Post-match discussion

I think this is a team bereft of confidence and a manager who is unable to give it back to them. Sod possession football. If we are not creating anything we might as well just go for it. This theory that it tires teams out. Well that hasn't been working. It works if the other team is running around like headless chickens after the ball, but they aren't. They just let us have the ball because we do nothing with it.

Clean sheet, but Palace should definitely have scored. Our defence being strong is a bit of a myth. Stats can tell you that we don't concede many, but watching the game can show you that we don't half give them chances to score. The other team just doesn't take those chances. How we can constantly dominate possession but all the best chances go to the opposition, I don't understand.

Awful game.

Best chance of the game for falls to Rooney, perfect through ball from Martial....and not only does he not collect the ball, but then is so slow that it goes away from him. I wouldn't mind if that ball was over-hit, but it wasn't. 95% of professional footballers collect that and are 1v1 with the keeper.

Dunno about the rest of you, but watching United now im starting to see Rooney being abandoned by the other lads. Couple time sin that game i saw Herrera not only doing Rooney's captain job trying to organise people, but countermanding Rooney's bad suggestions. Herrera looked completely fed up at one point too when Rooney failed to play a simple 2 yard pass in front of Herrera.

Awful from pretty much everyone though today. Out position in the league aint bad, but Spurs are playing better now and Liverpool could well push on as well. With Arsenal and City running away a little bit now, we need to put in some results.

I didn't see the game so I will reserve judgement, however the state don't look good at all. 1 shot on target for the entire game!?

Clearly LVG is a very competent manager judging by his track record. The Rooney situation is perplexing to say the least though, I don't disagree with Rooney being captain, but I do disagree with him being undroppable.

The knee jerk stuff in this thread is cringeworthy, like RAWK on a bad day, LVG is clueless etc. It's fine margins between success and failure.

There is no urgency in our team, at least show some intent, like when being subbed you shouldn't be walking off.
Nobody seems aware when they have time to turn, or at least make a positive pass. Every instinct seems to be the back pass. Even Herrera seems to be going down that road.
There is no pace in the 3 alongside Martial. Pace is so vital in football. At least if Mata is on the right, you have to play someone who can overlap him, Darmian offers no attacking threat whatsoever. Rooney was near his top level for me, which is extremely ordinary for PL standards. Our plan was to pass it to Martial, and see what happens.
It's getting very worrying when you're pining for Zaha to come back.
Some will excuse Rooney saying the whole team was crap, but when there is no pace and no ability to dribble past a man in three out of our front four this will be the norm. One of these three is undropable, that's just insane. We need pace, we need runs behind the defence. If there is someone we should be playing into form, it should be Memphis, the potential is there, the goal threat is there. With Rooney, it's all going downhill. It's getting to the level of building a very expensive team with championship hopes around a player with similar skill set as Sebastian Larsson. That's the level he's at now.

Best chance of the game for falls to Rooney

We're just going to forget about Herrera getting a great ball inside the box that just needed a little composure and somehow managing to tie his legs in a knot are we?

Cheers
  • Dave
  • Ashley Young super-sub fullback
  • I chopped up some leftover sausage to mix in with my ramen noodles and it was fantastic
Jeers:
  • We seem to have forgotten the fundamental purpose of out-scoring the other team
  • We are one superstar forward away from a title, but Rooney is no longer one
  • I actually considered switching to the City game when I saw it was tied, because it felt like we would only be losing points in this one in the 2nd half.

Absolute borefest. Pointless possession, no penetration. I have no idea how we're going to challenge this season. We just need to re-evaluate our ambitions. Top four is probably the best we can hope for, especially whilst City keep digging out wins, and Arsenal playing like they want to challenge this year.

Darmian our worst player for once instead of Rooney.

As an aside, Palace fans are genuine cnuts.

Missed the game as travelling but it sounds very very bad mate...

Not only undroppable, but unchangeable too during matches. Wtf would it take for Rooney to be subbed ?

LVG my man you really fecked up by trusting rooney to get you goals this season.

You fecked up.

Sadly the other players didn't have the legs to keep up with Martial at that point. He was mostly running into maybe 3-4 palace players all by himself. Herrera and Mata were nowhere to be seen.

It really does mean that we need to buy a right winger or another forward with some pace. This is even assuming that Memphis comes good eventually. We are just too slow with Mata and Rooney as two of our 3 attackers.
I actually thought Young, Herrera and in the late period Lingard pushed up quite well when we attacked. The problem is as you said Martial was alone when they were bringing the ball up the pitch. Apart from one run Rooney made when Martial played that bad through ball, the rest of our players were on the habit of arriving late.

stuffing the life and creativity out of the team. About the only things Fellaini good at (winning headers and chest control) have gone too.

I notice there was a chance where Lingard could have shot but chose to pass. it looks like the players are instructed not to shoot.

Because our possession is usually in very dangerous areas such as near our own goal or around the halfway line. When we lose the ball in those areas, its easy for the opposition to create a good chance.

Sometimes having an attack that is feared can be a better form of defence than this possession shite. At least the opponents will think twice before getting forwards or leaving our strikers space.

Oh Come off it. You'd rather lose 3-0 in 25 mins is it.

