They said the same bollocks about our trip to Saudi last year.

The fact is that we probably exerted as much energy in our two matches as we would have in a league game. We have seen two of our rivals drop 2 points each in our absence. And the damage in terms of jet-lag is made up by the fact that it has been a nice mid-winter break.

When has Anderson ever played left midfield for us?

Unless you mean a 4-3-3 formation, in which case it would be more likely to be either Scholes or Anderson with Carrick and Fletcher.

Anderson's playing well, I think Fergie will want him in the team. He showed after the Olympics that he can quickly recover from jetlag as well. But I think Scholes and Fletcher are also likely to play as they did not play much in the final.
Hey, it's a great squad. We could argue all day about the options!

Gary hasn't offered much in attack this season and against Stoke there's no reason to have 2 defensive full backs in O'Shea and Neville. With Evra out we could do with Rafael as an attacking outlet.

Also, why was Neville playing in Japan with G Neville on his shirt? Surely there's only one Neville for the club nowadays otherwise we would have won against Everton.

He always has G. Neville on his shirt. He never changed it after Phil left.

This is a must win game IMO... we need to start winning away and make ground up.... soon

In light of our rivals' dropped points, this is a massive match. I think, from what I am hearing from the lads, they have the bit between their teeth now.

Didn't he play there for us against Portsmouth this season?

Park will be useless against a team like Stoke.

Nani is useless against any team.

Park's a much better player than him.

Hard to believe that some United fans still can't realise that.

Way to ignore any good match Nani has had like the FA Cup game where along with Anderson they ripped Arsenal apart.

Slightly harsh on Nani, but he is a frustrating fecker. I actually believe that he has well and truly slipped down the pecking order after Japan. He was terrible against Gamba I felt.

Park seems to get the nod in most of the big matches now and I think that reflects the fact that he has shown good form in the past year. I prefer him against high intensity teams like Stoke because of his work rate.

It was a joke.

Nani's a good player.

To say Park would be useless against Stoke is just as stupid saying Nani is useless against any team, so I thought it was warranted.

He was. It's just the way he does everything. He passes lazily, he over elaborates everything and he just doesn't have the ability to do it the way he does. If he concentrates he can be a quality player though.

I just prefer Park against any team, he's consistent, his movement creates options and he is intelligent enough to involve himself in our quick interplay - be it with a pass or a run off the ball.

Nani when given a run of games last year was good.

Park's a much hard working player than him, certainly not a better footballer.

What a stupid statement.

You're right, and saying Park would be useless against Stoke is a completely justified and correct statement then, eh?

Park's a more intelligent player on the ball, his movement, passing and general understanding of our quick football is light years ahead of Nani.

He's not just more hard working.

Nani's made 14 tarts and been poor in most of them, Park has been much more impressive in even less games than Nani this season.

I don't think Park will be needed simply because Stoke are going to park the bus.

We'll need players who can make a difference on 1 vs 1 situations and good deliveries in the box as well as taking good corners. So I believe than Nani would be appropriate.

Park is arguably a definite starter against teams like Chelsea or Arsenal, where hard work is needed especially down the flanks but not against average teams like Stoke.

But the thing is Park is better in an attacking sense and a defensive sense.

He's just a better player.

People try to portray him as a hardworking player with little ability and he's there because he does a job defensively.

That's not how it is at all.

7 players out injured for Stoke apparently

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis is desperate for the transfer window to open after Thomas Sorensen became the seventh injury victim in his camp.Sorensen damaged his fingers while warming up before Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Blackburn to join Pulis' walking wounded ahead of the Boxing Day clash against Manchester United.

The Denmark international was replaced by Steve Simonsen at Ewood Park and joins a treatment room which also includes Dave Kitson, Mamady Sidibe, Andy Griffin (all knee), Salif Diao (calf), Leon Cort (groin) and Liam Lawrence (ankle).

Sorensen, awaiting results on an X-ray, could return against the Red Devils but few, if any, of the others are likely to return against the newly crowned world club champions and Pulis admitted: "We are suffering a bit at the moment, but other clubs have the same problems and you just have to get on with it.

"It would have been lovely to be able to bring in two or three players now to help us through a busy period, but the rules are the rules and we can't.

"Transfer windows help the bigger clubs with the biggest squads. They certainly don't help the smaller clubs."

Pulis has, however, been sending his scouts far and wide in the search for new recruits and he does expect a busy January.

He added: "We've had people watching players all over the world and we will be certainly trying to do some business.

"It will still be difficult for us because we are in our first season in the Premier League and people expect us to get relegated, but we will do our best.

"When we've been at full strength we've competed very well, but the injuries have affected us and we need to bring in more quality."

All but 3,000 fans in a sell-out 27,500 crowd will be roaring Stoke on and Sir Alex Ferguson is tipped to field some of his fringe players after United's exploits in Japan.

But Pulis knows his men will still be massive underdogs and must improve massively on Saturday's first-half collapse at Blackburn to stand any chance.

Stoke were also hammered 5-0 at Old Trafford last month and Pulis said: "Alex has got an enormous squad and whatever side he puts out will be packed with quality.

