Southampton v Manchester United

This is how we lined up against Southampton in the FA-Cup in 2009, by the way:
Van der Sar - Neville, Evans, Vidic, O'Shea - Nani, Anderson, Carrick (Gibson 56), Giggs (Possebon 56) - Welbeck (Rooney 63), Berbatov
I expect to see changes for Saturday's match, but only a few.

Van der Sar - O'Shea, Smalling, Vidic, Fabio - Nani, Anderson, Fletcher, Obertan - Chicharito, Rooney

Lindegaard

O'Shea
Ferdinand
Evans
Fabio

Bebe
Carrick
Anderson
Obertan

Owen
Hernandez

SUBS:
Kuszczak, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Fletcher, Berbatov, Rooney

I doubt both Obertan and Bebe start that could go real bad, one may take one of the berths but Nani will be playing on the right

We need him totally fresh against Aston Villa, no doubts.

At the moment, the team I would pick is:

------------Hernandez---Owen---------
Obertan------Carrick---Gibson------Nani
Fabio----Smalling----Ferdinand----Brown
----------------Kuszczak---------------

Lindegaard, O'Shea, Evans, Anderson, Fletcher, Bebe, Berbatov.

PS. I think Kuszczak is still second choice, Lindegaard was on the bench yesterday, because Kuszczak came to Poland for Euro 2012 meeting, he has something to do with that. However, it's matter of time when Lindegaard becomes our second goalie.

I think PIG is #2 too, simply because of the experience. However this is the perfect game for Lindegaard to make his debut, get to know the lads against a League one opponent... Something tells me Ferguson will think exactly the same way. I also think Ferguson wants to rest as many as possible, and rather go with a strong bench.

Lindegaard -
Fabio, Brown, Evans, O'Shea
Bebe, Anderson, Carrick, Obertan
Owen, Chicharito

Is Carrick not hurt? Rooney needs to play in hopes he can score a goal. I'd prefer that we didn't send out a half-assed side only to get knocked out.

----------------PIG----------------
O'Shea--Smalling----Vidic------Fabio
Nani-----Carrick---Scholes---Obertan
---------Owen----Chicharito--------

Subs: Lindegaard, Evans, Anderson, Fletcher, Giggs, Rooney, Berbatov.

This would be it for me. Good enough starting 11 to get the job done hopefully, but in case we come unstuck, then a great bench to choose from.

Just picked one defender on the bench as we have O'Shea and Fabio on the pitch who can play either RB or LB if required.

Starting XI: ------------- Kuszczak ------------------------
Brown -------- Smalling --------------- Evans -------- Fabio
------ Fletcher ----------- Gibson ----------- Anderson -----
----- Hernandez ---------- Owen ------------ Obertan ------

Bench: Lindegaard, Neville, O`Shea, Scholes, Nani, Rooney, Bebe

I don't think we should be making wholesale changes to the lineup for an FA Cup game. For me, the Carling Cup is all about giving youth and fringe players a chance, while the FA Cup is about fielding a first team with a few changes here and there to integrate players into the side. I'd like to see at least one of Vidic/Ferdinand, at least one of Rooney/Berbatov and a solid team elsewhere. If we're cruising, we can give youth a chance, but Fergie will have learned from Leeds last year that just putting a team that would usually be good enough to win isn't always enough in this competition.

I know what you mean, but remember we have Aston Villa in three days after Southampton and Wolverhampton away next weekend. Clearly Southampton are the easiest opponent, when we want to rest someone, the best chance to do it is this Saturday.

i wouldnt mind seeing

kuzack
o,shea rio smalling fabio
obertan scholes carrick giggs
rooney hernandez

----------Lindesgaard---------
Brown---Smalling-Evans---Fabio
Nani---Carrick-Scholes---Sanchez
------Rooney--Owen----------

At least the PL can't fine us for fielding a weakened side in this game right?

Starting line up

TK
O'Shea, Smalling, Evans, Fabio
Fletcher, Scholes, Gibson, Obertan
Owen, Chicharito

Bench: Lindengaard, Brown, Anderson, Nani, Rooney, Bebe, Rio if fit.

Remember SAF said Giggs won't play against Southampton last week after the Birmingham game.

I don't know how good we will be at the back if Smalling and Evans combine again. I kinda want to see Brown and Smalling at the back.

Why would you put Scholes in your staring lineup is beyond me. He just played the whole 90 minutes against Blackpool and you expect him to start against Southampton?

