EL W Europa League Round of 32 - 2nd Leg

Manchester United 5:0 Club Brugge

Post-match discussion

I spent far too long during the game trying to work it out... And I came to the conclusion that he had to be seeing how likely Migs was to saving it

I think if he figured that he'd probably save it he'd have given a yellow

I am guessing that he was looking at whether the shot was on target. Even if GK could save it, that’s still considered as denying goal scoring chance I would think. But if the shot was off target then it wouldn’t be.

The Guardian YTS counter obviously had something better to do on the night so it's defaulted to 50:50.

It was a 68:32 match if ever I saw one.

FotMob has it down as 66.8% to 33.2%. As far as I know, they use Opta stats.

Saveable or not it's still a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The only reason he stayed so long was to make it look like he was thinking about overturning his on field decision, which was never going to happen.

The ref likely regarded the decision to have him view it again as ridiculous as we did.

Talking of score predictions, is this BestRed geezer part of some Malaysian syndicate?

even if the keeper was going to save that shot, it's still a red card isn't it?

can't understand why the ref took forever on that

Obviously not talking about injuries , but are we much fitter this season? We seem much fitter this season

March a year ago we were dead on our feet from 60 min onwards, yesterday we seemed full of energy from start to finish
We are. I think we will be even better at that next season.

Very happy with the performance, so many positives:

- I like the look of Bailly and Maguire. Fullbacks solid defensively too.
- Got to have McT back. Him, Fred and Bruno looks like a solid 3.
- Burno sensational as he has been every game he's played. Great to watch him and Mata.

On another note, i dont really see it with Chong. Donno what the people who watch the academy regularly think, but i really don't see him making it here.

Was very anxious about the game going in, could see it being a banana skin. (Hello Arsenal).

But anyway Brugge trying to play with 2 goalkeepers ensured a pretty straightforward evening thankfully. Bruno is class. Great to see McTominay back as well.

I'm not going to get too excited over crushing an inferior team playing with 10 men at Old Trafford. I'm excited about the Bruno signing of course and how he's started but I'll continue to be cautiously optimistic moving forward.

Mata was the big surprise for me though. He actually looked very good, had excellent movement and superb technique. Looked like the clock had rewound about 6 years on him.

This is wrong. While I'm not a fan of the "eye test", there's little debte that Brugge had the ball very little yesterday.

BBC reports.. and other stat pages put the possession metric to 66-67% v 33 - 34%

28 Shot attempts 10 Shots on goal

Second half in particular, even though the foot came off a bit, it was just a one way street. Romero probably had time to walk out the stadium to grab a hotdog at times

Last two games he's looked like that was on his mind though.

Need DDG back in goal for the big matches if we draw a good side.

Pretty sure I have seen their Goal Keeper in the Premier League, I have seen him walk besides Brendan

Very enjoyable watch and a brilliant result. First half we were actually exciting to watch. Second half was quite sloppy but the intent was still there. Bruno is a real player, isn't he - feel very good about that signing. As much as I'm not a fan of Mata, him/Bruno's linkup play was a pleasure to watch.

Hoping for an easier draw again, the more rounds we can ease through the better.

Great result, great performance.

Alot of people saying its Brugge, go watch the highlights of the away leg and you will realise why.

People saying the red card was massive, yes it was and it always is but lets be honest we looked threatening well before the penalty.

We played good football before that too.

Great result and performance. Such an incredibly bad decision by their lad to make that save. What must his teammates have been thinking. Baffling.

Bruno is mint. He's looking like exactly what we need against these kind of teams who we should be beating. And dare I say himself and Mata might dovetail nicely?

Ighalo led the line beautifully. Didn't know about his sister, very sad. Delighted for him to get his goal.

Where are all the morons who were complaining about the team selection last week? Rotated players and breezed into the next round. Job perfectly done.

Would like Mata to get a run with somebody else who can play. A long time since we had a sharp mind for him to play with. Has the tools to produce the touch to finish physical sides like Everton.

