Rafael

Fabio might well be the better player. He just didn't get much of an opprtunity to shine, with Paddy Evra needing minutes and us playing the entire second-half without any strikers.

Looking forward to seeing him get 90 minutes, chances are he'll be even more impressive. Long-term, I'd like to see him groomed into a left-winger. We could do with a quality left-footed young winger.

He has played a lot on the left wing apparently also.

But isn't he right footed? Initial reports that I read about Fabio & Rafael were they essentially they were both right backs, but Fabio had so much quality that he played on the left hand side.

Shocking - no one has registered a user by the name of Rafael yet.

Fabio's supposed to be the better of the two. Good times...

Fabio most likely has more ability. Having seen him score a good header and a bicycle kick, I'd be surprised if that isnt the case.

Rafael looks like he's more alert, far more solid defensively and has a better attitude with regard to imposing himself on a game - from what little I've seen of him.

Might take his twin a little longer to settle and show his true ability. Anderson didn't look up to much in his first games for us.

They showed a lot of promise in that first game, especially Rafael, seems like we've got two junior Evras on our hands

Yeah Fabio is naturally right footed but can also his use his left foot pretty well iirc. Hopefully he can get to a level like Nani.

Don't think he's ever played on the wing though.

Actually one of the things that struck me most about Fabio from the under-17 world cup games was his attitude. I've hardly ever seen a full back run a game before but Fabio did that in at least two of the matches I saw. He was the captain and it wasn't just because he had more ability than everyone else he was a real leader, he was always talking to his team mates and getting them organized, giving them encouragement etc.

I think Rafael is the better defender purely because he appears the more defensive minded of the two. Attacking players nearly ALWAYS get all the attention but saying that Rafael surprised me.

He's very attacking himself. You've got to laugh when you see a fullback running with it pass it and then move into the forwards position.

Having said all that I might be wrong :)

I read that, fabio was the captain and capable of running the show. You can see why he get's so many goals though, I just wonder why Rafael doesn't

i have never seen him play, other than youtube clips, as i missed the friendly the other day but after reading some of this thread i have no doubt in proclaiming that rafael is in fact the 5th reincarnation of jesus.

The fifth? Are you sure? I thought Paolo Wanchope was the fifth?

he was more the 4th and a half i think. though i might be wrong. i will confer with wanchope and see if he is in fact a celestial being or not.

Did Quieroz bring the twins in ?

How did United find them?
The brothers were spotted by Les Kershaw, then Academy Manager, in the summer of 2005 while playing for Fluminense in a Hong Kong youth tournament.

Also a bit more regarding the "work permit" - it has been said that they have Portuguese passports, but that doesn't quite match the words of Fergie, unless I'm reading it wrong:

"What we don't know is their game appreciation because they haven't played for a year. Their old club Fluminense didn't play them because they were joining us. Then they joined us in January (2008) but it was too late for the work permit application.

"Their 18th birthday meant we could apply through international clearance which we got only a couple of days ago. We're all delighted for the kids because they've worked so hard in training, they never miss a session and I'm really hopeful they'll do well."

Some more facts and qoutes about the twins here:

Razputin from the newbies just sent me a PM, and he made an interesting point: Rafael has already been added to the first team on manutd.com:
http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={91EA3BE2-963A-4BAB-802C-F46A0EF3FCA3}&teamid=458&page=2

Which is quite unique considering how manutd.com often take ages to update the squad profiles and how Rafael is the only one who's been added - his twin isn't on yet and neither are any of the other youngsters which has featured in the pre-season matches (Gibson, Cathcart, Possebon or Cleverly).
This could, as Razputin pointed out in the PM, indicate that we'll see Rafael feature in the first team in the very near future.

Thats great to hear.

I was surprised to be honest that it was Rafael who looked more alert and faster to the ball. A defender doesnt score so many goals in an international tournament at any level as Fabio did, by being slow to react.

I didnt catch the tournament myself, I've only seen a few of the goals he scored. But he sure displayed some great skill to finish them.

I would say that's not a real indication because martin is there and possebon isn't (he's got a chance too this season) but I think Rafael will get games.

Especially if Gary Neville struggles. We'll see if they get a game tonight. I'd fancy one or the other might

Martin is older though, he has generally been around forever and has been part of the first team before - he can't be compared to the other youngsters such as Possebon who hasn't featured in any official games - I think Martin's been on the page for a while - before pre-season even.

Martin has been on our books for sometime now, and Possebon didn't join until recently. Rafael however has only been with us a number of months and his name has been added in recent days. It has to mean something...

