Television The Caf' Anime Thread

I love Code Geass.

I would suggest Shiki (or Copse Demon) (even if it's obvious what it is about, we see more or less the two sides), Mahou Shoujo Madoka (it's a magical girl anime deconstructed, and it isn't aimed at all to little girls, though the two eps are quite boring, only at ep 3, the atmosphere of the anime becomes clear.), Sidonia no Kishi (SF one) or Mawaru Penguindrum (it's kind of a puzzle or mystery tring to guess where the story means or is going).

The anime of Hunter X Hunter is quite praised too... I have never watched it though because I read and reread the manga. Easily for me the best shonen manga in this category.

Finished Death Note now, I need something else to watch :(

I watched episode 1 of Code Geass but I don't think it's for me, will try a few more and see how it goes. But yea anyone got some recommendations?

Literally did the same thing as soon as I finished Death Note. Don't know why I couldn't get into Code Geass, everyone says it's great. Thought Death Note was the best anime I'd ever watch until I stumbled upon Hajime No Ippo.

Don't give up on Code Geass. It is better than Death Note in almost ever way. I too didn't like the opening couple of episodes. It's a bit meh at first but once you get into it, it's very engaging. Even the protagonist Lelouch is as conniving as Light and a better character overall IMO.

I guess it's just because it's a different style to Death Note, more vibrant and different sort of animation, and seems to lack the dark feeling too. I'll stick with it for a few more episodes though.

Yup, maybe that's why.

Death Note has a very realistic, gothic feel about it whereas Code Geass is more mecha oriented, mainstream and upbeat which puts some people off at first.

Hey guys, Scuzz TV are now showing some anime films on their UK channel. I made the promo for it. Have a look if you have a spare 30 seconds and let me know what you think!

Is it? I've watched both and I have to disagree with you. I enjoyed both but the style and music of deathnote probably edged it ahead for me.

Well it is subjective TBF. But personally for me, Death Note went to poo after :

L's death in Silence.

Also, it lost a lot of its appeal when I watched it the second time around.

While Death Note is very highly rated because of its sense of realism and Code Geass is a bit gimmicky and flamboyant - the latter is more expansive in its scope, with a better cast, bigger stakes, the fact that I love mecha and also, it's more emotionally engaging than Death Note :

eg. Sherley's death, Euphie's death, Nunally's death, Rolo's death, even Zero which was really well portrayed.

There aren't a lot of likeable characters left after L's death after which emotional vacancy and apathy starts descending. Kira is a douchebag whereas Lelouch is quite likeable even at the end despite being the primary antagonist of sorts.

The only place where I'd give a clear advantage to Death Note would be the presence of :

A mesmerizing co-lead in L, Suzaku pales in comparison to him.

Only five episodes into Code Geass and it's not gripped me like Death Note did (which had me from the very first episode), but it's better than I first thought.

I saw the first 4/5 episodes but couldn't really get into it. Is it worth a rewatch?

I definitely agree about the L dynamic. Suzaku was definitely one of the worst characters. One of my minor gripes with Code Guess is some of the minor characters were very stereotypical anime characters. Death note felt more 'real'. Also I never really got into mecha so that might explain my preference.

It's a great anime. Anybody here watch Naruto/One piece?

Steins;Gate is my favourite anime- admittedly it does start off pretty slow paced but it becomes intense half way through

I'm finding Code Geass on the same level as Full Metal Alchemist- good but not that great.
I have to say I'm struggling to have any attachment to any of the main characters

People's thoughts on Death Note are spot on

Have you guys seen Monster? Amazing storytelling, really grips you and makes you invest emotionally in the plot and characters. Highly recommended

Gotta admit, Caf is one of the very few places where Death Note is considered superior to Code Geass. Most of the people I've spoken to, even major publications and anime forums have Code Geass, especially R2 as a unanimous Top 5 or atleast Top 10 anime alongside usual suspects like Brotherhood, Haruhu Suzumiya or Mushishi, with Death Note nowhere even close. Very surprising.

Yeah it's brilliant. :D

Johan Liebert is one of the truly well fleshed out fictional antagonists.

Haruhi Suzumiya was interesting enough but for it to be considered an all time great is just weird.

