FA W FA Cup Fourth Round

Derby County 1:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Fri, 29 January 2016

I must have watched a different match.

I still thought it was shite, boring and the scoreline was flattering.
Fair enough about you being bored but is this serious? They were lucky to get a goal and we could have scored 6.

It's interesting how he always insists that the players have total freedom.

Cheers:
  • The kids are alright. Promising signs from CBJ and Varela. And the one I assume is a nailed on future star, Martial.
Jeers:
  • Schneiderlin looks in need of a restart. I vote we add to our French contingent in the summer to ease his mind, re: Greizeman & Laporte.

All Woody has to do to make the 16/17 season a successful one -- legitimate run for the prem trophy and a respectable QF run in the CL -- is the following:

Upgrade Louis with Jose. Pep would be great too, but I doubt that's realistic.

Add Laporte. Rojo, Jones and McNair are all the depth we could realistically need.

Add Greizmann. This probably means the end of Mata, but Greizmann would be a massive upgrade on Mata.

There's no sense in dreaming about Rooney being sold to a Chinese club.

Happy with a win but LVG should be sacked for not having used one of Memphis, Januzaj and Peireira in this match!! What do they need to do to get a chance when the players infront of them in the starting haven't been good last few weeks/months.

Had to nip out around the time Blind scored but generally it looked more of the same to me.

Boring to watch but a few good moments to win the game.

Midfield is non existent at times as an attacking force.

Then people stepping on side of these clowncunts, they have everything what they need (facts wise like stats etc.) to drop on him,yet they laugh and ask things about fecking wine...

Job done, that's about it. Lovely goal from Rooney. We've been here before though, we need to string a run of results together, but at least we have some respite from the usual post match stench.....

Just watched the game. Was really frustrated with Lingard in the first half. He had acres of space on the wing in advanced positions and did not exploit it at all. I felt we were too compact until the game started to open up in the second half. Derby was perfectly content with us having possession and once they started pressing it showed how vulnerable we are.

Happy with the result. Same shit football. It was Derby. We're not going on a run of games and will probably struggle against Stoke if we play the same way we did tonight. Disappointed that Memphis and Januzaj didn't come on.

Classic cup game. We started, they took over but missed a few chances which might have turned the game. We took our chances but the scoreline flatters us. A couple of time they burst through our defence and Smalling is still wrestling players at corners. Morgen had a dreadful game but Varela and CBJ looked pretty good. Quite happy, Juan nearly played to the whistle kicking away. LVG survives until the end of the season - plenty of time to win the league!!:)

Liked his response to the freedom question at 00:30.

Not sure about the Martial stuff. I think he was still pissed Martial hit that shot over the bar after 3 minutes.

It's interesting how he always insists that the players have total freedom.
He didn't say total freedom. Just that they had as much freedom in this game as they usually do.

I happen to agree. I didn't see much difference between this game and previous games in terms freedom but it felt like the players were braver today with their passing and had more intent with their movement. They seemed more willing to try stuff than usual (Rooneys curler for the goal, Blind running from deep, some of the link up play between Mata and Martial).

Maybe Ed should start giving LVG a bottle of wine after every win, instead of just against the top 6.

That's why our record is so good against the top teams.

They're rubbish, obviously, but we were much better than we have been recently. Full backs making incisive passes, Martial beating men again and Blind bizarrely popping up in the box! Seemed like players felt a little more free to take gambles. Hopefully that's a tactical change rather than just a sign of the opposition's quality.

Good result today and some decent performances. Martial was a right handful today only let down by his final touch. Solid performances by Rooney, Blind and Lingard. CBJ and Varela deserve more game time on their performances today. I'd be happy consigning Darmian and Jones to the sidelines for a while (injured anyway). Can someone PLEASE tell Smalling to fecking cut out the shirt pulling from his game. Really hacks me off!

Best performance of the night goes to the United fans...awesome work guys!

He came across well in the post-match press conference. They ask stupid questions, constantly trying to stir.

