LC W League Cup Final

Southampton 2:3 Manchester United

Watching those Southampton FB's contributing so much in attack and being relatively good defensively you really have to wonder how good our side would be with proper FB's. LB especially needs sorting.
It would make one heck of a difference. He seems very torn about who should be the LB. Think that will be one place he will definitely spend money in the summer. We cannot keep chopping and changing there.

Name and shame them

what would we do without zlatan... in the grand scheme of things , its not the biggest trophy out there , but hey a win is a win

Not only did he score two goals, on the defensive side he seemed to be the only one that could clear it out of our box. He's known as a goal scorer, but his overall game is very impressive and underrated.

Said this in the match thread, their wingplay on both sides was fantastic and almost always lead to a chance. Crosses seemed to be almost perfect. The day we have a full backs who can actually cross and contribute to our attack like S'ton today the difference in our play will be clear as day

We were thoroughly outplayed, and Southampton showed the value in having proper wingers. They looked young and vibrant and we looked jaded. Probably due to their 2 week break.

Could really give a flying feck though cos we won!

I have been on Redcafe for many years. I can't recall anyone on here calling it anything other than the MM cup. I'm not surprised by the revisionism, bound to happen.
Sorry for having a point of view separate to the website I post on from time to time

Was at the game. Did Sky show Southampton fans' embarrassing, random light display? What the feck was that all about?

And if they did, please, please tell me they showed the United fans doing it when we went 3-2 up?

Yes and yes. Tyler nearly jizzed himself going on about how "magical" Southampton's was

Winning is winning when it comes to a trophy. We scored three goals.

Zlatan is exactly what we have needed post Sir Alex. Many thanks to him. Herrera is a gem as well.

How and why are people using this as an opportunity to bash Rooney?

Anyway, get the feck in. Southampton made it a great final. We weren't at our best but it's nice to know we can afford to be off the pace and still come out on top again. Important win.

He's like James Corden to me.

We were lucky to be 2:0, then I needed to go on my aunt's birthday. :D
Then I saw 2:1 at HT on livescore, then 2:2. Then I was nervous, kept checking the result every few minutes. Safe to say I was happy when I saw 3:2. Said to my wife: "Ibra scored, yeaaah". She gave me the biggest roll eyes ever.

I'm sure this is the 1st trophy of many. Jose is doing good things with this team. He wanted this job, he has it, he will work miracles with this team and new players in the summer.

Zlatan, what to say. What a fu.king winner!

Martin Tyler was awful today was so clearly anti united it hurt. The first indication was when their player went in on Herrera and got booked Neville said it was a shocker and before they'd even seen the replay Tyler was playing it down, he's a commentator not a pundit just commentate Tyler we know you hate us.

When you look back at previous success, not just for United but for any club and in any sport really, it's always said that the mark of champions is to be able to play badly and still get the result.

We were poor today, but a couple of moments of individual brilliance mean we're the team holding the trophy. Under any frustrations and concerns about the performance, we're all glad for the result.

Considering our fixture pile-up, i'll take a victory under any circumstances.

Find it strange that people say Tyler hates United. Some rival fans sometimes even say he's a closet United fan. He's a great commentator and I don't see what's wrong with giving his opinion on a matter, all commentators do it.

Champions ! - Thank goodness for Zlatan but, let's not forget some very good saves from DDG. A lot of credit needs to go to Southampton and their performance is the reason for our own poor performance. They played with energy, drive and purpose. Yes, they had the benefit of the two weeks rest but, they still needed to perform.

For us, there were a couple poor performers - none more than Rojo and truly hope that Mou gives Shaw a shot there from now till the end of the season or goes balls out in the summer to get a top LB. Changing that spot every other game, on top of changing who the left attacker means there is zero continuity.

Onwards and upwards from here.

