West Bromwich Albion 1:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 17 December 2017

Was only able to watch the 2nd half, that was really hard to watch. I made a new rule this season: only watch United matches.

Makes it easier to get through this shit

I enjoyed the 1st half, we were cruising. We got pressure on 2nd half but was to be expected from a team that is fighting relegation.

Some people expect us to win 4-0 in style every single game, but ain't gonna happen. Even their beloved secret love affair with Man City have struggled a couple games with 2-1 wins the last second.

What another poor performance. We were playing the Baggies not Real Madrid ffs. Second half what happened? Is it Mou's tactics or are the players that poor? Another 5/10 performance.

I think it's more the players than mourinho , without pogba we have absolutely no creativity in the middle of the park and mourinho knows it so when we go ahead the game plan is always sit deep and defend in numbers .
I just wish Rashford or martial could string some good performances together the way Sane and Sterling are for City they look so quick and lively whereas we look to amble up the pitch , so disappointing.
We desperately need another world class CM so that we can get through games if Pogba is injured and to play alongside him and Matic when all is good .
I still think that Martial and Rashford are incapable of making themselves undroppable and think there is every chance Martial will be gone in the seiner especially if we get griezman

4231 needs to be burnt at the stake.

A one hundred year old man has more control of his bladder and bowels than we do with this fecking formation.

Only down side for me is Valencia's injury, wonder if we'll play Young there from now on or maybe take a risk with Tuanzebe? (probably just wishful thinking but still)

Yeah, also the fecking bus chant from City caught on, sung by a team who had 9 players behind the ball most of the game and started with three defensive midfielders the whole fecking season.

They yelled "hoof" a few times too in those last 10 minutes, though that was their tactic for 80 minutes, lumping it to Rondon.

For having a big side we don't look very secure when defending set pieces.

That said, getting the points over the Christmas period is more important than the performance.

Its literally been our only real defensive weakness this year. We have been amazing defensively otherwise. Contrary to popular belief, we have kept out open play goals from everyone, including the mighty man citeh. If only we could improve our set piece defending then we'd probably be one of the top teams in the world defensively. Im sure Mourinho will sort it out as his early chelski teams were absolutely fantastic from setpieces on both ends.

Our form has been amazing compared to the last few years. Its comparable to the Fergie title winning teams. Just a shame that citeh are having a historic year..so far.

Alot of people too quick to judge and its not even the midway point of the season yet. Lets see where everyone is at in Jan or Feb.

3 points in a very tough period of the season, I'm happy with that. 1st half was professional 2nd not so much. Job done.

We really should only play away games that lasts 45min in total. Poor 2nd half again, but it's 3 points at the start of a busy period so definitely take it.

Why would any sane club want to sell Martial ? He may leave if he continues on been left in favor of lesser players like Lingard and Rashford .The squad of players are not far off city , the tactics and the managerial ability are and while mourinio has been a success he seems incapable of change, but things , time and tactics do

When we play 4-2-3-1, the gap between the 2 and 3 is massive. The two need to be box to box players rather than holding players. I still think 4-3-3 would be best for us.

4-3-3 probably suits our midfield players better, but it relies on Lukaku holding up the ball and bringing others in to play, which isn't really his game. Poorly thought out recruitment strategy.

So boring and predictable

I just knew that as long as we sat back we would allow them to come at us, they only needed the 1 goal to be back in the game and chase for the equaliser.

I love Jose as our Manager but you cant help to question his tactics, especially when City are playing like the good old days of United.

Been like this for ages, we play 6-0-4 essentially every game, can get away with it when Pogba is in the team as he carries the ball from further back in our own half, otherwise it’s very disjointed.

We are truly shit.

Mourinho can feck off with his park the bus football.
We had no Pogba and it was only in the last 15 minutes that we sat back. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Lukaku is forever bringing others into play, his linkup play has been very good.

I'll ignore the second half.
I watched Lukaku, Lingard and Rashford making multiple intelligent runs, in the first half, only for the ball to go back or sideways.
Without Pogba, our team looks myopic.
These millionaires are supposed to be at the zenith of their chosen field. They really are substandard.

I see the "park the bus" chant is now ours. We should keep it for the next time we play City and sing it when we're winning not away to West Brom.

Pretty much this. Mata was the main culprit for this. He takes no risks with his pass and always plays the safe sideways pass.

Lets hope we can get a very good to WC standard of CM in. Herrera offers nothing and I would sell him. Give McTomminay a run of games as he cant be any worse. Martial and Rashford seem to have hit a ceiling, as they dont seem to be getting any better. We could also do with a RW who can run beat a player and put a cross in. Mata cant run and we mainly get nothing from Valencia. Baggies had more chances than us, and this is becoming the norm now playing against even supposedly inferior opposition.

You are joking right? Were nowhere near the quality of Citys squad. The rest I agree with.

