big deal, we have managed without for 1500 years.

Qibla (direction) is, in general, the direction of Mecca, more specifically the Kaa'ba, towards which each Muslim turn in order to perform salaat . In a mosque the qibla is marked. During a journey, a compass may be used to ascertain the correct qibla; in case of necessity the individual may use his own judgment where no instruments are available.

To be fair, you haven't answered his question, which was what happens if you pray in the wrong direction?

It's a matter of faith. What's wrong with religious rituals? Why do catholics cross themselves like they do?

"The Qibla is the direction a Muslim faces while praying. This Qibla is not a set direction but changes from country to country. The Qibla indicates the direction of Mecca as all Muslims pray facing towards the Kabah in Mecca. Though it is important to face the direction of the Kabah during prayer it is not essential if someone does not have the means to find out which direction the Qibla is in. For instance, someone who is travelling and wishes to pray at a train station but who does not know which direction to pray in, will simply pray in the direction he thinks is right."

Seems like nothing happens. Some believe that the prayers get lost or misdirected if not facing Mecca, others didpute this as God/Allah/Mohammed is everywhere.

I'm surprised at you Slabbs, but you had a big night last night :D

Doesn't the bold text above imply that:
- One could use his judgment which could result in praying in the wrong direction.
- It is permissible therefore nothing happens against the individual.

What wisdom.. :wenger:
If you're in Turkey and turn towards Mecca, you're turning in the general direction of Mecca. Your back is turned towards Ukraine, and then towards space, since the Earth is round.

Besides, Muslims knew that the Earth is round when Christians were burning people on the stake for saying otherwise.

When I wrote "one may use his own judgement in case he has no instrument", this was meant to mean there is no problem in facing the wrong direction by mistake...the prayers are valid, sorry for the confusion.

But what if you deliberately pray in the wrong direction just to piss off Allah?

Slabbs wa gowan..

1. You do yourself a favour by praying not Him. The way one prays has benefits both medically and spiritually.
2. If you want to pray then why would you do it wrongly, it defies logic.
3. If your aim or intention is to 'piss off' Allah then he already knows about it so save yourself the trouble and wait for the grave. Then, you'll see who gets pissed off.
4. The concept of Mens Rea and Actus Rea exits in Islam. Actions are judged upon their relative intentions for example, one is praying a lot in front of people to gain popularity.

This could start up whole new businesses... Phones4Jew, The Catholink, etc.

Read St Augustine...he sorts that one out with some class philosophical speculations about free will and determinism

Deluded, yes, but good stuff

And he became a saint despite boning whores all the time, which is good going

It was getting to be a fun thread, your question might just change the direction of the thread, but here goes...the question of fate and free will is one of the most intriguing topics in religion.

Man feels absolutely powerless, regarding many of the circumstances in which he/she finds him/herself. Indeed the question of predestination and free will has haunted Man for so long; but it has been adequately dealt with in the Holy Quran.

From the Quranic point of view, Man is not completely a master of his fate; nor is he a puppet subject to the hazards of destiny. It is true that God’s sovereignty is all powerful and nothing falls outside its knowledge. This means that God knows everything and it is according to His will, things happen here. The universe is completely subject to the overriding power of God, and nothing happens without God willing it to be so.

From an Islamic point of view, Man is free for all practical purposes. He has no excuse for making the wrong choice and then blaming fate, any more than a man punching his fist into a wall can blame the laws of nature. He knew the consequences of his actions for all practical purposes and he shouldn't expect a miracle.

Its a great and intriguing subject, would be a great thread topic.
