Shinji Kagawa

He's playing well whenever he gets the ball. Japan are tearing Italy apart.

That one touch thigh pass, left footed cross and his left footed shot were also sexual.

For about 30 minutes he absolutely bossed Italy. Best player on the park by a mile.

Sadly, Italy appear to have woken up since then, and he's been anonymous.

I really hope we use him properly this season. Such a classy player.

His back against goal, surrounded by Italian world class defenders, with his left foot:drool:

He and Endo have rocked this game so far. Too bad Endo is 33.. He'd work really well next to Carrick in my opinion.

He really dominated that first half, him and Honda are playing excellent football, they were pissing on Italian's central midfield for 30 minutes. Whoever doesn't rate him, should just rewatch that first halt.

Pienaar's a hard fecker with power, stamina and pace.
I like Kagawa, but that's not how I'd describe him.

Maybe after the horseshoe challenge ;)

But I mean coming inside from the left with short passes and also linking well with the full back

He may be starting on the left again tonight, but when playing with us he was a fair bit wider in my opinion. Tonight he's been been coming central after the first touch he gets in the move and has ended up in the 10 position or even further up front. We need to give him the same freedom.

world class

Has to do a very different job for Japan than for us or Dortmund, because of their lack of a really good central striker to play ahead of him and Honda. Does it equally brilliantly, though.

When fit, this guy needs to start every game for us next season, no more leaving him out. He's immense.

Easily MOTM today. Looked dangerous whenever he had the ball, barely misplaced a pass, created several chances, had many great crosses, managed to dribble past the Italian defenders several times, and scored a great goal. Just to make the performance even more classy, he also helped out defensively deep in midfield.

He was responsible for semen deposit tonight. Great performance. As has been said, I'd like him to be our chief creator. If anything, put Rooney on the fecking left.

I actually think Rooney will benefit from that too. Strange as it sounds, the game has changed since we first started playing him at #10. He'll be better with the extra space and freedom of movement granted by a faux-wide position.

Rooney wouldn't benefit from that...not to mention him being played on the left would contradict his desire to play where he wants (the reason he had a falling out with Fergie)
Rooney's also looked better as a striker, a center forward, and a midfielder as he has on the left most of the time.

It's mainly because his technical ability on the ball is very good and his touch as well is just shy of exceptional. You'd be hard pressed to name someone better in the United squad with better touch and ability on the ball. Even if you could it wouldn't be by much.

He starts inside left for Japan as well.

He does start inside left but looks much more effective when he drifts to the middle. His ability to get out of tight spaces and see people in space is a bit wasted on the wing.

Yeah, in terms of the way we utilize our wingers it's completely different to the role he plays for Japan. It's more of a withdrawn 'on the ball' role that allows people to move around him and to get the ball close to goal on the inside rather than the outside. One that Mata/Silva played similarly for their clubs in the last couple of years.

When he moved deeper later on in the second half he was less of an on the ball mover and more the passing link in midfield and arriving late to the box which was interesting to see. Would suit our style as well. He is a very skillful player and I am glad we have him.

Though I don't watch a ton of Everton, I think he would work in the Pienaar role quite well. Not a pacy, left-footed winger that hugs the touch line, rather a technical, one-touch player that vaguely operates from the left.

Will leave the true width to Evra, and can get into the box when Valencia/whoever is on the other side.

He is incredibly classy though. Desperately hope Moyes was watching ;)

What is clear is that Rooney doesn't have the same sort of subtlety to knit as well as Shinji. I'd give him my vote for the#10 role. This isn't even to say he is a better player, but he is better there I think.

Just seen the game, he was probably the best player on the pitch for 70-75 minutes, faded a bit towards the end. I had no idea he's such a quality crosser with his left peg. He's got everything needed to be deadly in one of them fashionable cutting-in-most-of-the-time-but-mixing-it-up-for-good-measure wide roles, especially to the left. In fact, if Rooney stays and Thiago comes in, I think that's where I'll prefer him.

I think last night showed that the key to getting the best out of Kagawa is the fluidity of the system that allows him freedom as opposed to where his starting position is listed.

Yep, he is a player who thrives in a formation that has freedom and the ability to rotate and find space.

Our fixed rigid formation made his weaknesses stand out a bit too much.
