Post-match discussion

I bloody hope we've somehow talked Guardiola round, because that is literally the only way I can possibly rationalise us sticking with a manager who, never mind the players, has completely lost the fans.
They are preparing for Giggs to take over and these aren't ideal circumstances to let him begin his job. He will be appointed in the summer.

How come we haven't learnt from the previous shit results and god awful performances, then?

I know there's nothing else the players could say, but I'm sick of the usual, cliched garbage that's being spouted after every single bad result. I guess I notice it more due to the fact that it's same old shit, different week.

all talk, no action.

I don't see how this summer will be any better? At least if he comes in now, it might lift the players enough to scrape into the Champions League, regardless of whether he has the attributes to actually manage us in the long term.

well i expected that having Herrera rather than Fellaini in midfield would give us more creativity and forward intent but it didnt happen
I think we are misunderstanding what SAF was scouting Herrera for. I said in his thread that he is a player who does the hassling and harrying to bring mistakes out of the opposition. He needs a class midfielder next to him to pick up from there and make the passes. When he was here first he was doing that or trying to but LvG told him not to do it as it wasted energy. Yes he can make passes but it isn't really his game. I said I like that terrier type in midfield. We have not made signings that are complementing each other and are trying to make them into something they aren't instead of playing a system that will bring the best out of them. It was mentioned that if we had signed a Vidal type to play with him it would have worked. LvG has done absolutely no homework on his players, watched how they played for their previous clubs.

More square pegs in round holes today from LvG.

Darmain played as third centre-back. Borthick and Lingard as wing backs. Roles they have hardly ever played before. Then when we need a goal to equalise he plays another attacker (Adnan) at wing back and Smalling as an attacker.

Really? That's shocking even for his standards.

To be fair, Smalling and McNair had two of the best forward runs in the game! :annoyed:

Not sure I agree with your assessment of Herrera - his passing is good, he showed that last season but has been playing poorly lately.

The 5-3-2 formation wasn't clearly working yet still he persevered for the whole game. That's well....
It beggars belief that he still insists on trying the 5-3-2. It's literally never worked for us.

Piss poor. Simply unacceptable.

Every day that Van Gaal is allowed to continue we make a bigger mockery of this once great club.

What is the argument for him continuing here? I'd love to know. There isn't a single club besides ours that would allow this to happen. Week after week - awful football. Our paying supporters booing en masse. Criticism from every corner - yet nothing.

Its become a joke now. Except nobody is laughing

Anyone else notice how long it takes Rooney to get a shot off? It must be at least 1 and 1/2 seconds for him to position the ball, take two short steps to position planted foot, put his left arm in air, and finally shoot.

I'm becoming very concerned with Schneiderlein as I thought he was going to be a stalwart DM for the next manager. However, he is also slow to execute his ideas. Too many steps and not enough nice touches. I really thought he would grow into a Busquets type player with quick 2 touch passes and some deft one-touch passes. Did we buy another dud? God, I hope not. I hope it's LvGs coaching and philosophy that is making him an average player.

Awful performance. Gaal has been unlucky with injuries and maybe should have kept the likes of Chicharito, Fletcher and Evans, who are all playing well now for their new clubs. At this point the style and tempo and level of confidence are all wrong and the players need to be reinvigorated by a change in management. He's been too clever for his own good with his small squad and weird formations and selections and playing people out of position and odd substitutions. Play to their strengths, man.

Although the players are performing poorly I am not going to judge them too harshly until we see how they perform for a new manager. We know that Darmian, Schneiderlin and Herrera are good players because they have shown it for other teams.

We've got too many useless individuals to make a team.

Rooney - it's impossible for our forwards to string passes together when every time he gets the ball he either plays it backwards, belts it out to the wing, or just loses it. The odd goal cant make up for what he's lacking elsewhere.

Lingard - is he too scared to take his man on? Can he not do it? Has LVG told him not to? Same applies to Memphis.

Fellaini - unless he's got the ball on his chest he looks like someone who's won a competition to be out there.

McNair - how many goals does he have to cost us before we realise he's not good enough? It's the same mistakes every time.

I agree he can make passes, just not sure that is the main reason we were looking at him in the first place. He isn't playing well, but I am not sure he knows exactly what his role is. It seems to change from one game to the next. In fact you could say it about all the players.

That is the point I keep trying to get across. A new manager and system could do wonders for all the players. I think they are all trying, but just look lost and need help badly and it is not forthcoming from the manager, just more criticism.

Man of the Match vote: Shane Long, ran us ragged. No Utd player deserved it, simply dreadful throughout the team. LVG has to go.

LVG should not be reshaping the team and I think that is why it will never work. He can't convince this team and I don't think he believes in this team. He's sending out all the wrong messages. He says they were lucky but the fact is (and this has been in a number of games), you could have had the shits for 60 minutes + and missed nothing.

I would like to ask every single player, what they were doing. It's a waste of time. You have to know who you are better then. We HAVE to be better then the saints. While they have good players, we have to KNOW we are better and not change formation at home. I would sack him now. I like the guy but I think him and Moyes are mindfecking the club. Even if we got to the top of the league again this season, we'd give it away next game with a nothing performance....

Thank god this match was just a 3:00 game and not shown on tv. I don't think I could sit through another 90 minutes of that crap, what I saw on MOTD was more than enough.

What was the atmosphere like at this game? I didn't go to it, nor keep up with it at the time.

I've heard that they booed quite loud at half time, cheered when fellaini was taken off and booed at full time. But I've heard that in the past and when I've watched the highlights and it's not been that bad

Watching them walking off after the game on MUTV and the abuse LvG was getting was really bad. People really letting him have it. The booing was loud.

Serious question: How can a team know it is better than the opponent if it isn't?

You assume United are better. Based on what? Where's the evidence backing your position? A number of depressing stats - see the corresponding thread - just backing up what you've been seeing on the pitch for many weeks.

Now I don't mean to say that United players lack quality or are mediocre (although some are but you have those in most teams).

What I mean is that United's team as assembled by LvG with the style and tactical approach is not better than many of your opponents. You can blame a bit of bad luck (e.g. injuries) for it but it's also due to poor planning (e.g. LvG's preference for threadbarely thin squads) and lack of flexibility (e.g. LvG insisting on playing a system he may not have the players available for to play it successfully).

People were getting very aggressive, it can't continue. The longer they ignore us the more chance someone will take action themselves. LVG will need one of these for leaving the pitch soon.

My mate (Gunner) was like "(chuckles), There you go again!!" on Saturday.
And I was like "Yeah!! Alright!!" That has become mostly the reaction nowadays.