Having more of the ball will do that for you.

Under Jose we rarely had the ball, especially for sustained periods. Ole's fitness work in pre season has definitely helped, but our ability to win the ball back quickly and recycle it has improved immensely.

It helps also that we've now got more naturally fit players in Fred/Bruno/Mctominay in the engine room, AWB looking sharp and Shaw looks like he's got his fitness back to how it used to be.

I've just watched the game on MUTV. Good game by United. I really liked Greenwood's entrance, he's such a mature player and his decision making is so impressive from such a young boy. Very good game in general from everyone really. One thing though. Paddy Crerand, is he the worst expert ever? I think so. He was babbling about the VAR-decision for 45 minutes and he could not get into his brain that they were not looking if it was handball, they were looking if it was a red card and if the ball would've gone outside the post or inside. Then he changed his mind, and was thinking that it was offside on Mata - who wasn't even interfering with play - but then Stewart Gardner had to step into his nonsense. Also, he named Stewart by name 96 times during 96 minutes. Yes, I counted. Why does he do that? I would go crazy hearing my name so many times all the time. I walked on the street the other day here in Sweden. I overheard two guys talking, out of context the other guy said: "Stop saying my fecking name all the time, what do you want?" Back to topic: Luke Shaw, Fred, and Maguire have really stepped up recently. And Bruno Fernandes! Wow. Better than I expected, and I must say that I had quite high expectations.

Bruno made everyone play like they are world class.

Tottenham fans must be wondering why they didn't complete the deal last season while Arsenal fans must be wondering what their scouts are doing.

We could've scored 3 goals before the red card. We were all over them. Fantastic performance.

I'd love to hear a ref's take on it, because I can't see him a) taking so long to just "appear to be thinking" or b) seeing if it was going off target (it obviously isn't).

This is the law:

SENDING-OFF OFFENCES

A player, substitute or substituted player who commits any of the following offences is sent off:
  • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence (except a goalkeeper within their penalty area)

In my mind, the goalscoring opportunity is the actual strike itself... which has been taken so the handball isn't denying that. So the red card comes down to whether or not it's denying a goal. And as there wasn't an conclusive evidence that Migs would save it, then it has to be a red.

If the shot was going straight down Migs throat, or there was a player stood directly in line with where the ball was going, then I think it would become a yellow card.

I'm no ref though, so who knows.

It’s interesting though. A ref can never predict stuff like whether a keeper will save a shot even if it’s going straight down his throat. That is why I feel shot on target would be a more objective way to determine as “opportunity” to score. Takes the subjectivity or goalkeeper’s ability out if it.

The commentator on my stream must have been a Pool fan. Every ten minutes he kept repeating about the player being sent off and not being sure if Ming the merciless would have saved the shot therefore it wasn’t a clear and obvious goal scoring opportunity.

I felt certain he was going to overturn the red after seeing the replay, and initially thought it was harsh.

However, after seeing it again I think it was the right decision. The keeper might have saved it, but we saw him drop a fair few clangers playing in the PL to know it wasn't a foregone conclusion.

I think that above all it was the way that he stopped the ball. Diving and punching it away like that, and after its travelled some distance already, is inexcusable and shouldn't be condoned at all. If a player tries to block a shot with their body and it hits their arm, but it's down by their side, then a penalty and a yellow card would be fair.

It was an idiotic thing to do and only has himself to blame.

Also, on the BT coverage they made a big deal about the Maguire arm across the Bruge player before we scored but he had lost possession of the ball well before he put his arm on him, and went down so easily when he felt it that it would have been really harsh.

I'd be interested to know why one or two people voted Chong as MOTM. I think for the most part it was the same as always for him where he got a fair bit of the ball and had a go but everything he tried didn't come off. To his credit he stuck at it and got himself an assist at the end, but there's no universe in which he was our best player.

They're probably taking the piss.
