A semi okay result but the performance was poor. We rely too much on Big Dave to dig us out in games. If he leaves in the summer I dread to think what will happen next year.
I hate bringing 0-0 home in a CL tie but how is a 2-1 or 3-2 loss better?
At 0-0 every win takes us into the next round, with a 2-1/3-2 loss we need to win by a two goal margin to progress unless we win 1-0 which is a very risky score by itself. They score first and we need three all of a sudden.
Losing means we have to take risk leaving our back exposed trying to get a goal. The other team would have more chance to score goal when we can't look back but push forward? If both team hold out for a stalemate, then we're to be disqualified. How can it better?
Why is it all hopeful for us to score against them at their home ground when ref let them have home advantage kicking us with little to none punishment, but all negative about our chance at our home?
Or scoring once and creating several good chances at the effing Bernabeu. Or controlling the game at the San Siro against Inter. Or winning at Stamford Bridge.Or beating Milan 3-2, Roma 2-0 or that away leg against Schalke.
Make no sense.Because one away goal nullifies another away goal so for me its always good to have at least one even if we are chasing a result at home. Now we are playing at home and the moment they score we'll be in trouble and even if we go ahead theres the looming threat of an away goal and we end up drawing and getting knocked out. Maybe i'm exaggerating or may be i'm just pissed that we couldnt put fecking Sevilla away if it were Barcelona or Madrid i'd stomach it.
Matic made the highest number of completed passes for United. He was composed and played well. Always positionally aware. A 6/7 out of 10. He seemed a little leggy at the end...
He wasn’t. You obviously didn’t watch the game.
Agreed. People will tell you all sorts of myths to justify their own thoughts. Fergie has left a shite and ageing squad despite walking the league in his final season. Fergie being a dinosaur in Europe, despite doing really well and being beaten by the Barca in their prime and cuneyt cakir.Or scoring once and creating several good chances at the effing Bernabeu. Or controlling the game at the San Siro against Inter. Or winning at Stamford Bridge.
The revisionism regarding the Fergie years is starting to grate a bit. Some happily pretend we always played shit football back then, just to avoid having to criticise Mourinho in any way.
We are playing awfully right now and have been for a while. Yesterday was just another lifeless performance in a long line of those.
I've rated N'Zonzi and Banega for many years, and whilst I think Banega is better than all of our CMs (including Pogba), I don't think N'Zonzi is better than Matic. The rest you listed, yeah. The only downside about N’Zonzi and Banega is their age. If they were both younger, they would be an excellent addition to almost any team. IMO they are better than Matic/Herrera/Fellaini/McTominay.
Qualify this - Any draw put Sevilla in QF. What about another 0-0 draw? Are you talking about the Chelsea game instead? 0-0 draw at Barca would have put Barca in the QF.
if we nick it at home, of the then 8 teams remaining, we'll be the ones everyone else wants to get.
Drawing 0-0 is the second worse type of result in an away CL game even losing 2-1 or 3-2 puts us in a better position. So the result is not ok.
Why are they tired? There was a training camp in Dubai. Our last game was on Saturday and the one before was another week before that. The team have had plenty of rest with full weeks in between games. I'm not buying this not rested issue. None of the other big teams are tired. Why is this team tired? The team just looks tired. A lot of players havent been rested enough this season and it looks like its starting to show
And that would be great if it was an isolated situation. Your typical European away performance happened versus minnows in the PL as well. It's now a staple in our menu, that's that issue. What's cringy is that you're incapable of understanding my point, which is that it's a typical European away performance. Hardly the disaster some make it out to be.![]()
Another piece of brilliance by Mou the wizard!
Just pathetic and not what a club like United should 'play' like. Think we will pay for this at the re-match as I can clearly see Sevilla score one at OT.
Dozens? I can remember Lille was one and Marseille. I can remember dozens excellent away performances with SAF. Certainly not like this.

Away from home in Europe under Fergie (last 10 years):
2012/2013: 2-1, 3-1, 0-1 - KO: 1-1.
2011/2012: 1-1, 2-0 & 1-2.
2010/2011: 1-0, 3-0, 1-0 - KO: 0-0, 1-0 & 2-0.
2009/2010: 1-0, 1-0, 3-1 - KO: 3-2 & 1-2.
2008/2009: 3-0, 1-1, 0-0 - KO: 0-0, 1-0 & 3-1.
2007/2008: 1-0, 4-2, 1-1 - KO: 1-1, 2-0 & 0-0.
2006/2007: 1-0, 0-1, 0-1 - KO: 1-0, 1-2, & 0-3.
2005/2006: 0-0, 0-1 & 1-2.
2004/2005: 2-2, 0-0, 0-3 - KO: 0-1.
2003/2004: 1-2, 1-0, 1-0 - KO: 1-2.
47 games: 22 wins - 12 draws - 13 defeats (10 of those came in the first four seasons).
20 conceded in the first 17 games; 18 in the last 30. Immense. Look at the 2010/2011 campaign.
So, losing just THREE games in his last 30 European matches away from home is fantastic. Might have changed his approach after those years, esp. after the 06/07 campaign.
Anyone remember the 0-0 away in marseille we had in the season we made it to the final?
It wasn’t always gung-ho football under sir Alex...

It just takes a couple of bad results to cause a negative goal difference. They have only scored 31 goals. Their away record in the league is 5/0/8. So they don't seem to do draws. Their defence is not great so we really should have put them under more pressure and but for some great saves from DDG we could have lost, which looking at that record would have been a bit humiliating. Their away record does give us a great chance of going through.Interesting bit is they are 5th in the table but have a negative goal differential (-4).
The Roma/Shakatar winner is going to be the one everyone wants to get.
Read something similar in the pre match thread as wellComplete and utter nonsense. Why do away goals turn rational people into idiots? Happens every year.
We played much better, more cohesive football than what we saw yesterday. No one is pretending we went away and dominated. That's the opposite extreme compared to this Sevilla game. There's plenty in between, no need to talk in extremes all the time.Yes, our record was fantastic, I am not denying that. The point is we did not set up to dominate those teams, we very often sat back and countered or nullified the opposition waiting for their mistakes. Especially in KO as in groups it's a bit easier.
This was usually not as deep as yesterday but still we were not a team that went abroad to attack for 90 minutes as people seem to remember us.
Matic is probably more technically gifted than N’Zonzi but not as athletic.I don't think N'Zonzi is better than Matic. The rest you listed, yeah.

Yeah, I can agree with both points.Matic is probably more technically gifted than N’Zonzi but not as athletic.
The midfield is definitely the strongest part of Sevilla’s team. Their attack is clueless.
What excellent European performances where we went and outplayed the opposition and won convincingly do you remember? I only really remember Roma in 2008 and Schalke in 2011 in the knockout stages from Fergie's last decade.
Lyon, Roma 07, Porto, Milan 07, Bayern, Inter were all very ordinary performances where we either drew or lost too, off the top of my head, from the last decade.
We hardly ever dominated teams away from home in Europe in Fergie's last years as manager.