We were shite. Reading his press conference as we played Barca style footie of freedom. Derby could and should have been 2:1 in the beginning of second half. Midfield was abysmal. The score flatters us.

Decent win. Exciting to see Martial, every time he got the ball. Exciting to see goals like Rooney's again. All in all better than recent weeks. Varela was great too.

Run of the mill United performance for this season, only difference is we played a weak team that allowed us to do what we wanted going forward. Looked like they'd done no homework on us as they left their fullback isolated against Martial.

It'll be back to normal at some point in the next two games when we will drop points.

I have been saying it for a while now, for this system to work you need two Luke Shaws..
I am not arguing it's the perfect system or the best the team can do. All am saying is every time the fullbacks put in a good attacking shift the team tends to look/play better.
Thought Fellaini in comparison to his recent games, he had a very good game today. Morgan played the 1st half like a stoner. Mata kept going even when things weren't going his way. Lingard was not outstanding but he worked hard for the team. Finally Smalling and Blind at it again, defending one vs ones very well but keep allowing themself to be dragged all over the pitch.

Not a game to judge anything by. This was against a team 5th in the Championship and on a horrible run of form.

We were quite good, Derby were the poorest and least ambitious home team we've played this season, 2 of the goals should have been disallowed for offside, Martial was the best player on the field, the full backs performed encouragingly, Fellaini was OK, the Schneid needs to pull his socks up, someone else should be getting games instead of Lingard, and tomorrow is another day.

Not even giving them sub appearances though? I would be surprised if Pereira is still here come next season, simply because Van Gaal isn't giving him any chances. And nobody could blame him for leaving, as he should be playing a lot more. Even 10 minutes at the end of the game when we're 2 up is better then nothing. How the feck are Memphis, Januzaj and Pereira supposed to develop when they're opportunities are so limited, yet randomly get game time in bad situations for them.
Seriously, the game was never truly safe till United went 3 up late on even though we played well. There was no chance of him taking risks in his current situation. These lads inevitably will get games when the manager isnt so desperate for results like he was last night. Last night isnt one that should tick anyone off on that topic.

Win is a win and most important thing is, the way we passed the ball around it was much quicker and no one was holding it for too long, why not we play it in similar fashion for rest of the season.

Let's not get carried away here about how well we played. Derby are 5th in the Championship and on a terrible run of form. The Stoke game will be a truer measure of whether we're improving.

A very entertaining game for once. Both the young full backs had very good games and looked confident on the ball. Martial added the penetration that we've been lacking. Seeing Blind bombing forward for that goal just showed what we're missing when you take a risk and it paid off. Safe for now LVG but it was Derby.

Signing them two would be something special. Would add some good chemistry in the team. As much as I like Blind we need a proper centre back and Greizmann is something special right now.

Ok performance, we were allowed too much space in attacks, which is why we ended up winning. We played a Derby team without a win in 5 games, they also played away at Burnley Monday night, so they were 100% and that worked in our favour.

I expect us to go back to boring on Tuesday night though and I wouldn't be surprised, if we played 5 at the back.

I thought we were pretty average. Poor decision making, too many sloppy passes and the proverbial knife through butter for their goal.

Nevertheless a good win but perhaps an indication of just how low we have fallen that some are content with what we saw last night.

Happy we won and won well but its clear that Derby were crap and looked extremely tired towards the end of the game. We moved it around well and dominated which was very positive but let's replicate it in the prem before we start going mad.

Good performance, very enjoyable to watch. Varela was great I though. If he can perform like that consistently we have ourselves a new RB. BoJack was also good and not much more needs to be said about Martial except his potential is frightening.

Schneiderlin struggled again and continues to disappoint after the hype in the summer. Hopefully Carrick coming back can help him.

The anti-LvG brigade is getting on my tits a bit though. Shearer & Savage seemed gutted and journalists like Ladyman on Twitter having a pop. As poor as Van Gaal has been, I'd bloody love it if he somehow turned it all around. There'd be some seriously upset people in the media.