In most other seasons we would be top. City are on another planet, tactically pep is a genius and in another 20 years will go down as the best manager ever.

I'm happy with the 3 points, if you said to me at start of season we would be 3 points clear of third with a plus 20 goal difference halfway through the season I would take. We are still one year away from having the squad to win the league. We play well about 60% of the time and that's what typical champions do. Playing well 95% of the time does not happen so this season City are taking things to another level. The money they have spent on not just there squad but everything is crazy and so they have bought there position. Saying that, as a football fan there style is just incredible to watch. They press the ball at every instance and give the opposition no chance. Pure hunger and belief is winning them games something we are still lacking from our players.

2 1 away to west Brom who having a new manager, took a point from anfield a few days ago is a brilliant result. We have played 4 games in 2 weeks! Our best player out banned or injured for most the season ... credit to Jose! Winning mentality is back. At least the city players didn't have there souls ripped out by gaal and moyes. That takes time to recover from!

he should be , but perhaps he has offended lord mourinio in some way or has not paid proper homage , same as mhki who has lost his place to Lingard who should not be even on the cleaning staff at old trafford . Enjoy your days at old trafford Jose because if you think this shitttt is acceptable in the long run while city build a dynasty of tactically brilliant football you are very very much mistaken.

honestly don't understand this thinking martial flatters to deceive game after game . He has had so much game time but very rarely takes a game by the scruff of the neck the kid obviously has ability but lacks consistency and drive .
It will be such a shame if we let him go but will be his own fault he has had more than enough chances to establish himself but he obviously lacks the desire his class is sporadic at best .
He will be gone in the summer because if we get Ozil or Griezman there will be no room for him .
Sick to death of hearing about his potential Christ even Sterling is now miles ahead of him

This match was just about scraping by with 3 points, we can't really run a proper midfield without Pogba.

We really need to bring in a new high-skill midfielder to have a proper 4-3-3

According to MUTV we are only 1 point behind Arsenals invincibles at the same stage of the season
And two behind Chelsea's 95 points record season. City's form is really shitting on our improvement.

I felt United had a good first-half. United dominated possession, even if there wasn't much in the way of chances created. In the end all the possession paid off with two goals in as many shots.

Unfortunately United didn't kill the game off in the second half. The injury to Valencia, and the West From goal, really unsettled United. The defence was a mess.

Either way I am happy with the three points.

3pts is the most important thing, however, I can officially say now that I fecking hate sitting through our games when Pogba doesn't play. Two different teams, it's like night and day. That was a pretty poor performance and despite our defensive record, I personally don't think we're good enough at the back to sit deep and park the bus - almost every time we revert to this tactic, we look panicky and prone to conceding.

Valencia will be missed, this is Shaw's big chance now, Young to shift full-time to RB. No more Rojo at LB please and preferably no Darmian or Blind starting either, if we can help it.

Onto the next one.

Got the win and 3 points which is all that matters. Not an easy game and getting a win was important going into the festive period.

I thought there were some real positives, Jesse, Rom and Rashers were very good in the first half and I thought Matic did well too. I also don’t agree with the criticism of Herrera, thought he did well and kept the ball moving well, broke up the play etc, not great going forward however.

2nd half we fell apart, was a little bizarre. Onto the next one...

I see why Mourinho in big games play a cautious game. By the game we had today and in several appearances before, if teams come to us without fear we seem closer to smoke especially in our marking and recovering. When we are attacked and recover a ball we lose it very quckly.

I saw their goal coming because we stoped attacking and welcoming them by playing many passes back to defenders and De Gea. All in all well done lads for "One game at a time" tactic has paid off.

Pretty much this. Mata was the main culprit for this. He takes no risks with his pass and always plays the safe sideways pass.

Eh? Think you got your Spaniards mixed up, surely you meant to say Herrera

Great to hear our fans singing the park the bus chant. Didn't think that'd take too long to catch on.

Look forward to hearing it during more victories over the months ahead.

I have concluded that we have two fundamental problems:

1. Our midfield is extremely average. We lack creativity, initiative and bite in that middle without Paul Pogba. It's so obvious, it's blinding.

2. We are very average at playing the ball on the ground, playing from the back and keeping retention. This is due to having few real ballers and likely also due to poor training.

These two problems are the roots of every other problem we have. It's why the strong teams seem to outplay us. It's why we are under serious pressure once the likes of West Brom are about to level scores or win. I even dare say that it's why we have not yet seen, despite all his limitations, the best of Romelu Lukaku.

Another unconvincing win and another weekend of football where the media will be slating us while praising city. We really have lost our aura and you really can see a new generation of kids and players alike wanting to support or join our neighbors over in Stockport.

I’m not too sure why this whole ‘stockport’ thing is an insult? I’m from Stockport yes a few of my mates are city fans - a few are united fans. Just like anywhere else in Manchester