"First and foremost we know we will have to improve on how we played on Saturday because our defending was pretty shocking.

"Sonko's challenge to concede the penalty was like something you would see from a raw player in the second or third division.

"The other two goals we conceded were also very poor and we've got some work to do on the training ground.

"But the good thing about our players is they have great spirit and I'm confident we will have a good go on Thursday."

Stoke have slipped back to within two points of the relegation zone after failing to win any of their last four games, but Pulis remains pleased with his team's efforts so far.

He said: "We've got 20 points on the board before Christmas and Hull have got 27. I bet you could have got good odds against that happening at the start of the season.

"We've done well and surprised a lot of people and our aim will be to continue doing that over Christmas and into the new year."

Carrick is our most in form midfielder, and a 6 footer. He will play.

Other than that I agree with your team.

Stoke City legend Denis Smith previews the Manchester United match

PLAYING Manchester United at home is not just a massive football match, it’s also a celebration of winning promotion.

Your Arsenals, Chelseas and what nots are big, big games, but United takes the biscuit for me.

We’re playing the world champions, for goodness sake, and I urge every Stokie to enjoy the occasion from first to last.

I believe the atmosphere hasn’t been quite there for the last few home games, possibly because there was a greater expectation, but I’m sure the noise will be cranked up for this one.

It will be simply electric, particularly if we score first, and I know the home fans will be giving their players every chance of pulling off an upset.

Losing 5-0 at Old Trafford last month was a painful reminder of the gulf between the two teams, but that doesn’t mean Stoke can’t win this time.

This is a different day, different occasion, different pitch and totally different atmosphere.

There are household names everywhere you look in whatever team Sir Alex fields, but the one player I’d love to see out there is Paul Scholes.

He really is a joy to behold when you watch him live.

His tackling apart, perhaps, he is a brilliant all-round player, certainly better than David Beckham in my book, and I’d go as far as to say the best England midfielder we’ve seen for a generation or two.

Is there a weakness in the United ranks to be exploited?

Well, you have to look long and hard, but there may just be a chink of light at right-back because Gary Neville hasn’t played much in the last year, while young Rafael is a talented teenager going forward, but perhaps a little less assured defensively.

It goes without saying that Stoke will have to bring their A game in all areas, particularly at the back, and they certainly can’t defend like they did so fatally at Blackburn the other day.

United’s movement and interchanging is frightening, it really is, and defenders are rarely marking the same player twice in successive attacks because you have Wayne Rooney dropping deep, Cristiano Ronaldo coming inside, Dimitar Berbatov drifting wide and so on.

It will be interesting to see how Tony Pulis lines up at the back because he won’t have liked seeing Ryan Shawcross involved in all three Blackburn goals after being put at right-back.

So does he stick with Ibrahima Sonko’s experience in central defence, or twist by shifting Shawcross inside to his more accustomed position?

The answer will probably be who can handle the ball on the deck the better.

Much will also depend on whether Andy Griffin is fit to play at right-back, of course, and it’s obviously worrying for everyone to see so many experienced players out at one time.

Griff has been having a great season and is a leader out there, certainly one you’d want in the trenches against Manchester United.

Stoke fans were noisier than United fans at Old Trafford, so it will certainly be no contest with a seven to one advantage at the Britannia.

Let’s just hope that wall of noise not only needles United, but inspires Stoke to a truly memorable day’s work.

Nani is useless against any team.

Park's a much better player than him.

Hard to believe that some United fans still can't realise that.

I'm sure Sir Alex has faith with whoever he goes for, so why can't we all do the same....be it Park or Nani.

Both are great players, the only thing about Nani is sometimes he's frustratingly inconsistent but on his day, he's fantastic (FA Cup against Arsenal last year). Park is also awesome, he can run all day long. He's great both at being defensive and going on the attack. Nani, when he puts his mind to it for the good of the team, can produce moments of magic and he has some shot on him. Folk say Park is better defensively, but I've seen Nani on quite a few occasions not being afraid to go back and get himself into a tackle. Whoever Sir Alex picks, I'm sure he knows what he's doing and I'm also pretty sure whoever plays then the other one will be on the bench and could potentially feature if things aren't going our way.

Fit and fresh for Friday

Any rival manager hoping for a United setback at Stoke on Boxing Day may be disappointed by Sir Alex Ferguson's pre-match press conference.

The Reds boss had no new casualties to report and insisted his players looked good in training this morning (Wednesday), less than 48 hours after arriving home from Japan.

"We've no injury worries," confirmed Sir Alex. "Everyone has come through the trip well.

"We just hope we've got enough time to prepare for Friday's game. They had yesterday off and looked quite fresh in training today."

United's players will be put through their paces on Christmas Day to ensure that they are fighting fit for the Potters, but Sir Alex insists that they are still able to join in the festivities with their families.

"We're in tomorrow, training, then we go down at night to Stoke," he revealed. "We’re training in the morning, and we’re back in plenty of time to enjoy the family gatherings.

"Of course, the Portuguese and some of the European players celebrate it the previous night, it’s a different culture. So you’re not hindered."
