Portuguese Football 2017/2018

Sorry I didnt offer match previews last week. Didn't had the time due to work stuff. here are the results. Staindings will be tommorrow, still two games to end this round.

Sporting 5 - 1 Chaves
Bas Dost is back. Scored, assisted, made his team believe in going forward. What else can you ask?

Aves 1 - 3 Benfica
A decent game to be honest. Both teams tried to win the game, but Benfica got the edge. Jonas made the difference, not having afraid to pick the ball, distribute the game and be in the right place.

Tondela 2 - 0 Belenenses
Fair result. The better team won, they created more chances and were more objective. Hélder Tavares was the key of this match, made a great game.

FC Porto 6 - 1 Paços de Ferreira
Porto keeps playing very solid and pacey football. Marega and Aboubakar with their pace and power keep bringing misery to the opponent's defenses.

Vitória Setúbal 3 - 1 Marítimo
The cliché "game of two halves" perfectly matches this game. First half Marítimo made a decent one, but Setúbal pressed hard at the second half and it was a fair result at the end. Once again André Sousa was the key!

Feirense 1 - 0 Rio Ave
What a terrible match. i pitty the spectators at the stadium. Neither tema deserved the win to be honest.

Estoril 0 - 3 Boavista
Surprisingly Pedro Emanuel was not sacked yet after such dreadful results! The result is heavy for Estoril, but a team that defends so poorly doesnt deserve any better. Fábio Espinho made a very quality game. He's an experienced player that still has flair on his boots.

Last games of Round 9:

Guimarães 3 - 3 Portimonense
Amazing recovery by Guimarães. how did Portimonense let go a three goal advantadge? But being honest, Guimarães played better overall, they were victims of horrible defending decisions. Hard to pick th MOTM between Nakajima and Raphinha. Both players created so much for their teams.

Moreirense 0 - 1 Braga
A one way game, where Braga did more than enough to get a secure win, but only made it in the end of the match. A very good game by Paulinho who worked all game long, always believing.

Standings:

Disappointed that Portimonense gave away that 3 goal lead, could be vital come the end of the season.
Was over in Portugal last week and paid my first visit to Estadio Da Luz for the game last Wednesday.
If I'm to be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the ground, maybe the game and weather didn't help.
The pre match eagle show however, was very impressive.
Maybe we should do it at Old Trafford, with a pigeon or something similar...

Another comfortable win... just the 5 heart attacks this time around.

Porto derby tomorrow

We got lucky. Rio Ave played well and deserved something out of this game. I can't complain. Bad news with Mathieu out since i don't trust André Pinto. Piccini although in good form can be replaced with Ristovski who has looked good in the few times i saw him.

JJ completely outplayed by Luciano Spallletti from Rio Ave, no Piccini and no Mathieu for Tuesday, the prospect of facing Juve with André Pinto or Ristovski is depressing to say the least.

Round 10 Results:

Portimonense 5 - 2 Setúbal

This is a tricky result, because Setúbal actually played well and was harmed by the ref and VAR decisions. With fair decisions they would be winning at HT.
It was a very entretaining game, both teams attacking and trying to score goals. Nakajima is proving to be one of the best hirings of the league by now. He's a fantastic creative player with high technical attributes. Really good player. The striker Fabrício made a quite good exibition aswell, but Ricardo Ferreira must be the MOTM for me. His decisive saves kept Portimonense on top of the score and that made the difference.

Aves 1 - 3 Guimarães
After a poor exibition last round, Guimarães made a decente game, but the result could had gone either way. Raphinha made the difference between both teams, and probably will get a shout at a bigger club next season.

Paços de Ferreira 1 - 0 Estoril
What a terrible match those people had to attend. This is one of those matches where both teams deserved to loose. The game was decided by an unfortunate own goal.

Braga 1 - 0 Chaves
Another poor game to sum. Braga worked a little bit more, but a terrible exibition from both teams. The goal was scored on a corner who was poorly defended by Chaves. Otherwise, it would be a clear 0-0.

