Shooting in San Bernardino, California

How are the republican and gun nuts going to blame mental illness for this one?
Seen what happened in France I guess doesn't matter where they get the guns, in France they had machine guns which I believe is illegal. Most of you are too quick to blame the so called gun culture without waiting to see if was a terrorism attack or someone with a mental problem.

You thought of that when reading about shootings in America? Isis wouldn't add on to their problems.

At the moment sleeper cells are a definite possibility but for me the motive in this one will be revenge for some perceived slight.

Well if Im correct, the majority of Americans believe gun ownership for all should remain, despite these events happening on a ruler basis for many decades. Even in the most recent gun debate initiated by Obama in a Democrat majority Government, a majority wanted to retain the right to bear arms. Or have I mistaken that?

If Im right, then yes, the general populous knows the risks and is willing to put up with it.

Look, I don't know why you are making me out to be the bad guy here! I hate guns or any weapons for that matter, and Im in no way condoning their use! Most societies in the the world have made gun ownershi illegal by the common man.

America chooses not to. That comes at a societal cost - thats all Im saying.
The majority of Americans want reform (not ban but at least more control etc), but the NRA shout these things down even though they actually speak for a very small proportion of gun owners and are rather led by huge amounts of money from the gun manufacturers.

But, that point even seems irrelevant to the point at hand being that you're saying you've no sympathy for innocent victims just because of where they live.

This kind of thing doesn't happen every week in France.

Whichever one of the reasons it was, surely its made easier because there are 270 million firearms possessed by American civilians. Not that hard to get hold of one.

I answered that in an earlier reply. I think its individually tragic but its also very predictable given the laws and culture.

due to EU law citizens could cross the borders of member countries unchecked. it has been too easy for terrorists to smuggle weapons into France. Border controls have been revised since the last atrocity.

You seemed confused as to why you were being looked upon as 'the bad guy', I was merely explaining it being down to your opening post.

True but the last few years they had terrorism related shootings and keeps rising

What this guy said:

There are all kinds of unconfirmed reports regarding the shooters...

- ranging from single shooter to multiple shooters....
- white males to males of middle eastern appearance

The reports that they are men of Middle Eastern appearance seem to be gaining ground. Also police dispatch reports seem to be suggesting they might be armed with AK47s and body armour.

As always, news outlets more concerned with 'breaking news' first than being accurate.

Wow. That is nuts. I did not appreciate just how endemic this behaviour has become ..... and will only get exponentially worse as time goes on.

Something will have to give soon. But its a monster of all problems to solve: Even if guns were outlawed tomorrow, how do you hoover up 250+ million guns from 100 million civilians who ideologically believe its their human right to own one?

Over time.

It's far from easy and will cause uproar in some places but a line needs drawing in the sand.

Unfortunately it'll never happen.

Quite a few are mentioning a name from the police scanner - Farooq Saeed - a county employee.

EDIT: PD has not confirmed or denied
Which leads to shit like this:

"He sounds brown! It must be terrorism!"

There has reportedly been another shooting incident, this time in/near a mall in Pasadena. Might not be related though.

Surely there has to be a tipping point. Because that statistic above its beyond crazy.

Maybe its because important enough people have not yet been affected?

Has a senator or Fortune 100 CEO ever been killed in a mass shooting?

There are reports of a man with a middle eastern appearance, wearing camouflage and a radio headset who was stationed in a shopping mall across the road.

Just because America has a gun disease, doesn't mean we should be too quick to rule out terrorism here. Not after everything that has been going on in Europe.

Apparently that was unrelated. A parole violator in a shopping mall.

They have armed security of their own. Although there was that lady senator who got shot in Arizona.

Read that they were hispanic looking.

There's been a number of what should have been tipping points, Sandy Hook being the most obvious. When kids being killed isn't enough to bring change you kind of lose hope.

We shouldn't really rule anything in or out at this stage.

But I thought more guns made people safer?!

If it's not "terrorists" then how on earth do you get three people doing something like this together?

If it's terrorism, then expect another shooting soon. If not, then it probably isn't.

This is so absolutely heartbreaking.

What kind of monster attacks people in a development disability center and kills two dozen ?

:( :( :( :( :(

I didn't realise that there had been so many mass shootings (defined as 4 or more injured/killed) in the US this year. I knew it was a fair few but seeing this graphic somewhat shocked me:

Another reminder that America needs to address problems closer to home.

This is all a bit OJ with the chopper following the pursuit live.

ETA: Looks like they've got him, or at least one of them.

Do we know if any racial group has a majority presence? Could this be a small but domestic terrorist group?
