Portuguese Football 2017/2018

Terrible match but 3 more points. Bruno Fernandes does it again, it's unbelievable. I've never seen a player score so many screamers in such a small amount of games.

What a great match to see at the stadium. It wasn't the best of performances but what amazing goals by the usual Bruno Fernandes and Mathieu "Cruz". Worth the ticket/gamebox. Cristiano Ronaldo at the stadium. I didn't see him but heard the chants and the speaker. It's 6 games and 6 wins. I'll certainly take that. On to Moreira de Cónegos (don't care about the League Cup).

I told you Bruno Fernandes would be the best transfer of this season. It was a player I really fancied when watching him play by the NT and at Serie A.
Very classy player, great vision, but he really needs confidence to deliver. It is a luxury player and imho it will only fit some specific tactical environments. It would be a bad pick for Man Utd, for example.

Round 6 Results this weekend
Braga 2 - 1 Guimarães:
Quite an even game, but Braga got a bit of edge. Guimarães goal was a terrible mistake by Braga keeper. Terrible football by both teams, tbh. Can't really point a player for MOTM.

Rio Ave 1 - 2 FC Porto
Another tricky result. The game was quite balanced and Porto got lucky to get the result. But what amazes me is: not even a single pundit would guess that Marega would become such an important player so far, this season.

Belenenses 2 - 1 Estoril
A very even game where both teams deserved to win. They offered some entretaining football, both teams had good chances and tried to win the match. Domingos risked a bit and took off a defender for Caeiro to get in, and it solved the game. Caeiro made a great second half, holding the ball and linking up.

Sporting 2 - 0 Tondela
NOt the best match by Sporting, but still got the three points. Tondela actually defended quite well and caused Sporting some problems. Hard to pick a player for MOTM also.

Boavista 2 - 1 Benfica
Far from being the worst match by Benfica, mainly because the first part was very decent, where Benfica created enough chances to solve the match. At second half, Benfica failed to keep pressing Boavista and eventually let them play their direct style, even though they lost by a terrible mistake by Varela. Renato Santos from Boavista was really the key here: he battled, he created problems by himself to Benfica defence and made boavista believe in the recovery.

Marítimo 2 - 1 Aves
Not a fair result. Aves played better, got better chances, but failed to convert. I feel the pain about the field grass, it's really in a terrible shape but bare in mind that Madeira's weather is a nightmare for pitch technicians.

Paços de Ferreira 1 - 0 Setúbal
Another unfair result. Setúbal played better on both halves, but Paços just got the luck on their side. Pedrinho made a very good match, and he will be once again a key player in this season for Paços, as pointed in my team analysis (cocky me :D )

Two games left:
Portimonense - Feirense:

I think it will be entretaining to watch. Portimonense likes to attack, Feirense likes to play the counter.

Chaves - Moreirense:
Two teams who basically have a all new starting eleven this season, it will be a painful game, almost for sure :D

Last results of Roung 6
Chaves 3 - 0 Moreirense
It was a more balanced game than the result made it look. Both teams have gelling problems, but Chaves looked more solid defensively. Davidson made the difference, he really added flair to Chaves team.

Portimonense 2 - 1 Feirense
Vital game for Portimonense and they delivered. It was quite a one sided game, Portimonense could have won with a more confortable result. Nakajima clearly saved the day with two vital goals.

Standings after Round 6

Good result for my team Portimonense, think their home form will determine if they stay up or not.
Back over in October and was hoping to catch a game but their fixture list shows 3 week break?
Is the international break that long in Portugal?
Looks like I'll have to make do with Utd v Benfica in Lisbon on the 18th. :D

Thanks mate. I like to keep it minimalist so it can be a quick read and keep non-portuguese folks informed about what's happening here and there.
By the way, I think your club will win it easy this year, unless the dressing room turns into a meltdown. If things continue as they are, you even have good chances to dream about Champions League final.

Portimonense plays good football, but they fail to convert most of their chances. They deserve a much better standing, to be honest.
Yes, international break is coming, the last home game before that will be vs Aves at 30/09. Vital game for both teams.

About Benfica - Utd game, buy your tickets now, because I fear it will be sold out.

The league will be an easy task for PSG.

I'm not concerned about the Cavani/Neymar story: the penalties should be shared IMO

Games against Bayern will tell us whether the club can go far away.

