Television The Caf' Anime Thread

Should Fate/Zero be the first of the Fate series to watch?

I don't know why VN readers insist on saying watch FSN before FZ. I haven't read any of the VN's and think that the series would have been really awkward watched the other way round. The anime story of FSN is told in a way that assumes you have watched FZ first, I think VN readers just aren't able to put themselves in the shoes of someone who hasn't read the VN.

This.
If you are watching the animes, then do fate/zero first, or else the ending will just seem insanely stupid.

Haven't seen Fate/Zero or the Fate/Stay Night reboot, but plot consistency and character development aside, Fate/Stay night (the one from 2006) was quite good. Although it's supposed to be a particularly unpopular opinion, the old version seems universally loathed now. :)

Not only that but so many things. FZ introduces the whole concept of the Holy Grail war and explains what it's all about, FSN has several characters from FZ that you just wouldn't give a crap about had you not already had emotional investment in them, and lastly all the events from FZ referred to in FSN would just be confusing/meaningless.

I can see how it could work if the story was told differently, but in this case despite how the VN's are, as far as the mode of story telling in the anime is concerned FSN is a sequal to FZ.

Craving good action anime. Preferably darker for more mature audiences but not short on fantasy. Any suggestions?

Darker than Black is excellent. Actually all are pretty good suggestions.
Aye. I can tick off about half the list as watched and all of those were great. Along with your nod, I'm positive the trend will continue. :D

Just powered my way through Zankyou no Terror. Enjoyed it enough to be enticed from start to finish, although there wasn't really much of it. Kept me engaged by going straight into the action, allowing information to surface slowly as the show went along, and it raised some interesting questions about morality. Satisfying ending too.

Not enough development of the characters, the main antagonist was maybe too cliché for me, and the supporting member of the main protagonists felt contrived. Mostly issues that would be ironed out with more time available.

7.5/10

I just finished Full Metal Alchemist and Hunter x Hunter. I feel like I've got a void in my chest.

Hunter x Hunter, is probably the best anime, even TV series, I've ever watched. It is incredible.

I just started Sword Art Online, kind of boring so far.

Hunter x Hunter is ridiculously good.

Can't see him joining. I reckon he'd gather a crew and start sailing on his own, not dreaming of joining Doflamingo.

I was referring to Jimbei as Luffy already asked him to join. I reckon once his cover story is over and he finishes whatever business he has with Big Mom, we will see him joining the Straw Hats.
@syrian_scholes
Luffy as the captain isn't included in the 10 members. Currently there are only 8 crew members. Jinbei will meet up with the soon after he handles his business, he pretty much said yes to joining. I think the other will be Bartolomeu -- I would hope for him to join anyway. They need some powerhouses in the crew.

Yes, it's a very very long arc and still going on, 2 more chapters I think until it's fully finished.
I really hate and it actually makes me angry how toei stretches it out. If OP ever gets the DBZ Kai treatment, will toei animation still do it? I remember reading that they deliberately won't put the anime in hiatus, to allow the manga to catch up, due to it being a cash cow.

I don't watch the anime anymore as it's done very poorly, the manga though is great.

Have you watched Gintama? I'm just looking for recommendations now that I've finished Brotherhood.
I started it, didn't know what the hype is all about, so tried reading reviews and all seems to say after the first 51 episode it's start being good but I didn't bother watching it, watch Mirai Nikki or Elfen Lied, both are really really good.

Has anyone else watched Tokyo Ghoul? Finished it last week and thought it was a really beautiful anime. Such a great soundtrack and artistically brilliant. The odd slightly boring episode at times but overall very interesting and very violent / gory in places for those who are into that kind of stuff.

Thought the first season was pretty good, but gave up midway through the second one because I felt like the overall standard was dropping significantly. Does it get better later on?

I'd say it does, but the majority of season two is a bit samey. The ending is just gorgeous though, so I'd recommend trying to get through the whole thing if you have the spare time. Thankfully it's only short, so will probably only take up about another three hours of your time.

Just watched it. Normally I don't like dark, disturbing, and grotesque shows/animes, but Tokyo Ghoul feels...different.

I actually enjoyed the first two episodes, I think I'm hooked now.

Just finished watching Steins;Gate, and would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

The first 10 or so episodes are pretty slow with seemingly little happening, but once it gets going, it's up there with the best. Looking back, the plot is set up in such a way that a slow start is needed, since the rest of the season kind of bounces off the things that happen at the start. It also has some of the best character development I've seen.

Just finished Death Note.

I had high expectations
The ending was extremely dissatisfying. I think the last section and ending were the biggest example of this lazy/convenient writing, with a pacing style that was all over the place and ludicrous story conveniences or complete removal from logical outcomes.

It's not as if I wanted Light to win or anything, it's just the way he lost was kind of absurd. His approach to things is extremely methodical, you'd even expect Mikami not to make such a stupid mistake. It's as if Light's hubris led to his own downfall. Classic fail of the tragic hero, something straight out of Shakespeare.

Also one thing was that I just couldn't relate to any character towards the end. While the show had me hooked, I hated every character in Death Note. L and Light were no different -- both were arrogant. Near was even worse. I think Ryuk was the only character I found enjoyable -- but his screen time waned considerably in the final few episodes. It was Ryuk's game after all -- he started all this. But the focus almost disappeared from him and the fascinating interactions between him and Light were non-existent at the end. He was one of the best parts of Death Note and they gave him nothing of substance after episode 15 or so. I feel like the writers were too lazy or wanted to go in a different direction, to delve into anything of substance and this great character paid the price. Such a shame

I really like L, and don't find him overly arrogant at all.
I also think Lights father is quite likable.

I can't lie. L was the best character to be the anti-thesis of Light.

They killed him off pathetically though -- only to replace him immediately with the same character type who was far less interesting and even more unlikeable

I think Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was a much better experience for me than Death Note.

FMA Brotherhood gets 10/10
Death Note 8/10

Gonna go watch Steins Gate, will report back soon.

Steins Gate is awesome, but you need to be focused.
