Ramos or Otamendi ?
There's a logical argument to be made that Ramos would be the better choice, despite being a couple of years older. He's a proven winner, and clearly established at the highest level for both club and country. He's a quality defender with leadership abilities, and could undoubtedly anchor our back line. That said, I still find myself favouring Otamendi. He's been outstanding every time I've seen him play, and seems extremely well suited for the English game. I also like that he'd be joining the club, eager to prove himself and hungry to win trophies.

This is so obvious we're being used to gain Ramos a new contract with Real Madrid. I admit to being duped by Dani Alves, but I can't be the only one who sees it happening all over again with Ramos, can I?

It would be nice for once to get a player that Madrid were trying to hold on to.

Usually when a player leaves Madrid it's because Madrid wants to sell.

I think he'll get a fat new contract too.

Can we just get serious and aim for realistic targets? We'll soon be asking for Ronaldo now

Let me get this clear I think we don't need Ramos and Otamendi would be a better investment for us especially at the quoted transfer price and wages but it might all be worth it just to see the outburst at Real Madrid.

How I would just love us to knick a player for once their fans adore, they have taken so many of ours !

They've taken one and they smashed the World Record for it .

If he did leave and we weren't interested because we didn't think he was a realistic target how would you feel then?

That makes little sense considering none of us actually know what's going on behind the scenes. Would you have termed our pursuit and signing of Di Maria realistic when the season had ended last year? He was arguably their best player, definitely in their top 3. Ramos actually has issues there judging by how all this has exploded. Yes, it's more probable that he will extend but there's certainly something in it.

If we had signed another who I was happy with I'd firm it. Isn't the aim with transfers to minimise risk ? Doesn't make sense to let guaranteed targets slip to pursue potential targets. That being said there's no indication of that happening right now and who knows.

If psg or liverpool hadn't come in for Depay we might not have signed him yet, LVG said we only acted due to the competition, which while I find strange could mean that we'll move faster if the competition moves on our targets aka schnederlin.

The new tax laws in Spain are really beginning to kick Madrid in the balls. The new rate is what 50%? This means for Ramos to get the wages he wants they'd need to more than double his current salary? Very similar to Di Maria and with Falcao gone, RVP likely to go, Young taking a pay cut as well as the money saved from DDG we could match whatever he wants.

In terms of Ronaldo I would be gutted. Ramos...well...less so

It seems like we reached a new level of 'using United to get a better contract'. It looks like they have fallen out, there is hope this time it is not like the last time. It's the hope that's killing us. Maybe the reports are true about them, maybe they are exaggerated.

Alves was brilliant, wasnt he? Made i dont know how many press conferences, talking shite about being hurt by the club and the offer they made him or whatever he said. He was brilliant, i really thought he wouldnt stay at Barca til i saw the CL final and how he danced happy around and behaved like a maniac off the field.

Ramos doing somehting similar, although not talking publicly. Being hurt by Perez, they dont get on well etc....
In the end once a better contract offer is on the table, and the offer will come sooner or later, he will sign it and we will look like mugs for not signing Otamendi. If we are lucky enough, Otamendi could still be gettable, but who knows.

Thats why we should pay the 35m and bring him in instead of wasting our time with Ramos. He would be immediately available after the Copa, while the thing with Ramos will drag on til August or even further with a big risk of just wanting a better offer from them.

People are (understandably) worried about the prospect of Ramos leading us down the garden path in an attempt to get a better deal out of Real Madrid, but the solution seems quite simple to me: impose a deadline and if we can't get him by that point, revert to the Otamendi deal.

I'm amazed we're even humouring this after Fabregas and Ronaldo. Every summer it's happening.

Cesc Fabregas doesn't play for Barcelona anymore though. As in, he actually did leave them!

ah just feck off if Sergio Ramos is our marquee signing of the summer. feck right off.

Trading De Gea for Ramos would be like trading a Picasso for that drawing of a dog my 3 year old niece did.

Calm down. The window hasn't even opened yet, so who the hell knows what our marquee signing might be. All I know is Ramos would be an excellent an signing.

Still not sure whether we're just winding up Real, or if Ramos is trying a very dangerous power play. It reminds me of the Rooney situation first time around. Real won't cave though like we did, if that's the case.

Or, you know, it's all BS

I just don't see any quotes from any people close to Ramos in these articles.
When do you ever in these situations?

What's Sid Lowe's track record like? The name rings a bell but no more.

I would piss myself laughing if after all this, we're all like "nah, not interested lol", leaving Madrid with one of their key dressing room leaders unsettled

This would be one of the biggest transfers in our clubs history given the stature of the player and the clubs positions. it isnt a question of losing De Gea, its clear now he wasnt going to renew his contract, so we have been forced to get the best value out of him possible, and if that means we grab one of the worlds best centre backs in his prime from Real of all people, then im all for it.

Still reckon were being used... AGAIN... for a better contract.
