EL W Europa League Round of 16 2nd Leg

Manchester United 1:0 FC Rostov

Post-match discussion

Thu, 16 March 2017

Abysmal performance but most importantly we won. We need to get out of this rut though as we've been really poor as of late.

I don't agree with the negativity on here; we didn't need a goal as long as we didn't concede. Rostov played 11 men behind the ball at all times, and we still created 3 or 4 clear cut chances. Wasn't the best performance, but we played 60 odd minutes with 10 men vs a very good Chelsea team 3 days ago. We're through the next round and still massive favourites for the whole thing jesus...

I think the last years completely broke me and lowered my standards to an unimaginable level - I enjoyed watching the game and thought that we were alright, apart from the finishing.

3 at the back was weird. Even weirder bringing on Phil Jones to play LWB when we needed a goal. Go 4 at the back and bring on an attacking player.

2 injuries is annoying, to add to the current injuries and suspensions. Impossible to predict the line-up for Boro away. Surely Shaw and Martial have to come back in? Are they both really injured or still just out of favour?

There needs to be some context for tonight - the injuries, fatigue and lack of preparation under a hectic schedule clearly affected us. Players don't always need an energy boost from bananas and Jones didn't look fully fit as he required an inhaler shortly after coming on.

Can't wait for the international break to give us a bit of a breather, assuming it does so anyway. Would be ideal to see middlesbrough roll over for us. The players deserve a pat on the back for getting the job done in an adjusted system and overcoming a couple of forced injuries. Rostov are an easier side in the competition but they aren't a rollover either.

I don't buy that as an excuse. We should never use that as an excuse, we have the funds to have a decent depth in our squad. That type of performance is unacceptable in my opinion no matter what the conditions or injuries. It's not like we were facing a decent team here and yet we beat them 2-1 over two legs.

Not good enough.

Forks out for Jose in his thread.
Strange times. We got through yet it's all this negativity tonight.

Gonna put it out there....Jones should not be a professional footballer!!!

I haven't come across a player so inept at everything, furthermore playing him alongside Bailly and Smalling is a recipe for disaster!!!

Imagine this team in the CL? We don't deserve to be there, full stop. We'd get decimated. Rostov. We played extremely cowardly at the start of the second half, and for much of it to be honest - so disappointing. First half was same old United 2016/17 - dominant, nice linkup play, poor finishing or squandering of chances.

Pogba picks up what I hope isn't a bad injury, coz we need all the bodies we can get regardless of how average those bodies are performing.

Sergio Romero - great little backup keeper. BIG fan - thats what your sub keeper should be; strong, silent type who never complains but is more than capable. Three excellent saves, basically won us the game. Well done lad. Valencia was exceptional, Herrera very good. Nobody had a poor game per se, but just nothing about us right now....

Nitty gritty now. Hoping for Genk or Anderlecht but all the remaining teams will give us a run for our money.

Echo's my sentiments. The squad is clearly tired, I have no issue with them playing within themselves in order to conserve energy.

It may not be pretty at times, but we are through, and that is ultimately what matters.

That was so weird. I was happy with Rostov but maybe in hindsight it might have been better to get a more high profile team. Oh well we got the job done in the end.

Because it's utterly stupid to ignore the terrible performance and pretend everything's rosy just because we knocked out Rostov.

Happy with the win but the team is in poor form at a very crucial part of the season. We need to play ourselves into some form

Breaking down a 5 man back-line and 4 midfielders isnt easy but I really don't like our formation tonight. Flashback from last season... Playing the wings alot but no players in the box...

It's one thing to say we had a bad game and it was bad.
But it's the other to ignore all the circumstances and yell about how it was better under LVG and other crap.

Not sure what i just watched, 5 defenders at home to an ultra defensive side, Jones at left wing back, and did we try to bring on Rashford and Young when we'd already made two subs?

Job done i guess but we could have made it so much more easier on ourselves.

