The 20 mins after RVP went off...

Leverkusen for me, but only one of Rooney/van Persie played that one too...

It does help when the opponent is 2-0 down and quite incapable of finishing the chances they create.

Knew this would happen.

I don't recall us playing lovely football and battering side during the couple months RVP missed through injury.

The only explanation is that Moyes has lost the dressing room in those last 20 mins. The players are clearly now disobeying his orders entirely and were just doing their own thing.

Mata adds a different dimension to that. Now you've got three people who are basically forced to start, as well as potentially having a player who's better at 10 than Rooney.

Rooney and rvp can't play together. It's one or the other, if we want to see better football.

Has more to do with kagawa coming on IMO. We need to give Kagawa-Rooney-Mata a try behind RvP. Our fullbacks are very good going forward and can provide width.

I think it was more to do with the confidence we gained from getting the 2 goal cushion than the change in personnel

We should drop RVP for the Olympiakos game and potentially the Liverpool game.

Welbeck and Kagawa are more deserving of game time at the moment.

Just don't play those two together for feck's sake, we've seen good RVP - Mata pairing, Kagawa - Rooney pairing, Kagawa - Welbeck pairing, Rooney - Welbeck but we rarely see good RVP - Rooney pairing, it just doesn't work.

Rooney looked like a pub player in the first half, RVP was just as bad but atleast he got an assist then.

He was the best payer on the pich first half. He lost his head second half.

Like I said in the other threads, we have to pick between him and Rooney. With the signing of this new contract I feel we have made our choice.

I said it in the match day thread. RVP has been awful lately. Hes been getting some goals but his mvement and attitude is terrible and he holds up our attacking play. Rooney plays better when RVP isnt on the pitch - Rooney is a more important United player for the long term, so RVP should be dropped.

If Moyes has the cajones to drop RVP against liverpool and field the last 30min side from today from the start I might change my stance on his managership.

The one thing the Rooney/Mata/Januzaj/Van Persie combo lacks is pace. Welbeck proves that in spades, just a thought.

We were 1-0 up when RvP went off. Rooney+ RvP just doesn't work and the Rooney-Welbeck as well as the Rooney Mata interchanges were really good. I'd love to see us play a game with Rooney and Adnan, Mata and Kagawa behind. Or put in Welbeck for Kagawa. There's just so much more pace in that attack!

Indeed. I knew a thread like this would be created though. Nothing quite as fun as drawing conclusions from 25 minutes of football. Our game changed with the second goal, not the change. Rather than showing Van Persie it just shows that are biggest problem has been playing with fear all season. The difference in the speed of everyone's passing was huge once we had some comfort in the game.

Was an off day for RVP, last 20 minutes of a game we were already leading is hardly the perfect way to draw conclusions.

Don't forget RVP had a big hand in the opening (and most important) goal with a beautiful well measured cross.

I'm not sure I'd select Rooney over RVP, but I definitely think the team's best served by having 3 floating attackers behind a lone striker and playing them both is a high risk strategy against a non-shit midfield

Rooney and RvP have never been able to form a decent partnership. Even last year when RvP was brilliant and we weren't playing badly, that was Rooney being dropped into midfield. This year, when we've tried to play them both up front, it's not worked. I wasn't surprised to see us suddenly playing better when we had a more balanced striking partnership up front.

A microcosm of the Rooney / RvP partnership was when we were taking that freekick and they ran into each other because they both want to occupy the same space. Ideally, I'd have shipped Rooney out in the summer and kept RvP, but I don't think that's going to happen now - I think it'll be RvP who leaves. Still, I think we play a lot better when it's just one of them plus a more balanced striking partner.

Nah, they're not. He's still delivering. Just that him and Rooney are not a good partnership.

Kagawa barely touched the ball.

No no no

Let Rooney or RVP start up front. Kagaea, Mata, Janizaj, Welbeck, Nani when he returns... All can play behind.

They managed it last season, so it seems strange how now all of a sudden they can't play together?

So 20 minutes of football against one of the worst sides in the country and suddenly it's Rooney>>>>>>>>>>>>V.Persie and the later should settle for a place on the bench? awesome.

Bullshit. I know you are constantly on a WUM though, so no surprises there.

On a WUM? He was awful! His first pass was floating the ball pointlessly to their keeper, the next was him getting shoulderbarged off the ball. The third goal.. good movement quick one touch passing... it was Fellaini involved heavily not Shinji.

RVP keeps the ball too long at his feet, he's brilliant on the ball but when he does the chances of seeing these passing sequences go down the flush.

Knew this would happen.

We havent played lovely football at all with the shitty wide approach, regardless of personell.

I think its worth a shot to play without both Rooney and RVP, and with ROoney being a more importnat player for us in the future Id rather see how it works out without RVP than without Rooney.

RvP just seems to slow us down. With Rooney and Welbeck there was a lot of quick passing even in the final third. With RvP that doesn't seem to happen.

I said earlier in the season, I'd be happy to see RVP go in the summer

Im not a fan of smiley responses but seriously... :wenger:

He was, held up the ball very well and created the goal. He passed through the lines and Mata messed it up I recall. The only mistake he made was trying to play through Mata rather than Rooney once. He used the ball well everytime he got it.

Mata touch isn't as smooth as a Silva or Iniesta and he lost the ball a few times they wouldn't have. Rooney was anonymous and Januzaj took ages on the ball. Felliani, Rafael and Smalling did well too.

Nah, they're not. He's still delivering. Just that him and Rooney are not a good partnership.

His job is to form a good partnership with Rooney (it's also Rooney's job too of course).

If they are incapable of doing so then one has to be dropped.

Welbeck and Kagawa have shown that they can link up well with Rooney, and the 3 of them bring out the best from one another.

I couldn't really say the same for RVP and any of our players.
