utterly disagree, from about the the 70th minute our midfield basically sat in front of hour defence and even when we did attack is was never in numbers always just 2 o r 3 players while everyone else held their defensive position.

Its a typical Mourinho tactic, if your in the lead round the 70 min mark, shut the game down.

We are not a barcelona or a pep guardiola side , to always play a high line and get exposed solely because of being stubborn. Counter attack is a very effecient way of scoring goals , still we dint drop very deep but hold the play in midfeild to counter from the midfeild itself.

Its not a higher level to idiotically play the same way for 90 mins making it predictable and easy to plan against.

That comment confused me too. Maybe he's talking about who gets to wear red?
There's always a home team and an away team in finals, too, even though it's at a neutral venue. And yeah, it's pretty much irrelevant apart from who gets to wear their home kit.

thiers a difference between changing the way you attack and obviously changing the way your team is set up so that the main priority is holding on to your lead, rather then adding to it.

whether you think that is a good thing or a bad thing, that is what Mourinho is famous for doing, get a lead then about the 70 min mark shut the game down. that is what he did last night, very effectively.

Yeah it was a very typical Mourinho away performance. I have no problem with that in a European semi-final in Spain, to be honest. It would be nice if we could expect some good football at home in the return leg but at this point our usual 0-0 or 1-1 is okay I suppose.

Mixed night really. The result is good, but, in the context of the game, we can be disappointed that it's not much more emphatic. Looks like another two injuries (Young & Rashford), neither of which we can really afford if we want to rest players for the second leg. Delighted to have Pogba back.
If Rashford was really injured Jose wouldn't have held back substituting him so he could waste more time.
They knew what we were doing. That's why they got so angry about it.

Solid performance and the perfect example of just what Pogba brings to the side, cant believe the negativity around him through the season. Blind was also impressive, hopefully he keeps his place now Smalling and Jones are coming back, hes earnt it and brings more calmness to the back line than either of them. Fellaini just looks lost 90% of the time, hes never where he should be.

We had the chance to finish this tie by scoring 4-5 goals and rest key players in the 2nd leg. Our finishing will cost us I'm afraid, we already lost top 4 because of bad finishing, I hope the same thing doesn't happen in the EL.

Our Europa League run in numbers:

13 games played

9 wins
2 draws
2 losses

22 goals scored
7 against

58.7% possesion

Top scorer: Ibrahimovic/Mkhitaryan 5
Most assists: Ibrahimovic/Rooney 3
Most passes completed: Pogba 809
Most consistent player (whoscored.com): Pogba 7.8 rating

Hardly any teams score 4 or 5 goals in European ties. Chances will always be missed. But there is no point in resting players for the second leg if, as you stated 'we already lost top 4....'. Doesn't make sense.

Ajax scored 4. Real, PSG, Barcelona all have scored lots of goals in CL which is also an European competition. It makes sense when you think about injuries, any key player could get injured in the 2nd leg. What if Pogba or Rashford or one of our defenders get a red card?

Can we wear the home kit in the final provided we finish the job in the second leg ? Ajax only have the red patch on the front right ?

I would love for us to win a final in the white kit.

I seriously doubt we'd be allowed to wear the red kit and there may even be a doubt as to whether the white kit would be ok as the Ajax tops have both colours showing in large sections.

I'd read on here that the new black kit could be released before the end of the season, if this is the case then I would imagine that this would be the one that would be worn.

All hypothetical right now though, need to get through this second leg first!

I also think that jose in such situations prefers players not to burn themselves out and miss important upcoming epl game especially when the squad is so thin.

It was not typical mourinho, no. Before united mourinho's teams always played on counter attack for 90 mins defending deep without holding the ball so much in the game. Still we dint sit too deep after we scored , we holded the midfeild and countered from the midfeild.

the cynisism towards mourinho is a disgrace.

Would be easier to instruct Ajax to wear their away one, as you mentioned both of our kit clash with their home colours like you mentioned.

That would happen in the event of us only having two kits, but as we have the option of the blue one and a possible new black one then I think that would be used.

But yeah, it is possible that due to clashes Ajax would have to wear their black away kit.

Let's wait and see if we actually get to the final first...

Can Manchester United stop Man City from qualifying for Champions League?
Man Utd news includes the answer to the question of whether Man City could miss out on Champions League football if Jose Mourinho wins the Europa League.

Sevilla didn't have to go through playoff, so surely this article is bollocks. Sevilla didn't win EL and also finished in CL qualifying place.
Am I misunderstanding the article?

A playoff isn't a CL place, it's a game to qualify for the CL which winning the EL provides anyway.
Also isn't the EL winner in pot 1? Do pot 1 sides go through qualifying stages?

Not sure. Sevilla finished 7th, so wouldn't have got into CL with their league position, sure they didn't have to go through any qualifying rounds.

Unfortunately not.

But it looks like we have enough ranking points because of this years run in the Europa league to make pot 2.

The UEFA Europa League winners enter in the group stage if the UEFA Champions League winners qualify directly for the UEFA Champions League group stage via their domestic league programme. This is what happened the past two seasons after success for Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Europa League winners in both campaigns were Sevilla."

Unless Real Madrid end up 4th or Juventus 3rd(Highly unlikely) then we would go straight to the group stagess.

Hi guys,

I am reading Celta's forum (post match) and since I am spanish I can tell you more or less what's their opinion after the game. Basically I can find two different kinds of opinions:
  • Fans who are accepting that yesterday we were better than them (stronger, faster and with clear ideas) and we should have scored 2/3 goals. They give credit to their keeper (Sergio) and they're saying that in midfield we were really strong (Pogba and Fellaini were superb).
  • Fans who are saying we played rubbish but we were still the better team. These fans are stating we are not good enough for being Manchester United but we were still better than them.
What they have in common those fans? They still believe they can win in Manchester.

Cheers guys and let's get through the final asap!

Happy with that. Professional away performance, fairly solid defensively bar the occasional blip and controlled the game. Pogba was very good indeed. Mkhitaryan was pretty disappointing and Rashford's goal was brilliant.

0-2 would've been perfect as it'd have more or less killed the tie last night but I'm confident we will win at home.

Celta were very underwhelming.

seriosuly, Mourinho is famous for getting leads shutting down games in the second half of games...... this is not cynisism, this is just what he does, it's not nessicairly a good thing or a bad thing, its a tactic he has used throughout his career to help the teams he has managed be very successful.

Should have won by more than 1-0, seriously Mikis conversion rate is shocking. (don't care what stats are presented to prove otherwise to save someone the bother) for someone who seems to score every round he misses some glorious chances.

Any specific reason? Something historically significant I'm missing?

Because we've lost two finals against Barca playing in white and it looks like the white kit brings bad luck.

Despite the unfounded ramblings of some in the build up, another solid performance and a clean sheet to boot for Romero. Made a really smart save too from the deflected shot which looked easy but in reality his balance had to be perfect. That's 10 clean sheets in 15 starts now, but apparently Jose's taking a 'risk' by playing him