Jose post-match:
"We have lots of of enemies - not Rostov"
"We'll probably lose the game on Sunday"

He seems quite annoyed.

Think he's referring to the people arranging the fixtures when he mentioned enemies.

Really like how you avoided the temptation to exaggerate :wenger:

really poor and the kind of game that makes you question Jose's decision making

can understand the 3 at the back.....when it was clear it was overkill why not change it

obvious the longer the game went on the more nervous we would be

Pogba poor before the injury, Zlatan wasteful and didn't look interested at times, the balance was not right and I felt Herrera/Mata/Mhiki were our bright spots.

the substitutions of Fellaini proved a good one - he did well enough and certainly looked better than Pogba despite his limitations. Jones at Left wing back??? what are you thinking Jose

In the end Romero made 3 fantastic saves to book our place.

really disappointing and we won't win the trophy playing like that - I liked how someone described it in the matchday thread....Rostov are relative minnows and Jose was cowardly in the tactics - making a mockery of his song

I dont agree with this post.

We dominated the first half but it was very hard to score because they had eleven men in their third. Once they started attacking it opened up the game and hence we scored. I even thought this would happen before the match started. Added to the fact that we are not fresh because we played on monday.

I thought alright he could have moved Rojo left wing back and put Jones left center back. That i agree with. But overall i thought it was a decent performance and we were unlucky not to have a few in at half time. Jose was conservative and gave Rostov respect. Look at Man City last night, they played into Monacos hand by not going defensive.

This is european knock out time which means the away goals have a huge say. I think conservative is the best way, especially away from home. And i can guarantee the quarter finals will be as nervous.

at times it felt like we were playing 5-0-5 e.g. No midfield connection whatsoever, very disjointed. The amount of times the ball was out on the wings and there was zero players in the middle was baffling

Crowd was very strange for a high tension game.

Rostov played with 9 men behind the ball 90% of the game. Not sure what anyone is expected to do against that.

Unfortunate we could not get an early breakthrough, but as soon as Rostov put men forward and temporarily left some space behind, we quickly moved the ball around and scored.

Enjoyed Romero, Rojo, Valencia, Mhki and Fellaini's performances - all did well. Pogba's injury hopefully works out as a blessing, he gets some rest and some time to think about his game.

I hope Jose rests a good few players on the next weekend before the quarter finals. We really need to be fresh.

To be honest, it's so tense at the moment, what with us in 6th place and this being a chance for us to get CL, I can understand our performances a bit in this respect. You could see the relief on our players' face. It's not so easy to deal with this constant pressure.

Let's just forget about the performance and focus on the result. This critical time of the season, results are all that matter.

Pretty uninspiring but job done I guess. Got a bit nervy towards at the end but managed to score at the right time. Lets see who get tomorrow then...

If we can somehow get into 4th place by the next tie, team will relax a lot more.

How was that any different than last years LvG performances? + another 150mill spent.

The siege mentality is in full force now. Jose is seeing the limits to this squad and is concerned we'll blow up.

DID HE REALLY SAY THAT? About the Boro game? Please tell me he didn't, even as sarcasm?

Reminds me a lot of the match against Zorya at home in the groups earlier this season actually. At home against a team we should be beating and we're scraping through while Old Trafford is completely silent.

Difficult when the team that has to score parks every player behind the ball. Tricky tie, well managed.

Not good enough.

Barcelona and Real Madrid often skim through against dogshite games. There is no side that consistently thrashes lesser opponents during a busy run of fixtures.

Always the same. Unless it's a 10-0 hammering some will never be happy! Pogba's shite, Jose ain't got a clue, crowd are wank, formation's all wrong etc., etc., etc.

But we won and we're through?

Oh I agree, but it's getting there that I'm not confident about. I was so gutted about the Bournemouth result, would have given us a bit more confidence to stay close to the top four. Anyway, onwards.
