Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

And stop calling me wrong, I was basically bang on with the Wii U, if anything I expected more from it.

You just repeated what was being said elsewhere! Before it came out, you never once mentioned the CPU being such a bottleneck.

Besides, I don't normally care whether you are right or wrong because you are always informative in some way. However, when you start talking "people like Lambs" in a derisive way, that gets my back up and makes me want to point out how much shit you talk.

So unless you want to apologise for that dig, shall we get back to the PS4 and discuss how it looks a lot like Sony admitted defeat and pushing on with shear power to try to triumph, and how that affects your love of it?

Apologise?

 I was aiming for wounded sheep to have a good old barny, but you aren't playing! :smirk:

But yeah, in all seriousness, it's gotta grind a little that they've realised they have to basically make an Xbox with a cell in it (presumably because they've got millions lying around!) this time around? I mean, they are basically doing what M$ did with the first Xbox, try to force through POWEEEEEERRRRRRR!

The controller sounds interesting, I can't see them moving too far away from that design now, thankfully.

That's a big PC.

Dev kits are always spec'd up, especially in terms of memory! It's to account for the endless changes they make whilst the machine is in development and allow devs to prototype quicker.

We can glean what we basically already know from that. The headphone jack bit made me laugh though

This is the strangest thread on Redcafe... So, bendy screens?

Virtual reality is where it's at. Sony will be long gone by then.

Bendy screens.

Do we actually know anything for sure about the PS4? Read the last couple of pages and it all seems like speculation on Weaste's part.

I rarely game these days anyway in all fairness, I'll pick this up purely for whatever Metal Gear they release on it.

Dickleburgh!

I googled that and apparently it's a village in Suffolk. What that makes me I'm not too sure.

Watching Lambs and Weaste argue over speculation of specs is actually worse than them arguing over confirmed specs.

But its entertaining all the same.

We are arguing over Weaste's usual interpretation of rumoured specs meaning that PS4 is going to take over the world!

But where have we heard this before I wonder? Oh yeah! Back when the PS3 was going to take over the world!

He never learns...he certainly never wins these arguments.

Do we actually know anything for sure about the PS4?

I know what it is, I think (essentially they are trying to shoehorn the Cell into an highly clocked AMD APU - could end up as a SoC with high bandwidth to two pools of memory). Kotaku are just going on the approximation box. You can't interface Cell with an x86 CPU, you need final silicon. It's just a big PC.

IBM's roadrunner super computer used AMD CPUs with Cells as accelerators.

So basically, it's a mid-high level PC, just like the 720 will be. So, just like the PS3/360, it'll be impressive but slightly behind the curve again.

fecking hell it's hard work getting you to the obvious conclusion I've been saying all along!

I can't wait for actual specs for both machines, so you can start educating us on how much it'll piss over the 720 and run the world! Actually, I probably can... ;)

Will it be as expensive as the PS3 initially was? I don't intend on paying £425 for a console ever again.

How exactly are the upgraded specs going to change the games?

Slightly better graphics? Faster loading times?

I doubt it's anything that's going to be worth forking out the likely £400 cost if you've already got a PS3.

This generations of games have been below par for me. Too much focus on multiplayer gaming and not enough focus on an in depth story or challenging gameplay.

It blows the PS3 out of the pooper. Essentially they've replaced a 2005 GPU with an up to date one with 8x the badwidth to the VRAM.

I think he's asking more about what he'll actually see Weaste, not theoretical numbers.

The short answer, is the best change will be even more detailed textures and much, much better lighting. Coupled with smooth framerates. Now this won't mean a great deal to most people, and it won't look particularly different on your eyes, but couple with even more detailed models and you should still be fairly impressed.

Whether it's a huge noticeable leap worth the money, then I'm not sure. Bare in mind top PC's of today are more powerful, so some tech demos will show insight if you are that bothered about looking.

Then you are going to hate the next one.

As I said earlier Lambs I'm really not a huge gamer anymore, few games grip me like they used to and I can give or take them now. I still find myself playing through older games more than new ones. I've no doubt there's good games out there but at £40 a time it's an expensive do.

This year for example it'll be the same games just rehashed, COD, FIFA, Pro Evo, Battlefield etc. No originality anymore.

Whatever happened to that game you were working on? Taken a backseat?

Yep, cheers.

See that's all well and good, but graphics aren't the be all and end all, this is one of the problems with games these days. I agree with Elvis, there's too much focus on things that don't really make the games any better. COD MW3493 will just have better graphics, new guns and a few new MP maps, but it'll cost you £45 again.

Some of the best games I've played have crappy graphics, like the best GTA games, Vice City graphics are shit but the game is awesome. Driving hardware forward is obviously going to be required but it's not the fundamental issue for me.

That said, GT6 will probably look fecking amazing!

The framerate changes is the big key for me if they can get games running at around 60 fps in 1080 I'll be happy.

They are, for the most part, shit and aimed at people who can't play games properly. The next generation will be even worse.

What, the caftards one? It was nearly finished, just needed level building, but something big came up and I disappeared from here for a while. Now it's not relevant to the current caf, it was more there and then thing which is a shame because of the work that went into it, but it's not relevant now.

I might still do something in the future, because I have a few things the guys on here would like to play in tournaments and stuff, but I'm more likely to do a couple of android titles first. I've plenty of ideas I designed for the AGB that would translate well and be worth playing, so maybe I'll be back this year :)

Ah yes that was the one! A shame indeed, was looking forward to it. Good luck with your other stuff, keep me informed.

Yep, cheers.

You are preaching to the choir. The PS3 especially was the one where things like A.I and Physics could really move on, but they didn't, they'll stalled at best and at worst gone backwards.

Why? Because the games churned out these days are about flashy images and simplicity. And that's how they'll stay.

Those games weren't so crappy looking for the time though.

Not if you believe Weaste's shit about GT5. Apparently, the models don't need to be updated!

Weaste and I always agree on this point. However, we won't get everything running at 60fps even on these new consoles, why? Because graphics sell and frankly some games don't need 60fps anyway.

Hopefully slowdown on the Sony machine will be a thing of the past though, and they'll be viable options in the cross-platform dilemma :)

Because new hardware allows you do do things that could not be done before. I made the comparison earlier in the thread, you can't do Mario Galaxy on an N64.