I was very impressed with Nakajima. He's quick, technical and with good vision. But his great asset is his boldness, unlike many similar Japanese players, who are otherwise excellent technically, lack the fearlessness to face 1v1 constantly and unlock dangerous situations.

Thanks I was just querying why it was 3 weeks and not 2 weeks as their next game after Aves isn't until 23rd Oct and I'm over
at my place the weekend before.

Don't worry I'm a season ticket holder at Utd and will get my ticket in the Utd end (ballot today}. I'll be driving up from Algarve on day
of the game and staying over in Lisbon after the game.

Yes he was a last minute loan from Tokyo I think, along with Rosell from Sporting. Will be interesting to see how his loan pans out.

Quite difficult for me to watch all of their games live living in the UK, so try and catch them live when over in Portimao.

They really look to have a good scouting or better said good relations with agents, Lumor, Paulinho or Nakajima look decent for their level.

Main problem for them is that they don't have good conditions to develop youth players, like a lot of clubs in Portugal. Anyway, you just have to be relaxed, looking at the way they have been playing they will be safe from relegation imo.

Porto 3 - 1 Portimonense half-time result.

Watch if you are looking for an entertained match.

Player to watch: Ikari Shinji.

The self sabotage of always starting Alan Ruiz finally worked!

We will never win anything with Jorge Jesus. He's a fraud. He only won at Benfica for obvious reasons.

The only thing that makes me think we have a chance of winning the title this season is that I don't think neither Benfica or Porto are good enough to run away with it. We'd still need Bas Dost to be back to form, Jesus to stop playing Alan Ruiz and Coentrão to go the full season without major injuries to have a proper chance at winning it imo.

Anyways, Barcelona and Porto at Alvalade before the international break is going to be a fun week. Hopefully those games can make me forget about today :D

First mistake with all the respect, in the first place they are the teams who have won much more than us last years, not us.

Then we finished last season in third place, we were the team who needed to invest more to compete at the same level as them.

Porto has almost the same team of last season, only replacing Andre Silva for Aboubakar and adding Ricardo Pereira or Marega, probably short for the Champions League, but enough to win in Portugal.

Last thing is Conceição, I think he is somewhat underrated in Portugal, not saying he is like Jardim or Fonseca, but for me he has improved what NES did.

Don't get me wrong, it is nothing against your opinion, but sometimes I feel a lot of our fans live in a fantasy bubble where they somewhat feel we are entitled to win this season because we are way better than Benfica or Porto.

Reality is we aren't unfortunately.

Agree with you on this 1, only thing I would add is that unfortunately we don't have nobody to replace Gelson, unfortunately we made a mistake with Yuri, we loaned him for too much time and he spent almost 3 years loaned to clubs who battle for relegation, he is mentaly weak for someone who has to play in a team who has to win titles.

This just reinforces my opinion regarding players who come from the academy, those who are talented at 18 should be imediatelly pushed to the B team then spend 1 or maximum 2 years and pushed up to the first team, like they did with Gelson and they didn't with Yuri.

Finally, looking at yesterday Bruno Fernandes has to play in Alan Ruiz position away from home, and in matches against weaker teams at home Doumbia should play alongside Dost.

Regarding Bruno Cesar at the end of the season he needs to go, if Acuna stays the other option to rotate should be Rafael Barbosa from the B team, less expensive and probably the same efect as César.

I personally was against replacing JJ at the end of last season, but even if he wins anything this season imo we should try to replace him with Paulo Fonseca from Shaktar, he has the same ideas as JJ but is more flexible, more adjusted to international competitions and better at human relations with his players.

Bruno Carvalho needs to do everything possible to bring him back to Portugal before other clubs from top 5 leagues will hire him, its just my opinion, but JJ more 1 season no, we need someone with good ideas yes, but not so rigid regarding concepts of players, tactics and all that.

Lets see how we react this week against Barcelona and Porto.

I can't wait for the big game next week. I've been impressed with Ricardo Pereira since his return from Nice. I like him a lot as an option.

In terms of stronger squad, I think Porto is ahead from both Sporting and Benfica. Not only they kept their squad, they added value with Ricardo Pereira.
No to mention that Aboubakar and even Marega are delivering! It becomes harder to compete when the opposition makes average players to look good.

