Schalke vs Manchester United

I think we can win this tie tonight.

Absolutely, why not? The media have been creaming themselves over an upset.

It's as if Utd haven't prepared and are going into this having won this already:rolleyes:

I've watched Schalke plenty of times this season and I honestly think we have more than enough to win this tie tonight!

They seem to be very gung-ho with their play and we should be able to pick them off.

I heard some stats this morning about United and Schalke in the CL on the radio. I cant remember exactly what they were but they were something like this,

They have scored 7 more goals than us.
Committed 30ish more fouls than us.
Recieved 14 more yellow cards than us.

Your Gung-Ho comment seems to be fairly justified if those stats are anything to go by.

Are they playing nice football though??

Have we got any players a booking away from missing the second leg?

Only Red cards now prevent players from missing the second leg. Yellow cards got wiped at Quarter Final stage.

I agree, my only concern is the pacy Jefferson Farfan. He is allegedly the main outlet for Schalke and i heard an unverified stat on Talksport today which suggested over 40% of Schalkes goals come from down his flank.

Whether or not that stat is accurate it still suggests his importance offensively to Schalke, and against a defensively struggling Evra it could prove to be a key battle especially tonight.

I stress am only repeating what i have heard today from a German correspondent, but with your experience of watching Schalke this season would you agree with that assessment or not?

Yes Farfan is their main man when it comes to creating stuff, Park on the left wouldn't be a surprise at all. Schalke can be a bit naive at times and commit too many to attacking, that's something United can use on the counter.

AdZzUtd's 'feck ME IT'S A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL POST-EXTRAVAGANZA!'

Manchester United Defeat Real Madrid 4-3 on AGG. 10 years after Munich, Sir Matt and his new rebuilt Manchester United seek to capture that which caused so much tragedy - we should always always remember how winning the European cup for this club means so much than for anyone else, everytime we win it is a symbol of United shaking our fists in the face of fate and honouring those who are so special to us.

Roy-Keane-wheels-away-aft-001.jpg

Roy Keane picks up a dejected United in Turin on the way to lift a historic treble and win the match. As a performance Keane gave his all and missed the final, alongside his midfield partner Paul Scholes. Keane is one player any right-thinking United fan would love to see in his prime in this current United side. Considering our vast history of fantastic players, this is the ultimate praise.

Paul Scholes scores against Barcelona at Old Trafford. For United fans who watched this live, the moment is cherished not only for the belief we could win the champions league, but because Paul Scholes (God - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) is our hero and saviour and that it was fecking awesome. Scholes made up for missing out on the '99 final, by winning this semi final and destroying himself and Claude Makelele in the final. Which we also won, so feck off Chelsea.

Manchester United displaying quintessential counter-attacking football destroy Arsenal at the emirates thank in part to the fantastic performance of Ronaldo. United went onto the Final only to decide to let Barcelona have the title, because we didn't fancy it much that year. Less said the better.

It's a particularly poignant moment for United tonight, after the film 'United' on Easter Sunday it seems somewhat fitting that MUFC are back in Germany tonight almost as a sign of defiance and sheer power of will that we possess.

Always in our minds.

wish there was more successes to add to this. 4 wins 7 losses at the semi stage is the worst record out of the top 10 teams that have made the most semi-finals. here's hoping to make it 5 out of 12.

To be honest ot would suit us perfectly if they come onto us in big numbers. With our speedy counter attacking play and Rooney in decent form that would play into our hands.

Thanks for soothing my nerves, Cal.

There's no doubt we can win. I'm actually reasonably confident that we can get through this fixture.

Thats proably what worries me most. I'm almost always wrong about these things!

And cheers for stirring them up again Denis!

I'm going !!!

Managed to get hold of a ticket - sitting right next to the away section and looking forward to hearing some specials.

A good rule of thumb with me is to disregard almost everyting I say about football. I know shit all!!

To be fair to me though, I do support United so I get somethings right!

A ticket for tonight or for the home leg.

Apparently they are a particularly loud crowd if there team's on top!

SAF is quite rightfully cautious and has shown the players videos of the matches vs Inter. They never looked like losing, due to their self belief, apparently. This is good - at least the players and SAF himself are not taking this as lightly as some of the media presume. I wouldn't bet against a draw tonight, and a cagey defensive approach - nullify their spirit then bring them back to OT and sweep them away

starting 11 for me, would be:

-------- Hernandez
------ Rooney
Nani, Park , Valencia
------ Carrick
Evra, Vida, Rio, Raf
------- VDS
Would be madness to play that team

It'll be Vds - O Shea, Vidic, Rio, Evra - Park, Carrick, Giggs, Valencia - rooney and Hernandez

This that right? Sky Sports News have mentioned a few times that they have 3 players on a yellow card that could cost them a place in the second leg. Didn't say anything about us though, hence the question.

From ManUtd.com

14:38 The NRZ paper have also printed their predicted line-ups for each team. Schalke: Neuer; Uchida, Howedes, Metzelder, Sarpei; Farfan, Matip, Papadopoulos, Jurado; Raul, Edu. United: Van der Sar; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Park; Rooney, Hernandez.

Don't know enough about them to comment. Our side looks pretty tight at that though apart from the ommision of Nani!!

Also from manutd.com answers this fairly definativly;

there are no United players in danger of missing the second leg should they get booked tonight.

Van der Sar; O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Park; Rooney, Hernandez.

That won't be far off I don't think, depends what tactics SAF goes with but the only change from that would be Nani for Hernandez I think.

6000th post. Wow.

I reckon that'll be spot on. Perhaps Rafael in for O'Shea, but that's probably the most likely team. Can't wait for this one.

My hunch is that SAF will go with the experience of O'Shea in such a hostile atmosphere.

Maybe bring on Rafael for the last 15-20 mins if we're still looking for an away goal.
