Portuguese Football 2017/2018

Our mental resilience is amazing, we have turned around so many bad results this season.
I just hope we can keep things going with our small squad.

For the love of Maregod buy Nakajima, we need another offensive flair kind of player as Corona is useless and Hernani is terrible (and Otávio is always injured).

And please sell Brahimi, he really deserves a challenge is a big team.
I think Man Utd is actually a very good choice as Utd really needs "can openers" attackers like him.
In fact Utd could also get Alex Telles as he would just jump into the starting XI with no problem.
I really like Brahimi when he is in a good day, but most of the times, regardless of being talented and be a "can opener" as you called him, he makes bad decisions after bad decisions. Instead of doing the simple/easy thing, he often tries to dribble and make "rotundas"(I don't know the word in english but translator says roundabout) and if one or two years ago i thought he would explode, now I think he will remain at this level as his decision making remains many levels under his footballing qualities. You should keep Marega for next season, as you have beeen in trouble in the last season finding reliable goalscorers(André Silva and Depoitre are not enough for the starting spot, in my opinion).

That's why I said I want him to get the "challenge" of going into a bigger club, not just because of being there because he deserves but also to see how good (or bad) he can do.
Sometimes I'm not sure if his decision making is because of himself only or if he had better teammates so that he isn't the only top class one that would improve.
His dribbling ability and efficiency is outstanding in any team really, I want to see him have really good team mates and see what he can do.

Marega is that ugly duckling thing lol
I have no problem at all with him, his style is not pretty but I don't care as long as he's effective.
André Silva was good enough IMHO, his season last year up to this point in fact was similar to what Marega is doing for example.
It was his first season in the main team the standard was not that high anyway. I was definitively happy with his performances.
Depoitre is another completely different thing, he was doomed from start as he had no affinity to the playstyle we use, he was a panic and feed-the-agents buy.

Benfica won in Braga stadium, a traditional hard game. Benfica dominated the game until Braga scored the 2-1, when the home team gained some power and got some hope to equalize the game, but fortunately the game ended as an important win to Benfica.
Nice goal from Jimenez after missing a sitter.

Benfica's defense is clearly a problem that will probably cost the 5th title in a row. Andre Almeida have been playing well(a lot better than is expected from him). Grimaldo is a timebomb, it's a matter of time(1 game or 2 probably) until he gets injured for the rest of the season and there isn't any substitute with enough quality(I would test Cervi, as he shown some signs that he can defend when he is called to do it).

Ruben Dias have been playing well but is very young and is expected to make some errors.

Jardel, if regains his form, will had stability to the backline.

Luisao is completely finished.

The main problem is GK. I didn't expect that the loss of Ederson would be so hard to solve. Bruno Varela and Svillar are not ready and I'm not sure they will ever be, both of them show serious flaws that make me unconfident.

I usually don't watch Braga games, only the higlights, but I enjoyed watching Bruno Xadas(was very good in the last year U20 WC and was expected to go to one of the big 3), I think he will make at least a solid career in the portugueses league, but can reach higher flights. Ricardo Horta is clearly more mature as a player than he was at Malaga.

Benfica are starting to come alive at the right time, they're only in 1 competition and their fixtures look as easy as possible for the rest of the season.

If benfica wins the title I will stop watching football for a year, the worst team in years who was humiliated in Europe and still win games in Portugal.

I hope Benfica wins it, the meltdown of portistas and sportinguistas would be hilarious.

Don't know about the other Sporting fans here but I'd be ok with Bas Dost scoring an hattrick every week

Perfect 2 games in a row, exactly what we needed. 8 goals scored, 0 conceded and a nice start for Ruben Ribeiro. Need to keep gaining momentum and put pressure on Porto, they have a lot of tough games still to play.

Dost just keep scoring. Wonder how many goals it will take for him to get a start for Holland ahead of Vincent fecking Janssen.

Been watching Estoril-Porto. Estoril leading 1-0 at half time.

Turned back just now for second half and pitch is flooded with fans, anyone got a clue what's going on?

I'm guessing a bomb threat as it seems they've evacuated the stand behind the goal.

Stand has structural problems apparently and a part of it fell/cracked so the fans are on the pitch for now. Hopefully this gives the Estoril players the rest they need.

No idea what they're going to do with the fans.

Can't see the match continuing tonight if that's the case. Other two stands are full.

Shame as game was nicely poised. Porto missed some sitters last ten minutes of the half.

I'm sure they'll find a way. Portuguese desenrascanço rarely fails.

There was an earthquake near there tonight so this might have been something to do with that.

Game suspended. Embarassing.

Now I hope the game continues where they left it off and Brahimi doesn't suddenly get to play.

So the game won’t be played today and this is Porto’s calendar.

