SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Man this is depressing news. Guessing it’s a race against time in terms of boosters? Do we know how the rest of the country is in terms of Omicron infection vs London?

Jabs and boosters should keep our hospital numbers down I think? That's why there's a a huge booster push.
Yeah but just mathematically, even if they keep numbers low as a %, if the raw number grows too big, which it will at this rate (not done any actual calcs but intuitively), that won’t be sufficient? Hopefully with school holidays and WFH the growth will slow, but who knows.

Weren't cases always going to ramp up at this exact date and for the next 7 days? Everyone doing tests even without symptoms or close contacts on the off chance they are positive. Get the run up to Christmas off work and enough time to wrap pressies and be free for Christmas day?

Or am I just a grumpy old fart and people wouldn't actually do that?
I know of a few people who have been ill recently but are relying on negative LFTs to convice them it's not Covid. So the number of people soldiering on without doing a PCR test probably negate any idea that more completely asymptomatic people are taking them and skewing the figures.

The other problem is that London being the epicentre of it all is also bad as the people working there, many of them will return home over the next week or so for Christmas.

It's growing too fast - on the 11th it was 19% in the north west for example (last published data) but it's probably 50% by now.

That's pretty conclusive.

@jojojo

This was what I was getting at about omicron blowing up testing capacity in next few weeks.

Anyone speak Danish?!?

The text in the white window:
Do only take a pcr-test if you need it.
Because of the pressure on the testing sites, Statens Serum Institute advices you to take a rapid corona test if you only need the result for your corona pass.

text in blue window:
When should you take a pcr-test?
sunnhedsmyndighederne (health institute) advices you to book a test if you:

- have covid-19 symptoms
- are a close contact to one who tested positive on covid-19
- have tested positive for covid-19 on a rapid test

when should you take a rapid test?
If you don’t tick any of the options above, you should instead take a rapid test.

What is the reason for this?

GP records less accurate - people who've left the area or even the country sometimes still on the lists, particularly in student areas.

Plus the population skews younger and whereas nationally older people are 95%+ vaccinated, that's not true for younger adults where it's more like 65-70%

There are other factors around population demographics as well - ethnicity and housing density being the most obvious ones. However, nationally, areas with high levels of past infection and low average age are the least vaccinated. A lot of people see past infection (whether that was proven by testing or just by thinking "I must have done") as enough, particularly if they think they are otherwise healthy.

What is the reason for this?

It seems to be similar in some of Manchester's most busy/cosmopolitan/young areas as well: Link

Speaking personally, I live and work in the city centre and (pre-pandemic) would go out clubbing every weekend. That meant I'd inevitably end up getting colds and flus quite regularly. But I'd also recover equally quickly and my illnesses never got too severe.

I think people in dense population/nightlife areas have an unrealistically high opinion of their own immune systems because of their prior experiences with other milder diseases. It's a sentiment I hear a lot from friends who think they'll be okay because they've always been okay in the past. In fact, I think the same to some degree. But I'm not going to turn down a free vaccine that gives me a stronger immune system with less risk than catching Covid itself.

Is Robert Peston a real person? His intonation is beyond parody.

Ok, thanks. So they’re still PCR testing everyone with symptoms and close contacts of cases. Be interesting to see how much longer they can keep that up.

A lot of countries will have to pivot to LFTs. And I’m getting the impression they’re even more inaccurate with omicron than they were with previous variants.

Holy shit. Presume that’s one third of total population? (i.e. including kids too young to get jabbed) Which would be less bad.
I can't see the article but I think they're talking about the 12+ population. Around 68% of over 12s have had one dose in London region, 61% have had two. Higher than that in some wealthy suburbs, but much lower in some other areas (including in some where it may be a GP record admin issue rather than a real phenomena)

So from this it seems we can go out, clubbing, etc. I've got an Xmas party tomorrow night (not at Downing Street) and all of us just breathed a sigh of relief.

Oh, Whitty just said don't go. Screw that. We will all get pre tested (LFT) before we're allowed through the doors.

Just got to weigh up whether you want to catch it or not really, as doing any activity that involves a lot of people indoors is a huge risk right now.

It's tricky now what to do for the best. I have one next week and really want to go but I'm starting to think if it's irresponsible to do so.

In situations such as these, I commend to you the Chinese relativity axiom. No matter how great your triumphs or how tragic your defeats (or whether or not you go next week), approximately one billion Chinese couldn’t care less.

unless you intend to be a hermit for the next 2 months just go it’s very likely no matter what you will come in contact with the virus if your are out and about

Had my Moderna booster yesterday and have woken up with a dull but uncomfortable pain in the left hand side of my chest, just under my left nipple. Gets worse when I breath in. Could have just slept funny I guess but my minds racing.

I had my Moderna booster on Monday (had a couple Pfizers before - tasty little cocky for me!) and was absolutely cooked yesterday. Woke up all feverish with a cracking headache and general muscle aches all over. Woke up this morning feeling much better... basically back to normal.

I was fine after my other two jabs, but this one just steamrolled me. Hope you're beginning to feel better, but you may be a bit grim for another day or so!

So they were telling people to have 4 jabs tonight?

So i'm guessing that on the most venerable, they don't feel 3 jabs are enough.

I'm hoping the tubes will be nigh on empty and the only people inside will be tested. Testing is mandatory on the day. Obviously doesn't eliminate the risk but no way am I going anywhere else.

As for risks, I need to take pre flight PCR test in 10 days or that's over a grand in tickets down the drain. I need to hope that if I do catch it, it clears out of the system just before! :nervous:

Not really, thanks for asking. I still have a pain in my chest and came home from work at lunch, have been a bit breathless since midday. I've just got off the phone to 111 and am waiting for a clinician to call back.

Fingers crossed mate. For what it's worth someone at work had theirs a couple of weeks ago and had awful chest pains after, spoke to 111 etc and got checked but turned out to just seemingly a bit of a rough reaction to it and nothing worse. Let us know how you get on.

They'll stick to boosters and tests I think. We'll probably hear them start to ramp up the advice (maybe like Scotland?) but I doubt we'll hear actual regulations coming in.

We’ll have to start calling you the bloody oracle :D

Spot on again pal.

Up to you. You know the risk at this stage.

I was supposed to be going to a gig tonight in London but decided not to. My wife is pregnant so need to be careful at the moment.

I haven't been feeling too good this week anyway (Don't think it's covid related) just run down from work, so many people off sick at the moment.

While we're all here - don't forget to vote for the RedCafe awards! The voting threads are here:

Part 2

The voting template is at the start of each thread - but you don't need to vote in every category. If you don't want to spend much time on this, just vote for the ones you can think of right away and leave it at that. We'd basically just to love to get more votes and get results that are a bit more representative of the entire forum.
