SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Jesus Christ I’ve just seen the clip of that raging thundercnut Geraldo telling viewers if they can hold their breath for 10 seconds they don’t have coronavirus :wenger:

This did make me laugh

What has become increasingly clear over the last couple of weeks is that most European governments are all following the same playbook. It's how they convey that to the public which is causing the most controversy

So now people at our schools with conditions coming under the list are reccomended to Isolate what happens if you live with someone with one of those?

It's a little baffling, one school has closed due to lack of staff, another has reached 10+ off + another 5 including the head due to having listed conditions.
The former school is open tommorow for staff not isolating, homework packs/school meals will be handed out and will seemingly remain open for staff /school meals.
My issue is unless one of those isolating with symptoms gets hospitalised and tests positive , nothing will happen at the school. No deep clean. Corona could be having a field day.

As far as I know children often don't show (strong) symptons in the first place, making it impossible to actually weed out the infected ones. Which is probably why the bigger European countries started by closing down schools.

Don’t know about that, they’ve been preparing for a lockdown and we don’t do address to the nation very often

It's also our national holiday though. Even without announcing a lockdown, the circumstances might warrant a speech.

Had to look up two words in this sentence. As somebody who appears to know more than the average person on this, even if they kept a vast array of animals in the same place, would basic hygiene practices see the possibility dramatically reduce enough to quash any concerns of a future outbreak, or would they need to go further and simply not keep that many there to begin with?

It wouldn't hurt, but it wouldn't dramatically reduce the chances. Although like I said the chances are already tiny. The real issue is having dozens of different species of live animal in close contact over extended periods of time and in close proximity to people.

It might not be helpful to mix influenza up with coronavirus but it's a good example: the swine flu epidemic came about because avian flu, which doesnt normally infect humans, and human flu both infected pigs. Pigs infected with human and bird flu acted like virus factories, generating new viruses which took genes from both.

The Irish address by the taoiseach is kinda hitting it home this is bloody massive, like the end of days massive..

I like learning things like this and the creepy visual. Must have made for some interesting theories before finding out the actual reason.

As an aside, wondered why they're a protected species and it says it's "because their numbers have declined so dramatically." Tempting to look at them as loathsome little things after this but they obviously have their part in the ecosystem.

I just thought some mad weirdo was camping out in there or something. Still creepy even when I knew the reason because it was slightly isolated.

There were always bats about where I grew up, you rarely see them and they don’t bother you so I kind of like them. It’s a nightmare for people getting them in their roofs though because you not even allowed to have any work done on your roof without having a bat survey by a government approved bat expert, you have to use really expensive bat friendly roofing felt and so on. This is why the farmer used the radio because he knew it would make selling it for development more complicated with bats in.

China helped no one when they were hiding the extent of the epidemy and then letting people come and go from China. And now we have people looking at them like heros.

My girlfriend is pregnant at the moment and has been told to stay away from work for 12 weeks because of it. I’m self employed though and ideally need to work to pay bills. What’s the best thing for us to do? Should she move back to her parents until the time comes if/when I’m in isolation? Or will she be ok staying with me but running the risk of me coming back from work having picked it up? At least with her parents they will be pretty much isolating anyway. We’ve also got the added complication of her brother having cystic fibrosis, so her going back and forth between the 2 houses isn’t an option.

One of the problems is that people tend to make them leave their natural habitat and they end up in even worse places. I seem to remember that it was the case for vampire bats in Mexico.

Why what's been said?

A "this is the calm before the storm" speech. We don't know when this will be over, the effects will be with us for years, the world is in this together, quoted Churchill, etc.

Not really. The PM and Chancellor were explicit today multiple times that insurance companies are expected to pay out.

Closing all dining businesses would harm some communities. I think it would be the wrong approach.
I don't think it would hurt people not to be able to go out to eat. We have no restaurants or bars open here, so you make your own meals and eat at home. If you're talking about fast food places, it wouldn't be a bad thing for people to change their diets for a while!

Exactly what Italy is saying behind closed doors. The EU will face some difficult challenges when this is all over.
Italy I can understand, that they are pissed off.
But the Czech Republic? They are at the moment in a better position than all of the western european countries. So shouldnt help from the Cech Republic going to the hardest hit counries in the EU, like Italy and Spain?
fecking hypocrites.
And the problem ist not the EU but the member states, the first reaction of all of them was to go back to the nation state.

