Serious Thread: The Liverpool Situation

They are a massive club and have a very good manager in place now...but I just can't see them sitting at the top table in English football for a long, long time. They are probably further away from winning a league title now than any time in my life. The problem doesn't lie with teh club mentality or anything like that, it's just very simple; they don't have the money.

Last summer and January prove this. While City, United, Chelsea can go and splunk 100million every summer and offer the 200a-week+ wages, Liverpool simply can not.

What are you talking about? Liverpool have spent an absolute fortune in recent years.

We haven't spent more than £40m on average in the last three years, off the top of my head. That's not what I'd call an absolute fortune if you compare it to the likes of City and United.

I think the whole population of Southampton is dining on caviar and champagne because of a certain clubs largesse.

I checked earlier and you'd spent something like £265m over 3 years. I assume you're talking net spend?

Yeah I am, I think it gives a better indicator of how deep the club's/owners' pockets are. I don't think we would've been able to spend that much in recent years if we didn't have the combined £125m or so for Suarez and Sterling. Since I can't see one of our best players leaving this Summer, it'll be interesting to see how much we're able to spend.

But I agree with you if you just look at that £265m total, yes. Actually, this Liverpool side still has some glaring problems and that's pretty worrying after spending that much money.

In fairness, you havent had a manager in for a long time who could be trusted to reliably build with that kind of cash. Klopp should be a really settling influence for you.

Really feels like the day their top 4 ambitions end. I realise this is me conceding that the title is going to the team José couldn't get into the top 10 last season but he seems to be over that slump so next year is our year.

Who could reastically afford/need Torres at the moment apart from City? Bearing in mind that he wouldnt go to Utd or Madrid and you have to say Barca dont need him.

They would need to get atleast £40m to make it worth while getting rid, as this leaves them with only 1 striker in Ngog. So a lot of money would have to be spent thier, taking them back to square one.
Of course we threw 50mil at them for a finished player :mad:

Why aren't the Liverpool fans more vocal about getting the owners to put their hands in their pocket? Liverpool are meant to be one of the biggest clubs in the world and the Premier League is richer than ever. Surely there's no excuse for not investing proper amounts into the squad when even diddy teams like Crystal Palace can go out and spend money like it's Christmas. Has John Henry tricked fans into believing the moneyball type spending is the correct way forward when it's actually just a big cash grab for himself?

They got a new stand and Klopp, that'll keep them quiet for a few years of no success again