Round 7 Results this weekend
Aves 0 - 0 Rio Ave:
A terrible first half from both teams, but a quite decent second half, mainly by Aves, who deserved to get more than just one point. But Aves only took more risks in the last 10 minutes, which imho was too late, since Rio Ave was already in shut up shop mode.

Tondela 1 - 2 Braga
Braga won the match, taking advantadge of Tondela being down to 10 men since the 8th minute. But to be honest, Tondela worked well with 10 men and they even had good chances to draw the match. A very decent game by Hassan, who made a goal and created real troubles to Tondela defence.

Feirense 1 - 4 Belenenses
There is no discussion here. Belenenses dominated the whole match, period. Domingos is recovering his career, step by step. André Sousa was clearly MOTM, he attacked, defended, created and scored twice. Maurides also made a very interesting game.

Guimarães 2 - 1 Marítimo
Fair victory for Gumarães, who could had solved the game earlier. Pedro Martins put faith on Heldon for the starting 11, and it paid off. Heldon made a great game, driving the ball forward, scoring and assisting.

Benfica 2 - 0 Paços de Ferreira
A decent match by Benfica, but the first half was quite bellow average. Paços barely created troubles, but the team was not well connected. Ruben Dias is growing every match. Let's see if he does a good season, we are needing center backs at our NT. The veteran forward Jonas keeps doing great games and he's the main threat from Benfica.

Moreirense 1 - 1 Sporting
Terrible match by Sporting, who could even had lost this game. Poor exibition, the team failed to control the miedfield and failed to find space in the last third.
Gelson Martins really needs to improve his decision making. He was by far Sporting most dangerous player, but his decisions were baffling.

Estoril 0 - 2 Chaves
This game will probably be the last margin error for Estoril manager. If they fail to get points on next match, there will be another sacking. Chaves played better, got the control of the middle and Pedro Emanuel couldn't counter that.
Pedro Tiba (who I noted that would be a key player for Chaves) continues to deliver. he was all over the place, defending attacking and providing service. Two assists, good runs and dribles, he was the main responsable for breaking Estoril defense.

Porto 5-2 Portimonense:
Easy game for Porto, who is clearly the manager's image: a team that likes to attack and take risks. Aboubakar and Marega created tons of troubles for Portimonense, not to mention that Corona incursions completely disjointed their midfield.
Quite a surprise how two outcasts suddenly are part of Porto's good form. We are talking about Marega, a one dimensional forward who is basically pace and power.

One game left:

Setúbal - Boavista:
Easy game for Setúbal if they can score at the first half. If they fail to do it, Boavista is a very rigid team that will barely take risks. If Setúbal manage to shut Renato Santos, they will control them.

Round 7 Last Game & Standings
Setúbal 1 - 1 Boavista
Setúbal had a very important match here. They were facing an "easy" team, playing home and they were on a good form, playing well in the last three games. Unfortunatelly, that wasn't enough (and they made me loose money!!! ).
You know the cliché "It was game of two halves."? Fits this match perfectly. Setúbal made a very solid first half missing a lot of clear cut chances, but Boavista reacted well in the second and the goal came naturally.
As I said in the match preview, Setúbal should had shut Renato Santos to starve Boavista from their direct game. The problem was worst, since Setúbal left winger failed to track Boavista right back for several times which resulted in the goal.

Nobody watching Sporting V Porto?

Rui Patricio has been magnificent.

Well that was shit

And you are being mild. If anyone deserved the win, it was Porto. I got to admit that in the end i was rooting for the draw. The team physically is extremely tired. I hope they can recover in the international break. It was very negative but at least we are just 2 points behind, still unbeaten and with 3 points in the CL. I hope we can turn this around.

It's not a disaster but things aren't looking good at all. Our attack is crap and Bas Dost is half the player he was last year. I have no idea how we didn't concede a goal in that first half too, thank God for Patricio.

Not only the team looked tired, imo we have 2 problems, 1 that you mentioned with Dost, knowing we only have Doumbia as alternative, maybe Dala could play more, the other 1 is Battaglia at his best his worse than Adrien imo.

Where we are better comparing with last season is related to the defensive line, anyway, Porto was better on the first half, on the second hald it was balanced, they will also have problems, needing to keep Aboubakar, Brahimi or Marega away from injuries, they don't have enough quality to replace them.

The only positive today was that we didn't suffered thanks to Patricio, the other was that we were the first team to stop Porto winning.

