Pochettino, potential great manager or one season wonder?

Hes impressed for more than 1 season already

too early to say obviously. But if I had to say now I'd lean towards potential great.

Perhaps neither and just a good manager.

He needs to start winning trophies now.

He'll have to win something before he can be called anything more than a good manager. There's been plenty over the years who get teams playing good football but never actually win anything and fade away.

He still has a lot to prove. He's one of the promising upcoming managers. Let him progress and see if he can deliver with consistency.

He won't be fading away, he may do so in time from the PL but he is so highly thought of in Spain that a lot of the La Liga clubs would have him in a heartbeat.

It's also possible to be a great manager without winning trophys as football is a very uneven playing field.

To take Spurs from perennial laughing stock to runners up is an achievement in itself. Still, it's been easier this year than any other. For me, the jury is still out. He needs a trophy really. Will be interesting to see how Spurs handle the upcoming window.

He had the best team in the weakest premier league in decades and still failed to win it. Still has a lot to prove for me.

The next big manager I think, we'll see how he does trophy wise but I dont think he's too far away, had them in the League cup final his frist season at Spurs and had them contending for a first title since the early 60's in his 2nd. Changed the atmosphere and expectation at that club.

You generally come away impressed after watching his teams.. quality manager I think, hope i'm wrong.

They were 150/1 to win the title at the start of the season to be fair.

Has a great style of play, but needs to back it up with success and resilience when the pressure is on. They've played the best football in the league overall this season, but there is a bit of a concern how Spurs bottled it in the last few games. They blew it against West Brom and then went full meltdown in the Chelsea game. Hard to judge him, or anyone, from this season. It was a freak of a season and I predict it will be an anomaly in the bigger picture. He has impressed greatly prior to this season though, so he has it all to prove now.

This. Billic and Koeman are 8 and 10 points away from Spurs and I'd put them in the same bracket as Pochetinno. Right now he still has a lot to prove before he can be considered a potential great

West Ham
14/15 12th 47 Points - Big Sam
15/16 6th 62 points - Billic

Southampton
13/14 8th 56 points - Pochettino
Koeman comes in while losing Shaw, Lallana, Lambert, Lovren, Jay Rodriguez (misses the season with injury, he scored like 15+ PL goals the year before I think), Chambers.
14/15 7th 60 points (Net Spend -£25m)
Loses Schneiderlin, Clyne
15/16 7th 60 points (Net Spend £2m)

Spurs
12/13 4th 72 points AVB
13/14 6th 69 points Tim Sherwood
14/15 5th 64 points Poch
15/16 2nd 70 points Poch

Built a nice team at Southampton too, which had a strong core of English players. Now doing the same at Spurs. Think he's potentially a great manager.

Did he have the best players?

I think he had the best team. Spurs this year was a quality outfit of players who worked well together and stayed relatively healthy for the season. This was the season to win it because the bigger boys will be back next year.

The great managers have won trophies with smaller clubs by taking advantage of seasons like this one. I think failing to win it this year puts a big question mark next to Pochettino's credentials as a winner.

I understand that you think he had the best team, my question is did he have the best group of players?

I'm a big fan of Poch, but I honestly think the likes of Billic and Koeman would have been just as successful with that Spurs side in this freak season. Needs a few more years to not be categorised with the many flash in the pan type managers that have preceded him.

In terms of first 11 I would probably say yes. There isn't much between Spurs and Chelsea in terms of the starting outfit.

When you look at the entire squad, they might have been a bit short on some other side's but not by much.

Great managers win league and CL titles, he can't realistically do that at Tottenham, so he'll need to move to a bigger club in order to have a chance of achieving those things.

Fair enough, I would say Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City are arguably stronger player wise, if not then it's very close.

So to produce a better team than all of them hasn't been bad going.

But it's not even about this season in isolation, he's building and I think he knows where he's going with this team. His press conference yesterday was very interesting.

I keep hearing that all the so called big boys will be back, we'll just have to wait and see on that one, like we'll just have to wait and see on Poch.

You don't think Chelsea and City will be stronger next year than they were this?

Arsenal will be exactly the same as they always are but United will hopefully progress under a new manager, although it may take another year or so to actually compete.

Liverpool look resurgent under Klopp and a transfer window under his belt could work wonders, while sides like West Ham have cash to burn and will be ambitious. Who knows what's going to happen with Leicester!

This was the year for the next big thing in management to make his mark. If he does it with Spurs next season I'll be seriously impressed.

I don't care about City, Chelsea, Utd or anybody else, I don't care at all who anybody does or doesn't sign this Summer (only Messi would peak my interest), or what managerial changes there are. I only care about what Spurs do.

A similar points total next year will see us in and around the top 4 which will be a success and if we can get up nearer 80 who knows where that will take us.

I believe we will be better next season than this, if we are then we will be in the mix.

I believe in our manager and given the choice I wouldn't swap him for any other manager in the game. He's absolutely the right man for our club.

I'd say he has no hunger and not enough of drive, he could have sewn the runner up weeks ago but spurs could end up 3rd.

His last few games forms were horrible

To be fair they have a few players serving suspension. Should be more though. Looks like the players have completely lost their head since the Chelsea game.

They'd be disappointed not to finish ahead of Arsenal after having a big advantage just a month ago.

They don't come up with top teams though, their last 5 games form is abysmal, they never pressured leicester, it's always a 5 point gaps.

Best manager in the league IMO.

But the way he wants his teams to play cannot be done in a season, especially in the PL. They will tire out.

This remind me of the "Harry Kane, one season wonder" statement made across Redcafe this season. Nevertheless, Pochettino has impressed for more than one season already. After coming so close to winning the league, the squad is demoralized at the moment and they are already thinking about forgetting this season and going onto the next.

There's still so many to play for though, the difference between 2nd and 3rd is huge, you can still get into the history book as Runner up if you finish 2nd, not much but it's an achievement worthy of some weeks of extra work

Billic and Koeman are 5 and 7 points away from Spurs as it stands

Yea, their is many to play for if Spurs want to win the on top of Arsenal league, but at the moment, I feel when they saw the main prize out of the reach, they stopped trying as hard as they did. Even the history book consolation is marginal compared to the loss of the main prize. The reaction of Spurs player during the Chelsea game showed how much they lost and how demoralized they were.

It doesn't mean much for United/Arsenal/Chelsea/City to lose out on 2nd, but for a team that never finish top 4 actually finishing 2nd is as big as a trophy worth the extra passion and hunger

He's good. Not shite, nor amazing - just a good manager.

I agree but, Spurs players looks like they do not believe that as their performance has dropped of after they drew to Chelsea.