Porto vs Tondela - 19/01
Porto vs Sporting - 24/01
(If Porto beats Sporting) - 27/01
Moreirense vs Porto - 31/01
Porto vs Braga - 04/02
Porto vs Sporting - 07/02
Chaves vs Porto - 11/02
Porto vs Liverpool - 14/02

We might go over a month with Porto losing to Estoril 1-0 with 45 minutes still to play.

Confirmed. The second half will be played on the 21st of February.

Brahimi will be able to play even though he was injured and wasn’t even on the bench for this game.

so he did not even start ? Surely if they are playing second half of the game it is a continuation and those who were on the pitch, resume the game?

He wasn't even registered for the match but I think they'll have to make a substitution for him to play, not 100% sure though. Very weird situation.

Meanwhile... El avioncito is back!

No excuses now, the past couple of weeks have been perfect for us and dare I say it, despite Porto having the best XI in the league now I think we have the best squad. Besides leftback where we're missing a good alternative to Coentrão I'm happy with every position.

For all the shit our president gets from our rivals even they're recognising the good work he's been doing. We must kick on now and start showing we have what it takes to win the league.

It is a very odd situation as it is not a normal occurrence , but as I say if it is a continuation of a game surely the same players should play. Again, this is Porto and they will bend the rules to suit them if need be ;)

Good to have Fredy back in green and white!

Unbelievable... completely dominated Setubal who had more dives than passes, miss chance after chance after chance and then the classic 94th minute penalty. How the feck can we be winning 1-0 in the 94th minute and have their striker on a 1v1 vs our keeper after they simply hoof the ball from their own goal? Today was the day to show we had what it takes to win the league and instead we get this. Embarassing.

Now we need to win our next 5 league games before our trip to Porto otherwise the league is gone.

SANTO PATRICIO > SAN IKER

I went into this without even caring since it's the Lucilio cup but it got pretty intense. Not that it matters now but William might just be the worst penalty taker in football history and he got chosen to take the 5th penalty

When I saw that he was chosen i just laughed at it. Why they still choose him after showing for too many different occasions that he is not capable of doing it?

Pleased just because it was a game against Porto, still don't care about the league cup.

Why are they playing all these games at the Braga ground?

Why are they playing all these games at the Braga ground?

I think they choose a new stadium every year.

Disgusting game of football with the cherry on top being that decision to not send off a player after he clears the ball with his hand on the goalline. Couldn’t care less if we win or lose this shit cup.

Feel sorry for Vitória, they managed to lose this without losing a single match.

The previous 'triple-punishment' rule required a red card - and therefore a suspension - as well as the award of a penalty under those circumstances.

However, players committing accidental fouls that deny a goalscoring chance will now be cautioned instead.

But deliberate fouls will still incur a red card.

It's a clear red. He cleared the ball of the line with his hand on purpose, it was a terrible decisio by the ref and the only justification for it is he doesn't even know the rules.

You played well yesterday, especially in the first half. No idea how that team is currently in last place and it would be a shame if you went down. Is Paciencia always playing like this or was it a special game?

I don't really want to over analyze game situations, just posted that because it maybe was what the ref thought. That's a typical Paciencia game. The biggest problem with the team is that only eleven/twelve players exist. The bench doesn't have any quality. And the team commits lots of errors. You can see that in the last games for the league (not counting with sporting game at bonfim).
We were winning 2 - 0 and we let the other teams get the ties. Against Estoril, they scored two goals in the last 10 min. Moreirense got the second goal also at minute 87 or something. If we got the 6 points we would be higher in the table.

Well, let's see what happens

I'm really hoping that Vitoria don't get relegated, as they are historical club, one of the few clubs of the south(I'm from Beja) and my granfather always showed some affection due to his uncle played there.
I only watched the highlights and the games against Benfica and league cup games, and they really look to struggle in the defensive processses.
Paciencia looks really good, it is rare to see a player of his size to have such technical attributes, he looked like Ibra yesterday. He has some playmaking abilities and if he becomes more consistent, I would love to see him in Benfica playing the Jonas role, but that is almost impossible.

Oh my God... my neighbors were screaming, Conceição was running on the pitch, the fans going mental aaaaaand offside

feck yes. Terrible result for Porto, Moreirense played an horrible match, they didn't start wasting time until the 80th minute, they didn't even have fans to put some pressure on the ref and they still drew. Porto should have easily won this by 3 or 4 with the chances they had and I still have no idea how that Telles freekick didn't go in.

We're 2 points behind Porto now and Porto-Sporting is 6 games away. We must win all 5 games until then and hope Porto lose points, they're losing 1-0 at half time in Estoril but their next games are Braga at home and Chaves away which will not be easy.

The GK in the flash interview discovered that the goal was cancelled due to an offside. He wasted time with injuries, was all the time moaning in the ground.
I'm so happy with this draw!

Another really hard fought win, we are not playing well, and if it wasn't Mathieu individual class we were marching for another draw, hard to predict who will win this season imo.

Johnatan Silva sold to Roma and no Sportinganço tonight. Happy days
