Post-match discussion

Very impressed by Pereira - the silverlining of the game today.

I reckon we should never allow English players to take penalties again. Automatically at the back of the line in a shootout. Don't have the bottle.

Middlesbrough are still our bogey team.

Well done to them, not all too bothered to be honest but I'm concerned for Memphis.

Yea match thread has been fantastic, thanks for the fun lads, been amazing.

Back to reality though, our players are a bunch of fecking clowns, so many young/squad players there who should be playing their lungs out in order to impress yet they give 0 fecks.

Special 'idiots awards' to Memphis and Rooney, they should buy a fecking cabinet for those things as they're amassing plenty of them lately.

We created enough tonight to win easily. It was nothing to do with "philosophy" or "playing sideways" it was down to missing at least three sitters, the ref not giving at least two penalties and the bar being rattled again.

Hilarious shoot out, the 3 30 plus players miss and the 19 year old scores. Almost putting into sharp focus the people who need shifting next summer.

With leaders and experienced players like these the future is bright. Congrats to all, well done LVG.

We are so shit it's unbelievable!!!

Time for LVG to step down?

Carrick, Rooney and Depay embarrassed themselves tonight. Rest put in a shift but didn't take their chances and paid for it. Pissed off we lost a game, but not pissed off we're out the capital one cup.

We are shit at penalties. Shades of the Sunderland cup exit. Put to shame by Championship players who put them away emphatically.

We should have had 3 penalties in the game, and it still would have gone to penalties.

We're the new England when it comes to penalty shoot outs. I expected nothing else as extra time ticked away.

But this really shouldn't be an issue when given a home time against a Championship side.

Cracking match, Boro were very good and they got they luck. Was impressed with us, great to see some flair (at times) from Lingard and Pierra. It just did not go our way tonight. A bit concerned about Memphis, and nothing is happening for Rooney right now.

I feel like this thread will be really negative, and I'm actually not that bothered. We made a lot of good chances, sometimes they just don't find the net. After the first half we didn't struggle to create and find holes in their defence, we were just poor at finishing and they were very good at last ditch defending. I liked Pereira and Lingard a lot, they were often involved in our best moves.

We wanted to rest first team players and ended up playing Smalling for 120 mins, Rooney(gobshit) for 70 mins and Martial for 50 mins. Brilliant.

They created enough to win too. Probably the better chances too.
We were awful.

Also, have to say the referee was pretty awful. I didn't even think that last handball was a penalty, but he literally gave them about four free kicks when it was actually our player that was fouled

Relieved that is over. Wasnt terrible all the way through but was still pretty dire. Fellaini played well but rooney and memphis were shocking.

Not the end of the world to be out but still leaves a bitter taste losing this game.

The whole thing felt like a testimonial/legends game. With the back and forth but shit football, the calamities, the crowd, the commentator, those penalties.

Rooney is awful. His touch is as bad as it gets and he doesn't know what to do with the ball in tight spaces.

Romero has solidified his position as "ok, he can be backup, but please God don't let him ever become first team".

Martial the only real shining light.
Pereria looked promising though.
Smalling had a good game.

Probably the most entertaining United game I've seen for ages.

Not too bothered with going out. Our squad is thin enough already. But that was poor, we are even so predictable that championship teams can come and sit back a bit, and make us look like fools and not able to create anything clear cut until extra time.

We are going through this easy predictable patch again. Just too easy to defend against when we have a lot of the ball.

What I would give to never see Rooney pull on the shirt again.

That match has got to do a lot for our confidence ahead of the weekend. I actually think that was a shambles, regardless of the competition.