I'm on the last few episodes of Code Geass now and its not even been as enjoyable as Attack on Titan.
Like people are saying Death Note was amazing up to a certain point, and then the quality dropped off greatly.

Need to check out Monster, I need to watch something hopefully a bit grittier after Geass

Not that it is a really anime-focused place so the liking may diverge more. Or the ones talking more make their preferences seem the rule. I remember I didn't dare admit I was really impressed by Puella Madoka on my anime forum because few people were really vocal with its faults while it seems more popular everywhere else.

Code Geass has its faults, like the beginning of the season 2, some kind of coincidences that may seem too forceful or random (they were fine to me), or that few characters seem to act weirdly sometimes. But I loved the intense drama. It's the only anime I have watched twice and it still moved me the second time.

I have to admit I really enjoyed Madoka Magica, but I'd be more afraid of saying that to Normalos in case they think its basically Sailor Moon- rather than offending the butthurt nerds of the internet

Yeah, the drama is almost political and GOTesque in anime form - really captivating and I feel Zero's strategies although a bit overblown add a lot of well planned twists to the whole story.

As for Puella, that is probably the most misleading anime series ever.

Remember watching the first episode after a friend recommended it and it seemed really juvenile. Couldn't believe it was created by Gen Urobichi. Of course the whole perception turned on its head after
Mami-san's death and Kyubey's revelation.
Great watch. Infact most of his work is brilliant. Especially Phantom : Requim for a Phantom, Psycho Pass and Black Lagoon.

Samurai Champloo, Stein's Gate, Psycho Pass, FMA: Brotherhood, Death Note, Attack On Titan would be my favourites. My watching habits are decided by Netflix though, If it's on there, I'll probably watch it.

Space Dandy is a fun new one. Made by the same guy behind Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Don't think that anyone's mentioned Berserk. I've never been into anime or manga apart from when I was a kid and was stupidly obsessed with Pokémon and Digimon. Then I stumbled by Berserk watched an episode (the last one ironically) and it gripped me by the balls. Unfortunately they only made a season so I actually looked up the manga and read the entire thing, unfortunately the manga not finished either though and a new chapter is only released like a few times a year which is really frustrating..

On R2 episode 8 of Code Geass, it's definitely not as good as Death Note for me but it's still pretty good.

Also watching Attack on Titan again (only got to episode 8 last time, can't remember why I stopped). Up to episode 9 now:

Some new guys have been introduced and I'm sorry to say I've got bad first impressions about them. They seem a bit...silly. That girl with cheesy lines taking on Titans by herself and the 'super cool I don't give a feck' guy just don't seem to fit into the show well for me. I'm sure I'll change my opinion in time though

Wooow Eren what a beast

One Punch Man has been green-lit for an anime
MADHOUSE the studio

OPM manga @ Batoto
Follows the life of an average part-time hero who manages to win every battle with a single punch. This ability frustrates him as he no longer feels the thrill of fighting a tough opponent, which leads him to question his past desire of becoming strong.

Gave Code Geass another go. Gave up after two episodes the first time but followed through this time. And it was very good, but still a level or two below the likes of Death Note and Cowboy Bebop for me. Also thought there were too many faults, but the ending was perfection. Really liked Kallen's character.

I'm on the last three episodes now, will finish them in the next few hours. Great anime but I'd probably slot it just behind Death Note.

I generally prefer anime movies, favourites being anything from Studio Ghibli, Tekkon Kinkreet and Ghost in the Shell.

But I've watched a fair few series too; NGE, Death Note, GTO, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, TMofHS, Welcome to NHK, Samurai Champloo, Elfen Lied, Chobots and School Rumble are all brilliant, can't recommend them enough to an anime fan, especially Cowboy Bebop. I've watched about 5 or 6 episodes of Code Geass, but didn't really get into it. Started watching Attack on Titan on netflix, it's pretty crazy, though not quite holding my interest as much as I'd like. Used to watch Bleach when I was a bit younger, but it got a bit too much haha. I've heard Berserk and Monster are good too, might put them on my to watch list.

I have seen off the top of my head
  • Code Geass
  • Cowboy bebop
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Baka and test
  • FlCL
  • Naruto
  • DBZ
  • Pokemon
  • Full Metal Panaic
  • Lucky Star
  • K-Om
  • Sword Art Online
  • Log Horizion
  • Haruhi