Who is paying for the upgrade in facilities, maintenance, inspection and regulation of the facilities that you demand?

I'm not demanding upgrades I'm demanding they be shut down altogether.

And as has been said plenty of times already, the only reason China let these markets continue after SARS is there were enough wealthy vested interests, corruption and lining of pockets to keep the government disinterested in enforcing anything. Political and economic pressure from outside after this will hopefully be enough to change their minds, just in case their colossal embarrassment isn't enough to spur them to action.

Though to be clear, I'm only saying the aspect of selling live "exotic" animals needs shut down entirely. Most of what's sold in wet markets is fresh food and that's fine.

I think you Brits should watch Leo's speech so you can see the stark difference between Boris and a (semi) competent leader.

Why what's been said?
Nothing much of note just an update but said that it will go on for months and people will die. It was the whole atmosphere of it but was quite scary, I pray we are only preparing for the worst but didn’t seem like it.

Jesus...he's basically holding back tears here. Wow!

Was a bit sad Italy facing that grave situation, Germany banned exporting of masks Italy greatly needed. China sent them to Italy instead.

China have a lot to answer for though.

Send her off to her parents. It's going to be difficult not seeing her, but it's for the best.

Desperation, it can't be anything else, no matter what the outcome it's so sad to see this.

Kind of agree, but at the same time I can understand the sentiment of @Sweet Square here.

I think a lot of people have been surprised at the lack of planning by the World's Superpowers during this crisis (not just U.K's 'planning') - I mean, we've been due a proper Pandemic for literally decades... think of the power and resources of these Governments in the technological age ffs.

You'd think there'd be an immediate model and protocol to follow at the first inkling of a Pandemic.

Indeed as @Di Maria's angel myself and a number of others were so frustrated about in the early days of this very crisis was that you'd have thought there'd have been Global protocol of lockdown the country affected, aid goes in, no-one comes out, get it under control and slowly test the waters until the situation is sorted. This could have been done.

Instead you've got a Global fecking Pandemic, and you've got EVERY country in lockdown anyway.

Think how much gets spent by U.K, U.S, Russia every year on weapons and defence... there shouldn't be such a drastic shortage of ICU beds and resources. Again, the World has been due a Pandemic for decades.

I think it's completely fair for pretty much every Government to come under heavy criticism for lack of planning - they've been caught napping, and have clearly grown complacent in many key areas.

Yup. It's ridiculous. I argued with @Dante about a world wide lockdown ages ago and now we're seeing exactly that. If I could see that as the best solution over a month ago, how could the so called professionals not? I said it before, and I'll say it again, these deaths are the fault of the the powers in charge. No just complacency, incompetency. I'm utterly disgusted with the way this was handled. So many innocent lives lost because no-one had the intelligence or balls to act.

Absolutely determined not to let them get their insurance payouts.

If the government orders all pubs and restaurants shut because of Coronavirus, they still won't be able to claim in a huge percentage of cases.

I used to sell insurance to restaurants and pubs and this sort of thing is just not covered by most policies (and certainly the type of policies small businesses take up, often going for the cheapest they can get that just covers the basics).

They'd be better off burning each others buildings down, as ridiculous as that sounds. Arson is covered, government enforced shutdowns are not.

Boris is a twat but not for this.

China taking advantage of the crisis to undermine the EU, Russia heavily involved in Brexit and Trump election, America eager to bring the UK under its influence. It seems there's an effort from world superpowers to divide the EU, its basically a fourth superpower and the easiest one to break apart. Russia and China will probably turn their attention to the US after.

Heard some insurance spokesman on the radio thr other day say that hardly anyone takes out the insurance to cover this.

I wonder if football clubs do though.

Probably because it’s easier to do a deal with the banks to sort mortgages out. Rents are slightly more complicated (who are the landlords?) and so will require a little longer to resolve. Plus they literally can’t sort everything out all at once in 24 hours. Give them a break ffs

oh for feck sake. This government has been in power for a decade and even then we've known about this virus since January. Not to mention the policies other countries have put forward. No one is asking for acts of God but simply effective governance.

I might be one of the few Irish people who genuinely wants ghost town to be the new national anthem .

It's a banger of tune and would be the greatest in joke all of time.