Fans here need to get a grip! Seen Chelsea lately anyone? We're stale going forward. That can be fixed. Let's not act like this was worse than a fecking drubbing.
I am talking about overall performance not result. Result can be better through a worse performance.
I am one of the positive ones here, I rarely moan and am not going to waste time in numerous Rooney or LvG threads but am just expressing what looked a truly awful performance to me.

Far cry from the days when Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez etc. would bust a gut to get forwards and onto the end of a cross/pass.

I got stick in the match day thread making fun of how some of the people on caf will come out after this match and make the same old excuses. Rooney wasn't that bad. We had a lot of possession. Palace away is a really tough game. We are getting better.

I was making partial jokes, but you read some of what people say on here and I am simply astounded. We should've lost 4-0 at a minimum. The fact we drew 0-0 with 1 shot on target means we got extremely lucky. LVG says we haven't had any luck. I beg to differ. We just got handed a point we did not deserve through sheer LUCK. We only have 1 player willing and capable of taking his man on. The rest of our attack is conditioned to receive the ball at feet and immediately send it backwards to a player with more space, mind you much farther from the opponents goal.

LVG attacks Scholes for actually saying what I think a lot of United fans, and probably most football fans, are thinking. We look a very average side. I still think that we will be scrapping it out for our CL spot again. Just can't see a title push when we can't even create a handful of chances.

Away clean sheet and a point gained. I think Blind and DDG were the only good performers today. The rest were awful.

I have just left the game and am waiting for the train. That was fecking desperate. First live game I've seen this year. Summary:
Rooney was awful. Didn't run, didn't create, lost the ball constantly.
Mata, tried very hard. What I didn't fully appreciate from the TV was how much he moves and tries to get on the ball. Was a bright light.
That's it really..... Young was good when he came on one of the few players with an attacking mindset.
The rest were largely atrocious. Can't recall a shot on target against a hugely limited palace side. If this is how we've been playing I will abandon all hope for this year. Completely fecking unacceptable.

That freaking annoyed me. It was in the closing minutes of the game and he ended it passing it back to Herrera. Can't say if it was instructions or Jesse himself but that was ridiculous.

Key here is "bad day". These are patterns we recognize, not a few individual instances.

My question is this - What would take for LvG to improve us? In your opinion? Let's say he will make it better. How? He already had a full transfer season and picked his players. With his idea of football and tactics, what would he do to improve us further?

If giggs wants to become a succesful manager, let alone a successful Manchester United manager he should have the guts to bench rooney, or at least tell his boss LVG to drop him and handle the possible outbreak himself.

Isn't that's the use of "respected by players" traits are for? to quell this bullshit primadona shit

The worst thing for me was NCBSN switching matches at the end and seeing more passion from Norwich in one minute than we'd shown all game.

I noticed that.
I said this during the Summer transfer window: we have a bunch of terribly nice guys playing for us. We need a few cnuts, who can change the nature of the game.
Keane was a grade A cnut, but that's what we need in a captain.
We don't have anybody who can "gee up" our players and bring out some passion and urgency.

I noticed when we played against PSV. Shaw broke his leg. Our reaction, once again, was no passion and another passionless performance. If a mate of mine just got his leg broken, I'd be going mental, using every bit of energy I have to win every challenge and the game.

It almost feels that our players have been drugged, before they start every game.

Teams know exactly how to set up to defend us now.

Focus on attack.
We scored 1 out of 4 penalties a few days ago.
We scored 1 goal in our last 4 games.
So, the most obvious weakness is that we are scared of the goal. Maybe gear all training sessions (for the next 2 weeks) on attacking play (ie. forward passes only), rather than possession, side/back passes and defending?

Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Mata, Rooney.

What do those players have in common? All of them, once they receive a pass, will look around for a passing option. You can’t expect any of them to turn and beat a player. That’s not their game, simple as that.

It seems we have a total number of one player who can dribble with the ball. I swear it looks like every fecking team we face has at least 3 (including full backs).

It’s criminal that Young is sitting on the bench, considering the circumstances I mentioned above, and even if he plays- he’s a fecking fullback! I know he isn’t a worldbeater, but we need runners and dribblers.

Mata and Rooney up front is a recipe for disaster. Martial has had brilliant moments today, again, but it isn’t and won’t be enough.

For the record, I think van Gaal is doing decent job considering the squad he has at his disposal, but there’s a couple of things wrong with his team selection.
Pretty sure I saw mata collect the ball and immediately turn and beat his man during that game..

Bastian is the closest thing we have to a combatant, especially knowing what age he is in and previous injuries. He has this winning mentality in him.

What has Van Gaal said post game?

this. has any one seen his post match comments. can anyone post a video of it. In moments like these while i know post match comments would only infuriate me even more, i have a great urge to see them. for some closure at least

This is a great answer and i agree with you fully. Now, do you think we will do that?

Oh didn't you hear...we aren't allowed to criticize Herrara...he's a little darling who can't do anything wrong! People moaned about him not getting picked...(Well he's been getting picked) and these people need to realise apart from the Everton game he's been playing at a very poor standard just like most of our players. De Gea, Smalling, Martial and Schniederlin imo are doing their jobs and having a good season, nobody else deserves that recognition.