Boavista 0-3 Porto
Another tricky result. Porto deserved the win in the end, but the game was quite even until the second goal. Boavista failed to convert the chances and Porto didn't. Brahimi creativity made the difference. He disjointed Boavista defence through the match.

Beleneses 3 - 0 Moreirense
Heavy result for Moreirense that deserved much better. It's hard for them, their defencve is quite poor and this result costed Manuel Machado the sacking. Hassan Yebda made a solid exibition either defending, either attacking.

Marítimo 2 - 0 Tondela
The most objective team won, but Tondela made it a very even match. Ricardo Valente made another good match and I suspect he might get to a better team if he continues to play like this.

Rio Ave 0 - 1 Sporting
As said by Sporting fans, Rio Ave clearly deserved the result. They created so many chances (19 vs 6 from Sporting), but failed to put the ball in the net. They could had won confortably, to be honest. But Sporting individualities saved them from a certain points drop match.

Benfica 1 - 0 Feirense
Quite balanced match, Benfica got a slight edge. If Feirense had a more quality dpeth in the squad, they could had won this game, because their substitutions were quite underwhelming. Jonas continues to save the day, which is quite a bad sign, a veteran player saving a title battler club.

Standings:
34zzo6q.jpg

To be fair, unless Porto's from drops massively, I think they have a really good chance to win this title. In the relegation battle we have Estoril, which is kinda surprising. Their squad is quite decent for a midtable classification and I guess they will recover sooner or later.

Moreirense, Chaves and Aves, as you could read in my seaon preview post :P, are down there unsurprinsingly and should be there until the end. They really have poor squads, even for the portuguese elague standards. Mainly Moreirense. They are clearly the weakest squad.

Moreirense choice for new manager was baffling. But probably few managers would accept to pick such a terrible squad.

Here's Round 11 results:

Sporting 2 - 2 Braga
A game that could had gone either side. A poor defensive performance by Sporting that could had lost this game. Danilo made a very good game, making some good midfield runs creating havoc on Sporting defence.

Guimarães 1 - 3 Benfica
A poor game by Benfica, but the victory was deserved, to be honest. Guimarães has been very poor defensively this season. Jonas saves the day once again and he's showing that age doesn't matter.

Chaves 4 - 2 Paços de Ferreira
This game was more balanced than the result shows. A good entretaining match, with both teams trying to play decent football. Even though he's nothing special, Platiny was clearly the motm: scored two goals and made some good link-ups

Feirense 0 - 1 Marítimo
A game of two halves. Marítimo was clearly stronger on the first, while Feirense did enough to get at least a draw. Ricardo Valente made another good exibition. This guy will probably get transfered to Braga or Guimarães sooner or later.

FC Porto 2 - 0 Belenenses
This game was quite balanced. until the 2-0, Belenenses could had scored a few, but Porto's new starter José Sá is showing why he had taken Casillas place. He made some very good saves securing the result. but the motm was Alex Telles: defended well and was quite a threat going forward.

Estoril 0 - 2 Rio Ave
A very poor season by Estoril which is surprising, because they quite have a decent squad for the portuguese league level. Tarantini keeps showing that he still got it. Good work ethic, nice creativity and good passing. Too bad he only got to Primeira Liga so late in his career, because he's a very interesting player.

Moreirense 1 - 1 Portimonense
A draw between two teams who will battle against relegation, but Portimonense clearly deserved to win. They created enough chances for a confrotable victory, but failed to convert. Paulinho made a decent match and was above the rest, but not by much.

Tondela 3 - 2 Boavista
A surprisingly good match between two teams who usually are cautious. Both teams tried their beast to score more goals. Murillo was the difference on this match, he was quite a threat during all game.

Setúbal 0 - 1 Aves
A decisive game for both teams, and Setúbal bottled it. The match ws poorly played and both teams showed horrible football in most of the match. Paulo MAchado is starting to become match fit and was the difference between both teams. He can be the key for Aves to keep themselves at Primeira Liga.