Don't want to spoil everyone's party, but even before Southampton scored the first goal when we were 2-0 up, all I could think of is that Chelsea will rip us apart with that defense!
We've been very clumsy at the back in the last couple of games

I do agree with this.
Rojo + Jones was our best defensive partnership so far and I don't think they ever let in 2 goals. Together, they kept many clean sheets, too.
The problem is that Jones is mostly injured, so we can't expect to operate that partnership.
IMO, we need to have Rojo as the CB, with either Smalling or Baily partnering him. Rojo should not be LB - that should go to Blind.
If Jones is fit, the Rojo + Jones as the CB, would probably ensure that CFC do not score against us.

Against CFC, I would certainly not play with Smalling, because in the last CFC game, Smalling was our worst defender and by the end of the game was a nervous wreck. As a manager, it would be irresponsible to send Smalling back up against the same CFC attack which terrorised Smalling. If he does play (agaiinst CFC) and messes up again, he may need to see psychiatrist!

We bought their best one the other year. You know the lad who cost £30m......
Need to play him tho!

I assume you mean Shaw.
Read below.

Shaw is our 4th choice LB, behind Rojo, Darmian and Blind.
So, if Rojo is not allowed to play LB anymore, the job will go to either Darmian or Blind.
I must assume that Shaw is absolutely dire in training.
Furthermore, I would not rely on a player who has only played 8 good games for us, in 2.5 seasons. I know its harsh, but this is MUFC. Only the best players should be allowed to play.

Apparently it was for their owner who died

Not at our best today, but what we showed grit and determination. Absolutely thrilling game, worthy of a final

A few analyses from today:

Smalling is a liability and I have mentioned this before. He is a good defender, but not as good as people make him out to be i.e. over-rated. But, he will have games where plays out of his skin, this is infrequent however. He is mentally quite fragile and if he is having a bad first 10-15 minutes, he will end up making a costly mistake before the end of the match e.g. giving away a penalty or getting sent off.

Rojo cannot play left back, as we have seen again today. He frequently loses his man. Blind is the best at this position. Valencia is by far our best right back and is should continue to be the first name on the team sheet nowadays if he is fit.

Zlatan - absolute legend. Very economical with his game. Needs half a chance. Bang. I worry however that we are very dependent on him and if he gets injured or if he decides not to stay for another season, we are completely stuffed. Griezmann is a must for the summer. We cannot afford to have a season without a talismanic striker. I have realised now that all the title-winning teams regardless of era or club, must have a talismanic forward who bangs in minimum 25-30 goals a season. This idea of spreading the goals across the team does not work. You need an out and out striker to start the season, only then you will have a chance. If you have 2 or 3, you will have a pretty good chance of winning the champions league.

Keith Hackett (an ex official) really laying into the linesman.

It'll "haunt" (the linesman) "for eternity"..... "atrocious decision" .... "it should have been an easy decision".

What a kernob. Gets to watch it loads of times after the game THEN write some smart arse piece.

Watched live and watched back from recording..... Gabbiadini is onside but play the tape half a second (or less) and he looks offside.

As the Southampton manager said, we need TV help/TMOs.... but as an ex official (who was no great shakes himself), you'd have thought Hackett wouldn't have destroyed the poor guy - with friends like him, who needs enemies?

I was sat in line with the offside line for the Gabbiadini goal and didn't react to it as I was 99% certain it was offside. Bertrand ultimately gave the referee a decision to make with his poor positioning and it fell our way. Pretty sure the linesman flagged for him interfering and not Gabbiadini.

Thats the way I saw it.
How can you Not be interfearing with play when you are so close to the goal.

Smalling is a weak link.

Maybe we can buy their 2nd best one too, you know the one that played today. If we keep buying LB's one of them's bound to stick.

And beyond the jokes, yes Bertrand does look much better than what we currently have.

I don't think Jose is torn about the LB position. There just isn't a Manchester United quality LB on the roster. So he rotates it the spot between Rojo, Blind and Darmian.

Should be an obvious buy this summer.
