PL W FA Premier League

Bournemouth 1:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 14 August 2016

Or the twenty years before heightened our expectations too much. The last three years are much more relevant at looking at for judging current performances against than thinking back to prime fergie days. It makes no sense to compare our games to something so long ago.
Well I refuse to think like that. If we all thought like you we'd accept second best. Why should we? We are Manchester United remember. Mourinho himself said let's forget the last 3 years. And I agree with that sentiment.

During the dire footballing days of LVG, many "oldies" were talking about the time when MUFC werre relegated and that until that happens, we should enjoy the fact that we were in 5th place.
Some people were saying that we have no right to be at the top.
I could not understand this defeatist way of thinking.
I like it when MUFC win and this was why I so badly wanted Jose to join us. Hopefully, we will soon be back where we belong: at the top of the tree :p

The best Herrera has played since his first season. It was interesting to see that he played in a deeper role today. Any potential that he might get partnered with Pogba?

I completely agree with you. I'm not saying we have a right to be at the top no one has that by right it has to be earned. But it's certainly where we should be aiming to be...no less. We could be miles better than the last 3 years and still not be good enough. To measure our performances against the last 3 years is a joke and is aiming far too low.

Zlatan was great, he has the ability to bring players in to play. The flick for Rooney and pass to Martial is something special. Bailly was great. As long as Blind in is the team, I guess teams would be instructed to attack our left side defence. This is a step in the right direction. In 2-3 months time, this team will be more fluid including Rooney. March on Utd.

Is that still a thing? I thought it had been debunked long ago.

Well, he shouldn't be saying that, just to avoid controversy. I am pretty sure someone will pick this up.

From an attacking perspective City and Liverpool played much better than we did in this first matchday. In terms of dominating the opposition and having real chances those were quality performances and against much better opposition aswell.

But as I said, we got 3 points so I'am happy.

Haven't seen Liverpool yet but watched the City game and I feel we were better. Bournemouth are better than Sunderland and we were away. We looked more cohesive and threatening than City. I've no idea what you have seen in City's performance to make this statement. Also, to describe us as 'poor' is a joke. Things to improve and work on? Absolutely. We certainly were not poor.

We looked in charge the whole game. It was a good game to start the season with. A typical Mourinho performance you could say.

I'm pretty sure we won't be bullied by some 'smaller' teams this year. Bailly is a beast and Ibra will be a huge factor too.

When watching the game I almost forgot we have the world's most expensive player waiting to make his (second) debut. Looking forward to the rest of the season! It'll be fun.

When I saw the team sheet, with Fellani, Herrera and Mata (all three many wanted/expected to be sold by us in the summer) I knew...here was a manager who knew exactly how he wanted to play his team. His one goal is Manchester United.

I'm a huge Herrera fan but I didn't think he was great. Bailly, Fellaini, Blind and Valencia were our best players imo. In that order.

City? They were awful going forward, created nothing from open play at home against Sunderland. No chance they were better at anything other then pointless possession and bit stupid tactics tbf. Sunderland is not better then Bournemouth.

Liverpools was the most impressive win as it was away to Arsenal, but arsenal were a bit shambolic so I think we had the most complete performance by a distance. City were shaky at the back and pedestrian up front. Liverpool were very shaky defensively but great going forward. Spurs had a good second half but got dominated in the first half. Arsenal just crap.

Three points! Get in, lads were buzzing at work and I've just got in. Haven't seen the game yet. Going to bunker down and watch it before I sleep all day.
Chuffed to bits for our front four. What a day out. Martial two assists, Zlatan a goal, Rooney a goal and Mata a goal. Couldn't ask for anything better with the three points today!

Bournemouth are a decent side.

Last season, 3 goals a game against PL side at home would be like Xmas. We just got 3 goals and a win away from home, why is there still some negativity?

Nice and controlled performance. Our away performances have been largely terrible recently - van Gaal managed to win by 2+ goals away from home just twice in his 2 seasons in the PL. Mourinho is halfway there already. If this is a sign that our away form is going to drastically improve then we are in with a huge shout of winning it, there's not been a lot wrong with our home form (result wise) over the last 2 seasons. Onwards and upwards.

