Post-match discussion

Good performance and I really enjoyed the game which I haven't said for a long time. Ok it was against a Championship side struggling for form but even when they got their equaliser we didn't let our heads drop and managed to get the win.

The fans were terrific last night and it made me feel very proud to be a United fan.

We beat what was in front of us, which was a Championship team recently struggling for form, pleased with how we played most of the time, happy we won, and we could have scored more.

But I dont see it as a new dawn, and have no more confidence in the
"System" or "Philosophy" than I had before.

I'm one of LVGs biggest detractors on here but that was the result I expected. Decent performance, but tempered by the fact that Derby aren't great.

Maya didn't give up, martial was exciting, Rooney rolled back the years with that goal, the young fullbacks were good.

Schneiderlin was poor but then again his main partner fellaini didn't show any positional restraint. People cry about Rooney but Jesus how does this guy get anywhere near the United first team? Ship to Milan if they're that silly!

I hate to be the type who moans even after wins, but that performance, while an improvement in some areas on recent ones, was still a pretty poor one. And I didn't really like the lineup and his subs/non-subs. For all the talk of his trust in youth, it's largely been forced on him, while he's found little to no game time for our most talented youngsters, even when he's winning against a poor championship side. Still, we got a fairly comfortable win anyway, so hopefully this lifts the mood and confidence of the squad.

Good performance, very enjoyable to watch. Varela was great I though. If he can perform like that consistently we have ourselves a new RB. BoJack was also good and not much more needs to be said about Martial except his potential is frightening.

Schneiderlin struggled again and continues to disappoint after the hype in the summer. Hopefully Carrick coming back can help him.

The anti-LvG brigade is getting on my tits a bit though. Shearer & Savage seemed gutted and journalists like Ladyman on Twitter having a pop. As poor as Van Gaal has been, I'd bloody love it if he somehow turned it all around. There'd be some seriously upset people in the media.
Me too. But unfortunately we still seem a long way from that. What we need is consistency. i'm at a loss as to why we can't seem to achieve that from the coaching team and the players. Again it comes down to mentality. Hate to say it but we play as a team like Rooney - inconsistent. Need some blood and guts from all parties. Change the mindset of the players by any means - once you get out on the pitch - you should have nothing in your mind and hearts except putting the opposition to the sword. Properly channelled aggression is sorely needed imo.

Blame LvG for the lack of positional restraint. By now it should be clear Fellaini has been instructed to push up front and roam around there. Otherwise, with LvG's personality and demands (anecdotes of him hauling players off because they didn't listen to his instructions.. even if they played brilliantly) he wouldn't be playing so often.

Yeah, I've also felt for a long time now that this Utd team is just a bit too nice. We need a bit of dog in there. Even someone like Costa. This has actually surprised me, as I thought one thing Van Gaal would bring was fight.

I know. Everyone seems paralysed with fear. I know it stems from us falling off so bad since SAF retired, and catching up is occupying everyone at the club. Coupled with all the possible behind the scenes politics, leaks, the press and their relentless campaign - I can see why all this would trickle down and affect the team. Now we've got fans booing and such (fans are entitled to express themselves) - but there's no question the confidence levels go down even more at Old Trafford when this happens. Note - not blaming the fans, but objectively, it does have a negative effect on our very 'soft' minded team...

I get all this makes it a bad situation for coaching staff and players - but they have to find a way around that. LVG has charisma and fight, but the job and everything that comes with it seems to have broken someone like him with experience and such self-confidence - it is a major surprise that even he seems paralysed to use his supposed strengths.

Still think though if we had at least two more members of the team with that kick ass mentality - we'd have been better off. It's not easy, but your mentality in sports is half of the battle and you cannot neglect that aspect - which I feel the coaching team is not addressing fully imo.

They certainly weren't playing in their 'zones' or whatever that's called. Blind doesn't score that goal and Smalling isn't charging all over the place if they were. Some individual instinct, risk and guile shown by Blind there that's been sorely missed.

Why did he have to underplay Martial's performance? What's wrong with saying yeah the kid had an awesome game?
He did praise him. Said he didn't perform well in the first 20 minutes but after that he was great (or whatever word he used). LVG is pedantic and exact. You played well in some aspects but not others. That's fine with me. Too much praise and the player never thinks they have to improve anything. I'm fine with that. Martial's young, we don't want him getting carried away. The kid will win all the major accolades - no question about that. But, if he doesn't continue working hard he won't make it, regardless of his talent. So good to keep him grounded.

We did in this game what we should have been doing for ages now: passing quickly, moving off the ball and supporting the player in possession by giving him options other than backwards. The result was we were more effective and entertaining.

It will be harder to do it against a better side or to do it regularly and I have no confidence that we will be able or even willing to under LVG.

This.
Burnley beat Derby 4-1 last Saturday. Perspective.

I liked what I saw yesterday. Solid play overall, a few moments of brilliance. A fully deserved win over a mediocre club, but one that made us work for it.

The only issue, and I know it's my problem, is that I can no longer stand the sight of Van Gaal. We score three sweet goals and he sits there like a robot. That pisses me off. Sit and take notes, fine. But at least celebrate goals.

You mean to say that the partial incline off his chair, single fist pump followed by going back to his notebook musings is not sufficient for you? :p

Some of the overly optimistic reaction to this result is a tad disturbing to be honest. A sign of the times I guess.
Similar to when some thought we could challenge for the title after the Liverpool game, will most likely be brought back down to earth on Tuesday night.

If it's a match winner in stoppage time, sure.

But even just standing up expressing approval in some way would be good enough for me. Positive reinforcement is an easy, powerful tool in motivating your employees!

Bit harsh. 30% of the team were youth. It would have been pointless and risky bringing on another youth in midfield, e,g, Andreas when we were not dominant in midfield. Imo Andreas has yet to take his chance. He needs to put in something extra that LVG sees, because Lingard did. LVG could also have used McNair but chose to reward Varela which worked well.
If Martial can play with freedom and composure, admitting his experience gets the best of him at times, it is hard to understand how the likes of Depay, Andreas, Adnan and others can not see what can be done, do it on the training field and then transfer it onto the park. Also what the feck is Morgan and Fellani thinking when they see a CB run into tge box and slide the ball calmly into the net. That should have been them.

He is probably thinking 'suck on that fat boy cnutis', another week, another wodge of cash, the process works if the tempo is right and another key player back. Rock n roll.

Indeed.
Any manager of any company knows this.
I think Klopp is a major advocate of positive reinforcement.
When they win games he seems to congratulate every player.

1 win against a mediocre side (IMO Derby is the worst team I have seen us play against, since Brugge - truly woeful) and some people think we have turned a corner?
We need to wait and see.

The good thing is that our next Cup tie is against a weak side, also, so we should go through to the next round fairly easily.