Christ, if we play like this vs Olympiakos I don't know if we are able to pick a point, only positive I take from this is São Patrício.

Nothing like celebrating Palhinha's contract renewal by benching him and playing that useless turd Petrovic. God i hate Jesus (non religion)

Quim hasn't retired?!

Quim  that should sound funny for english speaking people. Yeah he does mate. Still going strong with over 40 years of age. Had a great MoM performance against Benfica this year.

Yes it does.

Was watching most of Aves-Porto yesterday (just to see if Ryan Gauld would get some minutes) and thought I recognised the silver haired fox in their goal.

Porto were very average and didn't really test him that much after the early goal.

I remember him playing for Portugual just before euro 2000 so was surprised to find out he is "only" 42.

Porto were tired after their Champions league midweek tie. With the financial fair play rules, they have a very thin squad and it's starting to get noticed. They should have had a pen in the last min though. Danilo got clipped. Ryan Gauld was starting and picking up form when he got injured. He also lost some space with the manager change but he's starting to get more mins with Vidigal recently. I like Gauld but i don't know if he's top club material. Let's see how he evolves with the loans. He has shown some potencial at Setúbal and Aves.

You lazy bastards. A guy can't be busy at work that there are no updates.

So here they are:

Belenense 0 - 1 Chaves
Not a big surprise here. Chaves was doing good games, but not getting results. They are improving now, and have to credit Chaves board for not sacking Castro, who is a very good manager and he literally almost had to rebuild the team from scratch.
The game was balanced and could had gone either way, but Belenenses probably did enough to get at least a draw. Pedro Tiba continues to prove to be an essential key player for Chaves.

Portimonense 2 - 0 Tondela
A good result for Portimonense, who started poorly but they are having a deserved recovery. The play good football, and I think these kind of small teams who try to give their best upfront should be rewarded with the results they deserve.
Nakajima scored two more, and was easilly MOTM. Nakajima and Paulinho are clearly two of the best players of this season so far. I doubt they would stay at Portimonense for much longer.

Boavista 1 - 0 Moreirense
Fair victory, that could had been more expressive in numbers. Fábio Espinho keeps showing that age is just a number, making another great exibition.

Aves 1 - 1 Porto
Porto not only dropped some points, but they could had lost this match. Aves made a solid pressing game, creating chances and a lot of problems for Porto to solve.
If only Aves had more quality depth at the bench, they would had won this match. Vitor Gomes made s olid exibition and was replaced exausted.

Maritimo 0 - 0 Estoril
Only one team tried to play: Estoril. they totally deserved to win, and they could had done it confrotably. They had many chances. Marítimo was extremely lucky. Kyriakou is starting to adapt and showing the potential he has. He is considered a very promising u21 player.

Paços 1 - 2 Sporting
Just like Porto, Sporting could had lost points here. They made a very shaky exibition and their defence was totally exposed by the midfield, leaving Paços on many one-on-one situations at the back. If Paços had won the game, it wouldn't be a surprise for people in the stadium. Rui Patrício was the decisive player for me. He made a couple of key saves that secured the 0 - 1 and Sporting evetually scored the second on the break.

Benfica 6 - 0 Setúbal
Easy game for Benfica, even though most of the goals came from set pieces situations. Don't get fooled by the results, this is Setúbal vintage. The wages are probaly starting to get late and the players wont be as motivated. Jonas keeps making great games, even though he0's already a veteran.

Braga 3 - 1 Feirense
THe match was more even than the result shows. This Brag team is deceiving: they have a good table position, but their football is quite poor for the squad quality. It's the only thing holding Abel's job, since the football quality is bellow standards for any Braga supporter. Their victories are more due to individual quality than teamwork. Fernandes is the MOTM here: he came to replace Fransergio who got injured and not only he did well, he aslo score two goals.
Fransergio is a big loss to Braga. He is one of the best players of our league at his position.