This is the thing I think people might be missing. Yes, his attacking runs were a great display of attitude and confidence in his ability... In fact, the only thing missing from his attacking display was he didnt whip a good cross into the box, mostly because he kept getting fouled as soon as he got into his stride. His one cross towards the box almost found its way to Tevez but it was a deflected pass from what I recall.

Whats really impressive about him is his solidarity in defence. He made lots and lots of tackles, as many as Evra in the first half. In fact the only time he came away from an attempted tackle without the ball - aside from the one time he got skinned - was when he got outmuscled. Point is he goes in with a steely tackle, as aggressive as Hargreaves or someone of that nature. He doesnt quite have the muscle to back it up yet, but he does put in a tough tackle both standing and sliding in.

Which, from this one performance suggests he's fantastically balanced. Both in attack and defence he has some outstanding potential and ability already.

I know the opposition wasnt at an amazing level, but if he performs like that game after game he will be Neville's successor and has the potential to be better than the club captain. Who could be dissappointed with that?

Bit harsh the way Rafael seems to be jumping the queue, ahead of his (by all accounts) slightly less talented brother.

But I guess them's the breaks when you're competing for a place with the divine genius that is Patrice Evra.

true but I'd only consider someone a first teamer top if they had a chance of playing. Martins played a few but I don't think he's much of a chance. It was interesting him playing up top on his own last game. He did ok but I don't think it said much for his chances though

Possebon (not sure how fergie will do it) I think will get games. I just think he seems calm in his play though Cleverly and Gibson when he's in the middle have done well

Martin is a talented player but I think he's 21 and you just never get the feeling he's going to play, least I don't anyway

It means that the administrators of the site heard SAF's comments about Rafael and figured he'll be appearing in the first team fairly shortly.

It's not like SAF is the webmaster...

No, Martin's chances of making it are getting slimmer each day, but we're only talking about the website now and how you used Martin as an argument as to why Rafael's inclusion doesn't necessarily mean anything.
Even though Martin's not a regular part of the first team, then he's still got a number and has featured in some of the games which is why he's on the page, I'd assume.

The interesting thing, and the, I think, reason for Rafael's inclusion can perhaps be found when reading his profile and the fine print at the end:
Note: Rafael has not been given the no.99 shirt. It will appear as 99 until he is assigned a Premier League squad number at the start of the season.

I doubt it was ever the plan that Rafael would get a squad number this soon after joining us, and him getting an official number is another indication imo.

It was like that for Ben Foster last season as well.

I just find it funny pogue. It's good in a way because Rafael gets maybe a bit more credit then he did before we saw him play and the expectation on Fabio, has died down a little so he can progress at a more natural rate

Fabio, I have a lot of confidence in. He did a few nice things in defense so is capable.

It's a similar squad tonight with giggs, neville etc so we'll see if Sir Alex wants to see them in front of a big crowd

Yeah, but as someone said earlier, Manutd.com are usually the caboose in terms of updating player profiles. Fergie also hinted that Gibson would stay at United at least until our midfield was at full fitness, so why isn't he included?

Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves! He's a talented lad, but turning a black guy into a white guy may be a bit of a stretch for him.

God turned water to wine...

I only think it doesn't mean anything basically because the website don't really know and certainly Sir alex wouldn't tell them. It is interesting why Fabio hasn't been added yet, I would assume because they have no idea which would indicate they've not been told.

But honestly, the juventus game tonight will be interesting. Hopefully neville gets more minutes under his belt and maybe they'll get given a short cameo.
We'll have to see but in all my years of watching United, I can't remember many times Sir Alex openly changing his mind about taking someone off.

Evra said Sir Alex said he liked the way he attacked and I think that will have made a big impression on Fergie

Well to be honest I think this is the best possible thing that could have happened. After all we heard before this that Rafael was the lesser talent and that could have had a negative impact on him as a player, but the fact he shone first means the one trailing is Fabio who already has gotten his recognition in terms of captaincy and a bunch of goals.
Plus if the supposedly less talented one is this good we got a pair of very good young players on our hands.

Precisely.

Rafael was meant to be the weakest link, the one who would struggle. Its obviousally great news that we have a player here that Sir Alex has confidence in. We all thought Anderson would only get a few games last season, look how well he turned out. Whats to say another injury to Neville and one of the usual Vidic headaches means pushing Brown into CB and giving Rafael his chance to shine.

He obviousally has guts and is hungry to play. Can't wait to see Fabio's reaction to this, he'll be on a mission to prove his ability.
