Rio Ferdinand

if I was Rio I'd tell England no

it was disrespectful to the player to suggest that someone like Martin Kelly could ever get into the squad for 'footballing reasons'

it was obvious that with the John Terry case Hodgson backed the wrong horse when omitting Rio

he's 36? we have some huge games coming up - he shouldnt be off playing qualifiers

I bet Fergie isn't pleased

36? Try 34 pal.

And telling England no is all very easy to say, but he wants to play for England so why cut his nose off to spite his face!

Go in, play well, and make the people who've left him out look utter twats.

I do think it's strange calling him up now, but it's good to see that Rio hasn't closed the door on his country.

Is it 7 United players in that squad now? Just goes to show how much of a British core we do have and long may it continue.

Video of the incident:

Every video and gif i've seen has cut off any actual dirty contact with the feet. (That first video with teh weird advertising ).

Honestly to me looked like Torres slowed up as hew as about to skip past him and he went down easily. Is there a stamp or something? Certainly didn't look like it from what I have seen. I'd be happy to backtrack and cry dirty if there is footage of actual contact.

I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about over those couple of video's and gifs..? Had a chelsea fan calling him all the dirty cnuts under the sun but it was thinly veiled branch of hate stemming from the Terry-Anton incident.

All of you moaning he's in the squad now would be going on about how much of a joke it was if he wasn't selected again.

Good for him. I'm very much with the people who think he should feck it all off and stay away from the circus but he's by far the best English centre back and deserves the call up.

Good news for Rio. His aspirations were victimized by Terry and Hodgson's mismanagement of the issue.

Not sure why Rio bothers with England to be honest, the way he's been treated in the past. The captaincy issue, being dropped for 'footballing issues' etc. I'm in the camp of him telling them to feck off.

Nice to see him selected. Though I would have preferred to see him left out again. Let him focus on United and leave England to fend for themselves. Though if he wants to play, I would let him

Sir Alex Ferguson has cast doubt on whether Rio Ferdinand will accept his England recall.

England boss Roy Hodgson ended Ferdinand's 21-month international exile by calling up the Manchester United defender for the World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Montenegro and San Marino.

But United boss Ferguson said Ferdinand's training and preparation schedule, tailored to help him cope with back and groin issues, may see him reject Hodgson's recall.

"I was as surprised as anyone when I heard that," said Ferguson of Ferdinand's England call-up.

"Obviously I'll need to speak to our doctor, but you know that we prepare Rio in certain ways. He's got certain treatments he has to go through.

"Those procedures have been the same all season, which has given him a fantastic performance level when he's played for us.

"So we have to consider that, Rio is considering that, and we'll see what the outcome is.

"We have to make sure he's okay in terms of the number of games he plays, and that's a fact of life.

"We've been doing that for two years with the lad, you know, and it's worked, the way we've detailed his training programmes to give him the treatments he needs for the various complaints he has in terms of his back and groin, and things like that.

"So far it has worked very well, so we have to look at all these things before Rio decides."

Somehow I don't think Rio feels the same way.

Yeah Rio will want to play for England but just wish he would tell them to feck off now.

Roy Hodgson is already calling for Rio & Cole to sort out their differences. Given the crappy way Rio was treated, and now this latest piece of arrogance, I'd rather Rio told Hodgson to stuff it.

All of you moaning he's in the squad now would be going on about how much of a joke it was if he wasn't selected again.
We're delighted he's been selected because it was a travesty not to select him before this.

As for actually joining the squad.....well it's understandable that opinions will differ somewhat on that point.

And if he get's injured? He don't have to do anything to make them look like utter twats

As if the reputation of International football (perhaps in this country, at least) isn't lower than it's ever been, then Ferdinand saying no to Hodgson would deliver an even bigger blow and be quite embarrassing for all involved with England.

But for his and United's good, I think he's best off without it. I still fully expect him to accept the call though.

His contract is up in the summer, would Fergie offer an ultimatum?!

Ferguson says Ferdinand will join up with England. Very good display from centre back tooday @alistairmagowan 11 minutes ago

Played very well against Reading. Nice runs at times, one of which resulted in Rooney's goal and some of those cross field balls were amazing.

Hopefully he comes back healthy from the england games.

No way Sir Alex would have agreed to let him go without assurances. He'l be carefully managed.

So he gets dropped for the racist wanker and Hodgson comes crawling back now that Terry's all but finished? He should tell them where to go.

He's pulled out of the England squad.

http://www.thefa.com/England/News/2013/squad-update-san-marino-montenegro-rio-ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has been forced to withdraw from England's forthcoming fixtures with San Marino and Montenegro.

The decision was taken following a meeting in London on Sunday evening with Rio Ferdinand and England Manager Roy Hodgson.

At the meeting, Rio confirmed he wants to continue playing for England and to be selected for the summer and autumn fixtures.

Hodgson said: "I'm disappointed Rio will not be available, but due to the detailed pre-planned training and medical programme he must follow it's not possible.

"However, I was pleased that Rio called and asked to meet with me. It was important to hear from him personally about the way he must manage his body between games.

"This is not to say he cannot play back-to-back games - he can and has proven so. He's out this time due to particular pre-planned details already in place for his programme.

"I must place on record how I was impressed with his commitment to playing for England and I look forward to hopefully selecting him for squads in the future."

Ferdinand said: "It was important for me to be able to speak with Roy face to face and explain the situation, and one thing I made clear was that my passion and commitment to represent my country is as strong as ever.

"It is disappointing that I won't be able to play a part in the upcoming games but I told Roy that I want to continue to be available for England and I look forward to working with him in the future."

Steven Caulker, who was originally named in Stuart Pearce's Under-21 squad, will now join the seniors.

 Good on him.

Great, hope he was just waiting to get face-to-face with Hodgson so he could tell him to go swivel.

Heh, it's a shame because he's England's best defender but you can't blame him after what's happened. Another shame is that Hodgson probably won't use this to bed in people like Smalling and Jones.

EDIT: Due to "detailed pre-planned training and medical programme he must follow". Wonder what that is.