I saw Felani on the team sheet and a bit of me died inside.... not another year of this waste, and then he actually played really well, granted against Bournemouth, but still, maybe the genius Jose can get the best out of him.

Rooney got a goal, but it is painful, I swear he would pass backwards from either penalty spot, Zlatan actually injected some pace an movement, Rooney tried to nullify it.

You see how good Shaw is and wonder just how much impact his injury had on LVG's time here.

All in all, a few sparks from Zlatan, a good result, but over all underwhelmed by the team selection and the general play, still game 1, many more to come.

Well I refuse to think like that. If we all thought like you we'd accept second best. Why should we? We are Manchester United remember. Mourinho himself said let's forget the last 3 years. And I agree with that sentiment.

Why would that make you accept second best? The group of players isn't the ones winning titles under fergie, there are only a few players left so comparing us to that team makes no sense. It doesn't mean this team can't be the best team in the league this season. However, the last 3 years is where we are as a team realistically, not that it is good enough, but its the reference point to watch for improvement.

The bile and venom directed towards Rooney from the majority of CAFtards is absurdly farcical at times :wenger:

Can't even make a compliment without a proviso … it's embarrassing sometimes!
It is embarrassing all the time @SqueakyWeasel. What is unbelieveable is that there are other MU forums even more extreme than this one when it comes to Rooney. When you think of the committment WR has given the club since he arrived; he has been believed in by four successive managers, ... When you think he just had his testimonial; Manchester United's captain, a leader on the field. What a story; what a record. Let's just remind ourselves. He made his top level debut at sixteen years of age. He has been at United now for twelve years and has scored over 200 goals. Wayne Rooney partnered (effectively) so many in the United frontline. Good thread on the topic at https://www.redcafe.net/threads/wayne-rooney-striking-partner.400020/, but it includes RVP; Tevez; Berba; van Nistelrooy; CR9. I don't need to defend Rooney - anyone with a clue about the game knows he is an intelligent and skilful footballer (don't mind these idiots who have just discovered 'soccer' rattling on about his touch). He is totally respected by the likes of Ibra. Of course he is human and imperfect, over the years he has struggled with different issues including dicipline and sometimes match fitness, but he has stuck in there admirably, through thick and thin. Why is he so hated? Some people don't like him because at the prompting of his agent, he once considered leaving the club. Some people don't like him because he is a Scouser. Some people think he earns too much money. Some don't like his looks. Some people just gallop with the RedCafe herd. Some get right out in front, in very ugly ways, including the poster who wished injury on Rooney in the match thread yesterday after hearing Jose's first line-up of the Premiership. For me, Carrick and Rooney are very special, not just as fine footballers, but as ties between the fast-changing present and the traditions of the past. Great to see him play well yesterday and score the second goal. Respect to those who support our captain and support our team.

I thought we were very good. Tricky opening day away fixture, I don't think you could really ask for more.

It is genuinely ridiculous. The levels into Roonte's inferno that some users are and they just continue to dig with hyperbolic comment after hyperbolic comment and then lash out when people claim it to be bizarre. I just don't know what it would be like to experience football through their psyche. Just weird stuff.

What a game that was! Shows you that when you don't have technical perfection, ie. we were quite rusty and it shows that we're probably a month back of a proper pre-season just pure adrenaline and desire can get you over the line. Not a single person can come away from that game with scorn. Everybody was equally rusty with some bad touches here and there but the desire to win the ball and to work off it was right there from the get go. Ibrahimovic, wow the guy is a madman. That header attempt set the tone he ran in and absolutely walloped a couple of blokes!! LUNATIC!!

Bailly was proper hard and Fellaini looks like a genuinely top level player in the anchor role (it is his natural role afterall) and I think he could definitely be the defensive pin this season. Carrick to step in and run over the fodder.

Looking forward to Friday! A few wines and my first live game of the season! BRING IT!

Really? City were pretty dire. They could only manage a penalty and a freak own goal against relegation fodder.

Liverpool looked great second half but it was at the expense of leaving gaping holes all over the field.

With the exception of our Captain we looked dangerous once we woke up.

City were pretty dire in my opinion. It was like watching us last year.