Rio Ave 0 - 1 Vitória Guimarães
Another unfair result, but Douglas saved so many clear goals, it is impossible not to nominate him MOTM.

Porto at the top, but this Friday a boiling game between Porto and Benfica at Dragão Stadium. Porto are favourites, but will they hold the pressure of facing the eternal rivals?

You lazy bastards. A guy can't be busy at work that there are no updates.
Just to keep the subject related to AVB, if we keep waiting more years for new center backs we are doomed, I don't know what the hell they are doing on the Academies related to the development of some specific positions.

You really can't plan that too well. If the player with best potential to become a center back will choose another path, nothing can be done. Usually in the youth teams (U14 and bellow) players are rotating between several positions. It is quite rare for a player who never changed his position during the youth football, with the exception of keepers. And even with keepers, there are still some cases where a field players goes to the goalie during a warm-up session, and he's so natural that the staff will insist him to play there.

I usually agree with your match reports but you got it wrong. We missed about 4 to 5 clear chances (Dost on his own missed two clear chances) and the defense was solid with Mathieu and Coentrão earning high marks. There were also no Patrício heroics, at least compared to other games. All the pundits i heard post match said we had the game under control as well. We definitely earned the win and i don't think Paços was close to winning.

I also saw the match, and I do think Paços could had got a much better result. Sporting did a solid first half, but than lost the midfield control arround the 60 mins. Paços got very good chances while 0-1, and could had got the draw if it wasn't for Patricio concetration on the goalie.

The defence was quite good, but I think the miedfield let your defenders too exposed to one-on-one situations. Lucky for them, the quality of Sporting defence is quite good this season.

It's a matter of opinion or perception i guess. It's not green tinted glasses since Bruno Prata and António Fidalgo on Rtp3 had the same opinion. In clear chances we had about 5 to 2 chances from Paços. I do conceed that the midfield struggled on the second half. Anyways like i said, it's a matter of opinion. Roll on to a fun filled next round. Interesting league so far this year.

I think after this round you guys will be with the same points as Porto. Something tells me that a draw is coming at Dragão. Porto is dropping form, Benfica is not playing good either, has all the ingredients for a draw :D

Let's see if we don't screw up against Belenenses. I remember last season game very well, a morning game, was at the stadium and we got crushed thanks to a JJ special. I'd also bet on a draw, 1-1 with Benfica scoring first. I just hope there are no major incidents, the hate level has been at a all time high.

Dia da Mulher Sportinguista  JJ vintage, the faces of the guys in Sporting TV after we lost, I never know what to expect from us, so far I am not impressed with our performances in the League, we have been better this season preparing the Champions League matches.

More one painfull performance, playing like this I doubt we even get the second place, nevermind the first.

We're in first place waiting for Porto-Benfica and the team got whistled by the fans. That says it all about that second half.

Like we say in Portugal: "Não se joga uma beata"

The flu made me miss another tactical masterpiece by JJ.

That wasn't that bad, Sporting just missed too many chances.

Not that bad? JJ this season is making us to play like old school italian teams, speculating with the game, not liking at all the development of this team.

Benfica in 4-3-3, who would have said? I actually thought this Krovinović character was a pure #10.

That wasn't that bad, Sporting just missed too many chances.

Don't know if you usually watch portuguese football but that's not how one of the big three plays against the other teams at home. We should be controlling possession and they have to be fighting not to concede the 2-0 without even thinking of drawing the game. I don't remember the last time we were dominated at home for so long as we were in that second half against a team like Belenenses even if we had more than enough chances to kill the game off. It felt a lot worse too since everytime we actually pressured their defense they were gifting us chances.

I don't mind a more conservative aproach but we were playing that way because we couldn't even keep the ball, not because we wanted to.

Rant over :D

So far Benfica is controling well the match, didn't knew there was a clássico between Estoril and Portimonense tbh:D

Intense and balanced, not particularly well played, is it?