Because he obviously needs the minutes after what we saw on Tuesday with him seemingly off the pace and he hasn't played in how many months? Are you telling me that Scholes isn't capable of playing 2 games in a row after sitting out the last 2 months?

You are a bit mental if you think that's the case.

----------------------------Kuzczak--------------------------

--Neville------------J. Evans--------Vidic---------------Fabio--

--Obertan----------Fletcher--------Anderson--------Rooney---

Subs: Lingaard, Brown, Smalling, Carrick, Gibson, Berbatov, Nani
Prediction1-2 Chicharito, Fletcher

I don't know how good we will be at the back if Smalling and Evans combine again. I kinda want to see Brown and Smalling at the back.

They are PL defenders playing for United, Evans obviously more experienced than Smalling, and despite not having much match time as a duo, shouldn't have too many problems with Southampton.

I think Bebe will play some part in this match, he was substituted after 60 mins in the last reserve game.

I'm surprised to see so many thinking we will play Owen and Chicharito together, I'd be shocked if Fergie did as they are way too similar to work as a pairing.

I've just applied MSc Risk Management for Southampton so I'll be cheering Soton for this one.

89' OG Alex Chamberlain '

I think it's going a bit far doing an MSc to equip yourself for a game against Southampton. The risks are pretty obvious really. Just defend well and hit them on the break if you're really worried about them. All this over-preparation ffs - the worlds gone FM mad

Made me laugh Crustanoid, how did you link that up with FM ?

Ummm... the depth that one goes to in order to assess elements of football from the FM generation - exaggerated to having to go to University for a year and a half to study an oppositions weaknesses. Fortuitous that you're doing risk management - otherwise the 'joke' (tenuous that it is!) might not have worked so well. :)

Strong squad for Cup trip

28/01/2011 10:30

Sir Alex says he will be taking a strong squad to St Mary’s for the FA Cup fourth round tie against Southampton despite being without a handful of first team regulars.

Edwin van der Sar has been given the weekend off, while Patrice Evra (family bereavement) and Rafael (concussion) will not be travelling. Michael Carrick, who has been struggling with an ankle injury, is expected to be available providing he comes through training on Friday.

“Michael will train today and hopefully he will be okay to travel,” the boss told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“We picked up one or two bruises at Blackpool the other night - it was quite a physical game, but we’ll still take a strong squad because it won’t be an easy match; away games in cup ties never are.

“I went to see Southampton play Oldham earlier this month and they won 6-0. They're having a good season. They play good football and I'm sure they'll have a go."

Sir Alex has a decision to make on who takes over in goal for the Reds with new signing Anders Lindegaard and Tomasz Kuszczak both vying for a starting spot.

"It's a possibility [a debut for Anders],” confirmed the manager. “He and Tomasz will both travel."

From this morning's pressy I presume.

I think Smalling could also be rested. Interesting to see no Scholes or Giggs.

From this morning's pressy I presume.

Well we know Evra, Rafael, Van der Sar, Ferdinand, Valencia, Hargreaves and possibly Carrick, Giggs and Scholes are out.

Kuszczak, Lindegaard, W. Brown, G. Neville, Vidic, Smalling, Gill, J. Evans, O'Shea, Fabio, Fletcher, Anderson, Carrick, Gibson, Bébé, Obertan, Owen, Berbatov, Rooney, Hérnandez, King, Norwood, Morrison.

I'm surprised to see so many thinking we will play Owen and Chicharito together, I'd be shocked if Fergie did as they are way too similar to work as a pairing.

Owen has been playing deeper for us these days so possibility in trying to give both of them a start which is going to be tough to get in the league or CL.

They are PL defenders playing for United, Evans obviously more experienced than Smalling, and despite not having much match time as a duo, shouldn't have too many problems with Southampton.

I would not have said that if they had not performed dismally against West Ham.

I hope Rooney starts this one as i see it as a great opportunity for him to get himself on the score sheet which in turn could quite possibly be the boost of confidence i feel he needs atm. A Rooney, Hernandez partnership would give the Southampton defense a busy afternoon of it.

Southampton are basically as poor/good as West Ham.

I would prefer Brown or O'Shea in there even with Evans at fullback. I think Smalling doesn't respect Evans' leadership in the centre. If needs be throw O'Shea as a defensive midfield buffer.

Saying all this Vidic will probably play.

I'd be surprised if the defence isn't Brown, O'Shea, Evans and Fabio. But I'm continuously proven wrong, so.