Was lucky enough to miss the match live (sounds strange, eh? But read on!). Unlike a lot of previous seasons I'm no longer prepared to put my life on hold for Manchester United. Doesn't make me less of a fan or anything … while we were out (having a great time visiting friends and attending a good old fashioned orgy) I was itching to know how we were doing but knowing that I could watch the game any time I wanted later (in full HD) on FM&S was a relief … I just had to give the GF my phone for 7 hours or someone, or some App, would have twittered a spoiler (so no pics of the orgy fellas, sorry)!

When I finally watched it (the match) here in Germany, at around midnight (CEST), I realised something … other than the two(ish) games a season I try to attend, I've been missing about 60-70% of each match I view remotely because I'm contributing to the Match Day thread. It was SO nice to watch a FULL game uninterrupted and form and make my own opinions … then to watch the MOTD2 coverage without dipping in to the CAF. What is strange is that I did not feel or hear even the slightest hint of anti-Rooney venom (even though I admit; he didn't have the best game yesterday I feel he's still got a lot to offer as a senior player and a mentor. He'll very probably soon become a club legend with his goal scoring record whether we like it or not but I feel it's such a pity that today's fans will never hold him in the same esteem as other greats (this is for another thread perhaps). It's inevitable that he'll probably be used as a squad player moving forward which I have no problem with, as long as he's happy with the situation.

I enjoyed the game immensely, I'm really looking forward to what the finished article will look like with Jose at the helm … admittedly with one eye looking over my shoulder at Kloop's 'pool (surprisingly a hell of a lot more than one eye looking forward at Pep's City).

BUT I don't think I'll be participating the MD thread again, at least, not any time soon.

Congrats on the successful orgy; nothing worse (I hear) that a good one gone bad. I was working and watched most of the match later. While it was on I followed a bit on the Guardian site and in here, hence I read nearly every comment. Made me grateful that there is more to the Caf than the Match Day Thread (for instance, the Pogba thread was hilarious and mostly pleasant), and I think I will be following you in staying away. Probably. The part I still enjoy in the MDT, even still, is when we score with all the wild abandon and keyboard chaos that ensues.

I could go on but you get "the picture". Like climate change things go in cycles, eventually all communication between humans will end up as emojis and, let's face it, hieroglyphics never solved all the problems for the Egyptians did it … the aliens fecked off and left us with BREXIT and Trump!

Abso fecking luuuutely.

What I have been saying for a while; we always had a great team but Gaal did not know how to play football with them. We just needed a couple of additions to the spine of our team and I can really see us challenging for the title. I think Next season we will win it, this year we should get top 3!

My only negative is the usual, Rooney. Finished as a top player and how he is still selected bemuses me. I was impressed with Fellaini, looked controlled, he could be a very useful squad player. I want to see more of Miki, hopefully after some more mins we will see more of him. I think he, Ibra and Pogba will bring a key threat we have missed for many many years.

Although I still don't agree with the fee of Pogba, glad someone has been brought to replace the mantle that Rooney never seems to let go of. Build this team around Pogba, Martial and Bailley!

Think you're wrong on one of those choices – the beautiful one's going nowhere (unless he's moved slightly forward) Blind has got a far too clever football brain not to be included.
While that's how I would pick the team too, I was going more of a hypothetical line up that would show off our new physicality. And anyway, what if Blind is injured/suspended one day?

  • Never been happier that De Gea had a meh game
  • The center backs were like a brick wall
  • Shaw and Valencia added a lot of width
  • Fellaini was damn near perfect for us
  • Herrera took a while but he got going and did well
  • Rooney was very very average
  • Zlatan was Zlatan
  • Martial took a while but started doing his thing
  • Mata was pretty good
The footy was far better and we still have plenty to add in our team too

Rooney adds a lot of width too........

Good win. Three points against a poor team. Move on, with a team laden with potential.

Fellaini was fantastic.
Zlatan is fitting in very well.
Bailly is an excellent signing.
Valencia and Blind continue their cracking run of form.
Can't wait to see Lingard back.
With Pogba and Smalling coming in we're beginning to shape up well.
Jose has been really smart in the way he's moulding this squad. He's stuck with players many of you would've sent packing, and made smart signings even I was dubious about at first.

Great post (especially about Wazza)! I hope you could be correct about Fellaini, that would blow many Caf minds.