Oh and of course Benfica not winning also good for us, we need to be positive, but regardless what happens at the end of the season BC needs to start thinking about JJ replacement, the team looks stagnated on offensive terms, Dost is far away from last season, and JJ is too old to change, time to bring back Paulo Fonseca to Portugal.

Terrible season so far fot Benfica.
Where we had Ederson, Lindelof and Semedo, now we have a grandpa Julio Cesar, an uninspired Jardel and a André Almeida.
Last year Lindelof cleaned a lot of mistakes caused by the dinossaur Luisao, but this year, with Jardel out of form, his weaknesses are really exposed.
We sold our only true "tradicional" striker, who offered a lot to our game, especially when pairing with Jonas.

But the truth is that even last year, having in my opinion the best team in the league, the games were solved by individual moves.
The lack of tactical knowledge of Rui Vitoria is being exposed day by day, and it's a matter of time until being sacked.

I'm just hoping Sporting and Porto to lose points, cause otherwise we can't do the 5th championship in a row.
If Sporting isn't first by february/march and is still on Europa League, they probably won't with the championship, cause Jorge Jesus team ofte get tired by the end of the seasons.

This year, for the people that don't use to watch the portugueses league, it may be intersting to watch some games, cause it seems that the championship is going to be competitive.

The squad is better than the results. Off course it is weaker than last year, we are not strong enough to win the tile but we are still good enough to offer some challenge.

The problem is that we hired players we didn't need and didn't got players for our exits.

Round 8 results and standings
Belenenses 1 - 0 Guimarães
A good first half from Belenenses, but they were lucky to get a result here. They were massacred in the second half and got lucky not to loose the game, to be honest.
André Sousa from Belenenses made a very good game. Attacked well, defended well and worked a lot through the game. He had to be replaced 20 minutes from the end because he totally had ran his socks off.

Marítimo 1 - 1 Benfica
Fair result, but Marítimo could had got a victory here. They had a very shaky first half, but they made a very good pressing all over the field and if they had a better finisher, they would had won the match.
Daniel Ramos is doing a very interesting job here with a much weaker team than last year.

Sporting 0 - 0 FC Porto
All said by SCP fans here. Poor game by Sporting, who basically spent the game trying not to loose this match rather than trying to win it.

Braga 6 - 0 Estoril
Strange match. Before the 2-0, it was quite an even match. After the 2 - 0 it was a one way game. Bruno Xadas made a feckingtastic match. His numbers in this match are out of this world.

Rio Ave 2 - 1 Setúbal
Fair result. Rio Ave were clearly the best team of the match. Francisco Geraldes made a very good match.

Boavista 1 - 0 Feirense
An ugly match, but fai result. Boavista were more objective and it made the diffeerence. Renato Santos is doing another great season, I dont think he will stay much longer.

Paços de Ferreira 3 - 2 Moreirense
Unfair result for Moreirense. They played better, they had the better chances, but their defensive line is really subpar. António Xavier made the difference between both teams. his creativity was the key for Paços in this match.

Portimonense 2 - 2 Aves
Once again, Portimonense playing well but not delivering. It's getting harder. Amilton from Aves made a monstrous exibition. Defended, ataccked, scored. What more can you ask from an anchor?

Chaves 1 - 1 Tondela
Unfari result. Chaves deserved the victory, but they just keep missing so many easy goals. They really need to boost their defence and attack. Their miedfield is quite decent tbh.
Good game by Bressan and Tiba, but the forwards were just terrible

With so many cup games and NT games, there portuguese league will finally comeback this weekend. Portuguese cup is quite boring.

Good work on keeping the scores and such!
Do you know of some site that has all the videos/gifs of the goals?
It might be interesting to have them (under spoilers of course).

Yep. Thankfully we have CL this week as well, although Sporting and Benfica's prospects facing Juventus and United, don't look good. Porto's job won't be easy either with RB Leipzig.

Sporting has a chance, Juventus is not in a good form. But they have players who can make the difference, though.
Benfica has a better chance than it looks, since they will deploy a deep line agains Man Utd, which with the lack of creativity from Mourtinho teams it can produce a surprising draw.

Porto will face a team who is somewhat inconsistent, but that are unstopable when they are on fire.

The websites I know mainly contain highlights, not goals. You can usually find them at okgoals.com and sogolo.pt

They miss some games, though.
